VIAIR 300P Portable Compressor

Ideally I wanted an on board air compressor in my new FJ Cruiser for going off road. But I needed an air compressor now, so I opted for the portable kit thinking I would install it at a latter time. Now that I have it in hand and have used it, I am most likely going to keep it as a kit. It works perfectly on the FJ's 32" tires and on my wifes Honda Civic it fills them within seconds. When putting air in bikes, it puts out so much air you have to watch out not to blow the tires. I showed a friend of mine how well it worked and he ordered one for himself that same day.

Without any knowledge of other air compressors, I would have given this product two stars, maybe three at most. Compared to competitors that I have experienced, this is a four-star product. Deductions are based on the cons below:

* The yellow air hose is too "stiff" (or the air compressor itself is too light) and too short. If you try to pull on the hose, as you would have to do to move from the front tire to the rear tire, the air compressor would move with it and often topple. Well, if the air compressor moves forward, it usually pulls on the power cables, detaching the clamps from the battery terminals. If the air compressor topples, which it usually does, it twists the power cable, also detaching the clamps from the battery.

* The power cable is too short.

* The tire chuck's lever is a bit too hard to squeeze. Its tip is also too short, and I always have a hard time connecting it to the tire valve.

I have a van that has corroded aluminum wheels, and it is destined to always have a slow leak. The dashboard warning "low tire pressure" light goes off at some inconvenient time, when no service stations are close by, and yet the tire pressure can already be 5-6 pounds low. I hate to drive it a lot when the pressure is this low, so having this relatively inexpensive air compressor on the vehicle comes in handy over and over. I have also used it to service the tires of the trailer I pull with the van while on vacation, and I have been able to help any number of folks in parking lots with their flat tires.

This compressor does not have a reservoir, so the motor must be running to supply air. It cannot be used with air-powered tools. However, it is useful for inflating air mattresses, beach balls, other things like footballs, bicycle tires, etc.

It comes with a zippered canvas bag, with the compressor in one pouch and the coiled air hose in another pouch. It has a fairly long power cord with alligator clips to attach to the vehicle's 12V battery. The motor is powerful enough that plugging it into the aux power socket (aka cigarette lighter socket) is not possible. The cord is long enough that you can position the compressor mid-way on either side of most passenger vehicles. The rest of the distance to the tire(s) is taken up with the coiled air hose. The hose has a quick release fitting so that it can be quickly attached and detached from the compressor. The other end of the hose has a standard Schraeder valve fitting, which can be unscrewed to replace with the other fittings for balls and such, which come with the compressor. The hose also has a valve to release air from the tire, either continuously for deflation, or in small pulses in order to low the pressure by a couple of pounds.

The compressor supplies enough air that filling even a flat tire takes a very short time, perhaps a minute. Adding a few pounds to a low tire takes only a few seconds.

Build quality is decent. The compressor has some sort of muffler inside the carrying handle, so it is quiet. The is also mounted on a vibration damping metal plate.

Complaint: The compressor has a power switch located on the body of the unit, requiring you to run from the tire over to the compressor to stop the air once the tire is full. Some competing units have the switch on a separate cord that allows you to hold the switch in your hand while you monitor the tire.

After burning out two $20 compressors from Harbor Freight, I decided to research online and buy something that really is powerful and works more than one time. The Viair 30033 330P is certainly powerful enough for my little Civic wagon. I don't think it warrants the $170 price tag, but it does seem to be what it claims to be online. There's no way the cords are long enough for a bigger truck or RV. I advise installing a dedicated, hard wired compressor in a big vehicle. The carry case is a cheap nylon bag and the overall quality is high for China: low by my USA standards. You can get it delivered quickly though. Mine arrived next day.

Cons:

(1)Warranty service is not free, in fact, it is quite expensive. I think most of Genius Charger owners are not very happy about it when warranty service is needed. Hopefully, repair rate is very low.

(2)The price tag of G1100 is almost $45, a bit overpriced, but good battery maintenance and extended battery life compensate the cost.

I got my G1100 for less than a week. I got trouble when I used it to charge my battery the first time, all LEDs illuminated and were blinking once the AC power was plugged into an electrical outlet. Obviously, it was an error warning. I checked all connections and found nothing wrong. I suspected my G1100 is a bad charger. I looked into Troubleshooting in User Guide before calling NOCO Genius for help. Troubleshooting indicates that my 2 year old battery is in very bad condition as a result of sulfation or damage. COSTCO gave me a free replacement because my old battery is still within 3 years warranty. G1100 saved me $75. I installed the new battery, then charged it again. All 5 charging steps went through as smooth as expected and successfully. It took about 5 hours to complete a full charge (from 25% to 100% full charge). I will update my review when needed. So far, everything is going well with my G1100 charger.

