Wagan EL2558 Solar eCharger

I bought this solar charger last weekend. It did not take too much time to setup, however it did take quite long (about 4 hours) to get fully charged. Then, I used this charger to charge my cell phone without any difficulty. This made me feel good because it was the first time that I used green energy directly. Over all, it is well designed and easy to use. The case can be more slim and some switches can be combined, a little bit confusing though.

This item is designed very well. It appears to be very durable and well put together. Unfortunately the one I ordered was defective and would not take a charge from either solar or AC power. It appears that not all of them are like this, so its a bit of a gamble when you order. Fortunately Amazon allowed me to return the item without any trouble and even paid the postage.

Unfortunately all I had to work with is the one unit that I received so I have given it two stars. Sure it didn't work, but it was well designed and the price is great. If I receive a working unit I'll update my star rating appropriately.

Bought this item on June 24, but will be returning today.

As another reviewer had said, the design was great: it's about the same size and weight as a Nintendo DS Lite (looks similar to it too!), the 2 USB ports were great, and it came with both an AC adaptor for charging indoors and a DC adaptor for charging in the car. The inclusion of 5 nicely-made output adaptors (the description shows 4, but I also got a 5th one that worked with my daughter's iPod Touch) for charging different devices was very thoughtful. Another thoughtful touch was the built-in white LED flashlight. It was surprisingly bright, given it was just an LED peeking from a hole in the case.

I bought this to keep on my car dashboard to charge. Out of the box, the device didn't show any indication of charging from the solar panels (the Light1 LED was supposed to light up and indicate charge levels --red for low, orange/yellow for half, and green for full charge); Light1 was unlit. So I decided to charge it to 50% charge (the LED glowed golden yellow) with the included AC adaptor for about 2 hours. Exposed to indirect sunlight (about 1 foot away from a window), the Light1 indicator glowed gold still, so I thought maybe the battery needed to be "primed" to accept charging from the solar panels.

I used the EL2558 to power my USB fan (Connectland USB Desk Fan USB Powered with On/Off Switch Black Color) while I was working on the car (the unit was left open so the solar panels can continue to charge the battery). The first thing I noticed was that the battery got really hot while it was discharging. The unit ran the USB fan for about 1.5 hours (the Wagan's plastic case withstood the heat from the hot battery okay) until the Light1 indicator turned red and my USB fan slowed down to where it wasn't cooling anymore.

From then on, I kept the unit on the dashboard of my car, hoping that the red Light1 light would turn to at least orange. Here we are almost 3 weeks later, and the poor unit I got still has Light1 = red.

Before packing it, I thought I'd charge the battery again using the AC adaptor, and that part still worked, so as a USB battery, it works great, but I bought it for its solar-charging capability, plus I can get a USB battery for half the price.

UPDATE (07/20/2010): While shopping for a replacement for this product, I came across Sc-2800 Solar/usb Nimh Battery Charger (2800 Mah) which appears to be the same product, only better. With a price tag that's 50% of this product's, and a non-skid skin to boot (great for the dashboard!), I wish I could've seen it earlier. But alas, it looks like its performance matches the EL2558's (dismal!) so I think I'll just reuse my rechargable AA batteries with the 4 Battery Solar Charger and the (Portable AA Battery Powered Emergency Charger with Flashlight Black For Anything Powered Via USB to power my USB fan.

I have been using this for a week now, and it's pretty decent, especially for not being specifically designed for the Droid DNA. The suction cup sticks to my windshield as it should (have not tried the sticky mounting pad). The grip is spring-loaded and the inside of the grips are padded, but not as non-skid as I was hoping they would be, but the phone hasn't fallen out yet. Minor quibbles, but otherwise works well.

Quality construction, suction cup is super strong. Holds any device very snug. Five stars! I had an actual HTC brand mount for my old phone and this mount stays on the window better.

Took me a bit to find a holder that was fit for my Droid DNA and this holder met my needs. A friend tested it with her Microsoft Nokia Lumia and the holder was a perfect fit as well adjusts to varying phone widths. It was easy to rotate holder w /phone attached from portrait to landscape without the phone slipping from the holder. I have only used the "suction cup" for the windshield and with its size the larger Droid DNA did not result in the holder disengaging from the windshield. I highly recommend this holder.

The audio quality is poor. However, the solar panels are good enough thus I have never charged it.

This is a slick little box. The guy who claims it's not loud enough needs to have his hearing checked. It's plenty loud and the microphone works great. It was easy to bond to my phone (read the instructions and it's a five minute affair), trivial to use and hasn't needed a tethered charge since I put it in my car. The only weakness, I suppose, is the packaging it comes in (or rather doesn't come in since it was just a zip lock baggy) and the "I think I'm going to break something" feel you get when plugging it into the 12v charge cord it comes with. The later turned out to be no big deal since after an initial charge, I affixed it to my windshield and haven't charged it since.

