I ordered this last minute to use for a trip. when it arrived it looked good. but the actual product is a fake. or more like a toy. you can tell by the time you get it out of the packaging there is no weight to it at all. just cheap plain plastic and some shiny stuff on the inside. obviously it won't work since it doesn't eve have the right attachments. you can plug it in nothing will happen. its a waste of money. not that it cost a lot but still a complete waste.

I have little to add to the previous reviews for this device they've covered most everything accurately. However there's one bit of advice for owners and prospective owners that I'd like to share: the Car Chip isn't especially robust when it comes to electrical system anomalies. I'm basing this comment on a previous version, however from what I can see, the power input appears to be approximately the same on this one.

So specifically what am I talking about? Well, for example, if you happen to find yourself with a dead battery, you should unplug the CarChip before doing any kind of jump starting, battery replacement, battery charging, or any other electrical system repairs. It's VERY easy to blow the protective device in the CarChip which will almost certainly blow the fuse for the 12V supply to your OBDII port. The consequences of this will vary from vehicle to vehicle, ranging from nothing more than no data collection (and an inoperative OBDII port, naturally) to a No-Start condition. The latter occurred to me on a Chrysler product which, for reasons passing understanding, the engineers decided to share power to the OBDII port with the supply to the engine computer. Not realizing that it was the CarChip that was blowing the fuse sent me and the service folks in some expensive circles.

Bottom line: if you're having ANY kind of electrical issues in your vehicle, remove the CarChip immediately until they are resolved.

Otherwise, with that above caveat, this is a very useful gadget especially for those who love digging into things.

I bought this unit to diagnose an issue with one of my cars and to also serve as a training aid for my son who is a new driver. It works as described and proved to be very useful in troubleshooting my car. I would give the device 5 stars if the software were better but it needs work.

You review each trip as a separate graph. Also each graph only has one parameter on it such as speed. This limits the ability to use the software directly to analyze the data by comparing two measurements on the same time axis.

To do any real analysis, you have to export all of the data to excel which is not a simple process but instead involved cutting and pasting the numbers.

I had seen this product that a friend of mine had for a long time. I was excited to get one when I got a car that would meet the qualifications. I just bought this this last month. I have traveled over 1000 miles already with it and is works beautifully. It has a LOT of potential for car up-keeping, but it also already does more than I thought it could. I got this thing on a lark and frankly I am very impressed. It allows me to easily track business mileage, time on jobs, driving behavior and a lot more. It also lets me clear "check engine" lights and has user programmable alarms for engine issues, temperatures, excessive speed, excessive acceleration and excessive braking. These beeping reminders are helping me to drive less aggressively and to save gas. And I can change or turn off the alarms any time I choose. And the data logging capability is rather impressive!

First, the unit has been replaced with a newer version called the CarChip Pro (which is what I got). While the first unit I got was faulty, they shipped a replacement immediately an A+ for their customer service.

I got it for a series of uses. I am considering switching over to an electric vehicle for our commuting use (best alternative with high gas prices, oil wars, climate change, etc), so I first wanted to really dig down into our typical driving so that I can figure out the right choice for us.

It is a "plug and play" unit and the software is extremely easy to use. Literally, just plug it into the OBD-II port. Pull it out and plug it to your computer and press a button to download the data into the CarChip software. Then plug it back into the vehicle.

Saving the trip data to a CSV file is relatively easy for a single trip. But to do it for several isn't one has to keep repeating this for every trip. Bummer.

I created an Excel file with some formulas for deeper analysis. I found that on our city commute trips we use engine power for only 40-50% of our trip duration (the rest is either idling or coasting) we are excellent candidates for commuting using electric mode only (either an electric vehicle or electric mode only in a plugin hybrid)!! To put in another way, we are wasting gas for at least half of our trips.

My area is hilly with plenty of slopes some steep but most are mild. So I now tried "saving gas" driving techniques in our compact manual shift car (2002 VW Golf). Been doing that for about 4 weeks now since my last fill up. And no, I am not driving like a "little old lady" just preserving momentum well and using gas judiciously. I've logged my driving over the last month (Apr 2008) and got 37 MPG!! That is significantly over the 23-24 MPG I got before I changed my driving style a 50% gain. So I expect to recover my cost in just a couple of months.

So after a few months my need for the CarChip is almost nil, right? Well, not really. While one can continue to use it to monitor car usage, mileage, etc, it can also be used to get an insight into the computer error codes and take action before it becomes too bad.

The unit retains the last 20 seconds of speed data in case of an accident. So it can be used to advantage. However, I am not aware of the validity of the data from a legal perspective, a good lawyer should be able to use it to "win the case".