Size-wise it's about 90% of the size of an iPhone. It slides in and out of a little clear plastic "sleeve" (that is, in turn, suction mounted to the windshield). It slides into the sleeve two ways but is really only designed to be put in the sleeve ONE way (the "call" button becomes encumbered if you put it in backwards ... fix: just don't do that).

Features include: volume up/down (which I haven't changed since setting the first time), call button (answer/hang-up/redial last), power on/off and a (hard line) charge port (which is, unfortunately, not mini or micro usb).

It automatically turns itself off when my phone "leaves the area" for some period of time (longer than leaving the car to go to the store but shorter than overnight in the garage). So when I get in the car for the first time I just press/hold the little red power button until it starts (and beeps with confirmation). After that, you just press the call button to answer/end the (previously bonded, of course) phone. Simple. Effective. Just right.

I found this product to be a great deal for the money and had no problems syncing my phones or using it. Additionally, I had no problems with the volume and found the speaker to be loud enough. The only bad thing is it does not come in the original box, but rather a zip-lock bag so I the idea of buying it as a gift, was out the window!

I bought one of these and it worked great with satisfactory sound and speech, the big draw to me was never having to charge. It worked for about six months then after 4 hot days of 90 degree weather the unit failed. I send it back under warranty and got another one that lasted about the same amount of time and suffered the same fate. To lazy to do another replace, trying something different....

I was disappointed with the mat, i thought it would be longer. The piece only covers the hump in your truck and you need to buy the sides from Husky Liner for it to cover the whole carpet area. I think the mats are way overpriced. I kept the same mats that came with my truck and the hump mat does have gaps on both sides but at least it does cover more of the carpet area than if i had purchased a cheaper hump mat.

I was thinking this was a over the hump floor mat that included the actual driver and passenger mats too. From the picture and description that is what I thought. Really disappointed with the product I got for the price. Would not recommend this to anyone. Find better deals elsewhere.

I bought this product on E-Bay for $40. I already had another Valet brand keyless entry system installed in my Ford but wanted the remote start after seeing a friend with one installed. I like the idea of being able to start your car ahead of time to let it warm up (in the winter) and letting the heat clear up the windows or get the A/C going ahead of time (in the summer). I had the first system "professionally installed" at Circuit City before they all went out of business and was not too impressedthey neglected to do a lot of things such as put the blinking light on the dash and left me without the valet button and others. They also took forever to do the job. I decided to do the install myself as a challenge because I was tired of the "professionals" always saying to leave it to them because us common folk could not do it.

Install was pretty basic but will vary from car to car. Remember I already had a previous system in my car so it sped up installation somewhatnot a whole lot, but somewhat yes. As with any system like this, install is not for the novice or faint of heart. It took me several hours of hard labor in dark cramped places to get this right. If you have a bad back or neck do not attempt to do this kind of thing. I would also say preparation is key. Go online to sites like and get a wiring schematic for your car so you know what wires are what colors, etc. I also taped little tape notes to the wires to tell me where each one went and then cut short the wires that I did not need.

Also make sure you have the right equipment with you. You will need wire strippers, good quality electrical tape, a sharp knife, wire cutters and probably a few automotive relays which can also be bought on Amazon for way cheaper than all the stores I called locally. Kragens had one and they wanted for it. Radio Shack didn't even have the right type.

The options you can set on this thing are very impressive and there are several safety features. Unlike my last system, this unit comes with a nice antenna so the range is very good. I can start/ lock/ unlock from my house and even a couple of hundred feet away as long as I can see my car (clear line of sight). The only downside is that this system only comes with one remote although I'm sure you can buy more which you then have to program to the system.

Overall this product does what it advertises. This is the same company that makes several other well known quality brands of similar products so don't be scared off by the little known brand name Valet.

This is simply the best product made for a BASIC remote start application. There are products with more features but across the board this brands quality is second to none period. I have sold directed products for nearly 15 years and it is a very rare occasion that a unit is bad out of the box. 99% of the time failure of this product comes down to INSTALLER ERROR not a bad unit. Every year more and more cars can not have a remote start installed in them. Thank the Car manufacturer for that. This product is intended for PROFESSIONAL install I strongly recommend that or you will end up frustrated and giving a great product a bad review.

I still have a tape player in my car, so I was very happy to get this product, in order to listen to my ipod. Unfortunately, the cassette adapter never worked! The cassette kept getting spit out. We tried over and over, hitting the prog button, turning it on in different order, hitting the rewind button, etc... It never worked, and I was very disappointed.

The charger on the other hand did work, but my intention was to use the cassette adapter.

I've gotta say that this is an EXCELLENT product for the price. I've been a musician for 25 years and I know quality sound, and the sound quality of this product is first rate. For those of you getting poor quality sound try CLEANING your tape deck head unit. I know good sound and the clarity is just a tad bit below my CD player. Both units of which are connected in tandem with the same head unit in my F250 Super Duty. I've got 2 kicker 12" subs, a hyphonics 1000 W amp and alpine tweets and like I said the sound is excellent for the price. For those of you that rate this product as poor, you should seriously look at your audio system and maybe spend a few bucks and get a head cleaner, or a new system all together.

Although the eTrexes were really designed for use in the outdoors, I use it in the car to help predict distance to go, etc., and if I have the local map downloaded to it, it has helped me out of binds on a couple of occasions. If you use it in the car, you really want this adaptor to save your batteries.

Not only will it save the batteries, but I can operate my Legend in normal mode to get better position from the WAAS data. (Battery saver mode precludes the use of WAAS and normal mode can really drain the batteries rather quickly.) (BTW, there is no scientific reason for reception to be better because of using this adapter.)

The cord is generously long. In fact, it can get in the way sometimes, but may allow the unit to be passed to the back seat so your back seat navigator can monitor it.

I have only two minor complaints. The first is the price. The Garmin Legend gives a lot of feature for the price, but Garmin seems to make up for it with the price of the accessories. It seems this adaptor should cost half what it does.

The second is that the fuse is accessed by screwing off the center of the cigarette plug, and the center piece has unscrewed itself on a couple of occasions now, leaving several small parts strewn about. I had to dig in my glove compartment this weekend for all of the little parts, and am waiting for the day I lose one for good. So be careful that the center is always screwed in.

I use this with the suction cup mount, which works quite well on glass. (But again, seems kind of expensive for what it is.)

This product is a must if you use your GPS in your car. It will save you many, many batteries. I like the quality. It feels solid. The LED on the lighter plug is useful. It indicates that you have power. The piece that snaps into the eTrex seems to connect well. It's never come unplugged after rolling around in my truck. The cord is plenty long for my needs--about four feet. My only complaint is the cost. The price was a little more than I would liked to have spent, but it's the only game in town.

All I require of this cable is that it plug easily into both my car and my Garmin Venture and then power my Venture. It does that swimmingly, just as it should.

The only aggravation has nothing to do with the cable: when you remove the cable, the Garmin will power down unless you hit a button telling it not to. I would often have the GPS hooked up in the car, get to the parking spot, then remove the cable in order to go and and get to the geocache. At which point the GPS would turn off (because I'd forget about the power down), and I'd have to wait around for the satellites to be found again.

I'm sure this thing works fine on some GPS units... but it's less than clear that this adaper WILL NOT WORK on the Legend or Vista. The title is misleading (it says "most" eTrex), the Product Description is just wrong (it says "all" eTrex). FOR The eTrex LEGEND or VISTA, you need a different adapter!!

Would have given it 5 stars except the clamp for attaching to the existing battery cable was a little too big. It wouldn't hold my cable very good. You'd think this would be some standard size across the industry but maybe not. I had to put the clamp in a vice and shrink it a bit to make it hold tight. Also, I had to work with the thing a bit to get everything to fit but nothing unusual for working on after market car parts. Good price too.

I purchased this product for my fleet of vehicles. I work over seas and am not home nine to ten months out of the year. I wanted to stop any discharging and just have my battery solar maintainer do the charging on each vehicle. Product works great but the terminal size is very small. I have Mercedes, Volkswagen , GM, Jeep and I had to stretch the terminal opening to fit over the battery post. Make sure you measure the battery post OD outside dimension. Other than that product works great.

First amp and very pleased. Still learning bout SVC vs DVC (single/dual voice coil), wiring for diff ohms, etc... If you switch the amp to Full, the remote line does not affect the bass output (kinda sucks), so you have to play w the Min/Max adj on amp. I bought this amp and two Infinity Reference 1262w 12-Inch 1200-watt High-Performance Subwoofer (Dual Voice Coil) -from DiscountsJungle, and the subs sound really good. I've only got one Sub hooked up now, and it pounds the mess out of my Mazda 3 so much I may not even hook the other one up. But I'll test it out for sure :)

For the price, you cant beat what I bought as a combo. If you are new to amps/woofers, do a lot of research on calculations of airspace for your "specific" subwoofer you buy, SVC vs DVC, diff ohms and wiring diagrams. YouTube has some good stuff.

Overall very pleased with this amp ( and speakers ).