The unit also captures hard/extreme braking and acceleration. While hard/extreme braking is required in certain circumstances, it should be minimal/none for a good driver. Both are not good for gas mileage as well. This information can be used to improve driving style. Since my older one will be of legal driving age in a couple of years, I plan to have this unit in his vehicle for the first few years to help him improve his driving habits.

While it is a no-brainer for fleets, it is good for the average family too.

Do NOT recommend. Charger would only charge half the time and broke after about 10 times using it. It's better to buy the real thing instead of this replacement.

I have been using this adapter for about three weeks and it is still fully functional. It fits with my splitter and charges my Garmin unit perfectly. The charger is clearly cheaply constructed, hence the sub-$5 price tag. I'm not sure how one can shell out a whopping $3 for a replacement like this, then come up shocked when it isn't perfect. Anyway, mine works fine, but in time I expect the actual outer "shell" of the charger to fall apart, it just seems poorly constructed. For what it's worth, the Garmin-brand charger that came with my GPS unit showed signs of wear fairly quickly as well.

This is not a bad product. It is very intuitive to use, in fact I didn't even have to look at the manual to set it up. If you live in a sunny state, then the possibility that you will have to use the car charge (cigarette) adapter to power up the headset is very low. Its main weakness is that the person on the other end of the line won't hear you very well, unless you scream your way through the conversation.

My office is my truck and my ability to conduct business on the phone is critical to my success. Also, much of my driving is on unpaved roads. I have never had to charge the devise outside of its solar charging feature. I have used this product for 3 months and have had no complaints from the other end of my phone calls. With bluetooth devices I tend to charge them once, then once the battery dies, never again. It just never makes it back inside the house. Recharging once a week or whatever seems obnoxious.

Enter the self-charging LG bluetooth. It's stupid easy to use (two buttons), syncs up quickly, and never, ever, ever needs to be charged (after the first time). I put it on the window of my car and it's stayed charged for several months of light to moderate usage. Fantastic!

Now for the bad news--the speaker is crap. I've given up using this on the freeway at speed. A solar-powered hands-free bluetooth speaker/mic for your car would be resistant to sun and heat. It is not. This unit worked very well for me from January through June. It never needed a charge despite many cloudy days mounted on the inside of the windshield as directed by the manufacturer. But one hot day in July, while I was at work, the unit overheated, swelled up, warped and ruined the power and answer/call buttons. It is fused into a single mass and literally bursting at its plastic seams.

This is a device DESIGNED to be installed in a hot, sunny windshield, and it was destroyed the first time the temperature exceeded 90 degrees outside. The temperature inside the car may have been 120 I don't know but still, extremely disappointing. And it's not like I live in Texas or Arizona. This was a sunny day in Oregon. Insert your own clouds-and-rain joke here.

I give two stars because the concept is excellent and the initial quality was decent. But buy this only if you want to install it in your car and then take it out every day and carry it around with your phone or misplace it. Lame.

The solar charge controller I was worried might be cheap, as soon as I got it (which took a while, everything else arrived Monday and this arrived thursday) I noticed the size was much smaller then how big I thought it would be, it fits inside your palm. I opened it to see what kind of circuitry is inside of it and I have definately seen cheaper made components so decided to give a go and tested the mA before and after the controller, it did seem to cut into the amount of power produced by the solar panel by at least 50 mA if not more, but the peace of mind that this controller gives is DEFINATELY worth the 12 bucks I spent.

I bought this for my 0 gauge ground for my amp but like i said in the other review it is a hair too big to fit into my amp. Im not 100 % sure if its my amp or if the post on these are just a tad too big but it doesnt fit into my amp. Im going to grind it down a hair to see if it works then but i dont like to fix things that should work. Its up to you if you want to try these and as far as im concerned the idea is there and would have worked great and could work great for you. Its easier then buying a distribution block and running 4 gauge wire off that to my amp but i might have to do that if i cant get this to work. Give it a try, it might work for you. these are built great, they clamp down hard. the build quality is excellent, there is no flash on the corners. I had to sand them down to fit my amps 4 gauge terminals. It wasnt too hard, but they are oversized. THey really help save wire and clean up the look of your install. I would never go without these again.

1/0 Guage wire in a 4 guage hole, ever tryed that? Doesn't work too well. But these wire reducers do. Simply strip the plastic off your power/ground wire and side in the hole, twisting with the strands to keep them all tight works best! The only think you have to be careful for is if you un-plug your amp to tape off one of the connectors to keep them from shorting out.

The FM transmitter works well, doing just what it is claimed to do. There are more than enough frequency choices for the DC metropolitan area and I would suspect everywhere else. There was some hiss noticed between songs that seemed due to incomplete FM quieting, but it was not noticed during all but the quietest music. It did just what I needed.

I bought this to charge my Zune in my car. I liked the small size and price, but it doesn't work. The fit in the cigarette lighter is extremely loose; the charger slips out whenever the USB cord is removed which sucks. I don't know why, but my Zune won't even charge off of it. It doesn't recognize that it's plugged in. The overall build of the thing is cheap (which is expected), so even if it worked it wouldn't last long. There are better options here on Amazon.

Don't bother with this, keep looking.

I like it...when you don't have a lot of room in your computer bag to carry chargers for your iphone and crackberry and bluetooth headset and gps and...you get the picture...this little thing will allow you to charge any of them with their usb cables...only down side I can see is it gets a little warm...may have been my iphone was really low on power.

I own two of these excellent chargers they are very simple to operate and very durable.

The chargers are weatherproof, and you can permanently mount them in the engine compartment with the provided ring terminals, or just use the alligator clips.

The charger has a battery status indicator (low / full), and settings for Motorcycle, Car, or Gel battery. The charger cycles from trickle current, to pulses, and shuts off when the battery is full. There is no better charger for winter storage battery tending, bringing nearly dead batteries back to life, or just recharging boat batteries slowly overnight.

Finally, I should mention that the current version of the 3300 has some improvements over the already excellent older version (I now have one of each). The latest version includes:

Heavier gauge wiring

Much heavier and more durable alligator clips

A nice zip-up storage case

This charger, as well as the current (more popular) Battery Tender chargers are both made in China. This charger seems to be superior to my Battery Tender chargers in that it appears to be well sealed, of a more modern design, spark proof. Enclosed in a two piece cast housing, not an aluminum box. The charging algorithms will bring back a sulphated battery in some cases. It has three different charging settings, and brought my sulphated APC UPS battery back to limited life. It is particularly well suited for small motorcycle size batteries as well as larger batteries. It may be left connected indefinitely.

My only complaint is the cheap power cord that gets as stiff as a broomstick in extreme cold. . . . . $%##@!! cheap plastic covered power cords, anyway!

I ordered 2 different chargers to maintain my gate opener's deep cycle battery (a simple 4 output charger with extension cords for charging other deep cycle batteries from amazon Battery Tender 022-0148-DL-WH 12V 4-Bank Battery Management System) and this unit has a far superior charging design.

The 4 bank battery tender does a simple fast rate charge then switches to a trickle charge at a constant voltage with 4 outputs.

This unit pulses the battery under charge and features 3 operating modes with different current outputs for different sized batteries. The selections are motorcycle which also works well for SLA gel cells or AGM batteries, standard automotive starting battery, deep cycle batttery, and off.

What makes the CTEK unit special is that it uses a pulse charge in all modes to attempt to desulphate batteries, while the battery tender does not. This method of charging has proven successful in restoring lead acid batteries that won't take a charge any more.

It comes with a waterproof 12V output cable and a set of clips or rings for permanent installation under the hood of your car. In addition to the LEDs for indicating the type of battery being charged, a second set is provided for empty, 1/2 full, and maintenance pulse charge mode.

There is also a noticable increase in quality between the battery tender and this unit small details like a water sealed housing and gaskets on the connectors indicate quality in manufacture.

For a single 12V lead chemistry battery this is a useful, well made tool.

This is the best charger ever. I have a lead plugged into my motorcycle, and 2 cars and I rotate it between the 3 of them and they start up like th battery is brand new. This will pay for itself just in not having to buy a new battery. Don't think you'll find something similar at wal mart for half the price. Don't go cheap as this is the best and well worth it.

This is a great charger. Our family van doesn't get driven much during certain times of the year so it sits in the garage. It's on its second battery and I am determined to keep this one fresh and topped off. The included dongle for for permanent installation makes this a snap, all I have to do is pop the hood and connect it up to the connector and I'm done. The charger automatically goes into maintenance mode where it keeps the battery nice and happy. I've also used this charger to revive an otherwise completely drained battery for a neighbor's car. He left an interior light on and discovered that the battery was completely flat two weeks later. I let him borrow this charger and it fully charged the battery over a weekend and the battery has not given my neighbor any more issues.

It costs more than some of the dumb battery chargers, but this one takes up less space, comes with valuable accessories, and provides enough current to properly charge larger capacity batteries. Two thumbs up!