I store my car 6 months out of the year all I can say this is a great product, easy to use and works.

This seems to be a very good charger. I am using this on my ford escape, mostly.

I drive the car to work about 2miles to work one way each day.

On this car, and the last car I had, the battery always runs down during the week, due to the lack of run time on the alternator to battery charge time for my short trips.

Since using this charger, (i connect the charger on fri when I get home from work and leave all weekend, because I don't drive it on the weekend), I have a strong start when I do use the car and start it up on Mon going back to work.

even though the mounting bracket is just Velcro, the distance the remote works at is incredible. I can control my iphone from outside my house. This would be completely adequate for ridding a bike and controlling an iphone.

the plastic attachment to to the bike is limiting. I had to attach the controller to my Kawasaki's key chain which worked very well to. Except at night ... because I couldn't see the controls that easily.

The buttons are big enough to find with your hand, however, when going 85mph ... you kinda don't wanna be fumbling around with things :P

Still, works great and, with those limitations in mind, I still will be using it!

Bought a Lanzar Vibe292 about a month ago. I am past satisfied with the massive sound this amp puts out. I've had a few amps in the past but this one ain't no joke. The only problem I had with this amp is that it overheats easily and can melt things internally very fast...But after getting it repaired and learning this it is a good amp to play around with from time to time but if you look at this amp for power and don't know about RMS yet you should do the research now and then shop later...I bought 3 amps before I found out about RMS value.

Black & Decker JUS500IB 500-Amp Jump Starter with Built-in Tire Inflator

So far this unit has performed well. I used it to jump-start a raggedy old farm tractor, and the little box seems to have an impressive amount of cranking power (for short bursts, anyway).

I've used the inflator twice to inflate a car and a truck tire. Takes awhile to get a tire up to pressure, but's that's normal with these little compressors. For it's size, it's quite adequate as an emergency air source. Took me about 8 minutes to bring the car tire up from 25 PSI to 45 PSI (under the weight of the vehicle). Really not that bad.

The truck tire took a bit longer, as I had to stop the unit to let it cool down. B&D recommends running the inflator for no more than 10 minutes continuously. Total time to bring this nearly-flat tire up to pressure: Just under a half-hour. Again, not too shabby considering how small this thing is.

I like the layout of the controls and indicators. Clear, easy to read, easy to access. Storage for the jumper cables is OK. I'd prefer to see them stowed in a sealed compartment, but they seem pretty secure. Keep the clamps clean, and there shouldn't be any issues storing this in a car.

Storage for the inflator hose is cheesy. It's stuffed into a tiny compartment, and you have to really bend the hose in order to get it inside. The maximum length of the air hose is about 2 feet. You must set the unit very close to the tire for the hose to reach the valve. Not a problem for me so far, but keep this in mind if you need a unit with a long reach. B&D could have done better here.

A major gripe I have is that the inflator has no provision for a backup power source. Depending on how long the internal battery will remain charged in storage, you might find it lacks the juice to power the unit in an emergency. Why couldn't B&D include a 12V cigarette adaptor for this situation? For a unit that's supposed to be a piece of emergency gear, this seems like a glaring oversight. You'd better hope that the internal battery is extremely reliable without it, the unit is useless. Could have been a five-star rating if not for that issue.

Overall, I'm pleased with this purchase. Reliability will be the ultimate test, and it's still too early to pass judgement. If it holds up season after season, and delivers the goods when really needed, I may change my rating to 5 stars. For under 100 bucks, I'd say give it a try.

UPDATE: 12 Jan 2010

The inflator died on me, with less than 4 hours total runtime. The motor was cranking away, but there was no air pressure at all. Brought it to a B&D service center, and paid $15 to have a new one shipped to my home. No hassle at all returning the unit, and the replacement is working as advertised so far. Maybe I just got a lemon, so I'm not going to downgrade the rating at this time. Will check back at a later date.

UPDATE: 23 Aug 2011

Working fine after 15 hours of compressor use. I was advised not to store the unit very long in sub-freezing temperatures. This apparently can damage the compressor, which may be the reason my first unit failed.

I received this last week, plugged it in to charge the battery, and planned to leave it in the garage. I wasn't planning on writing a review until I used it, until this morning when I needed jump-start my car because "someone" left the lights on overnight. Sure enough, I put this baby to work immediately and the engine started (no surprise there).

What I was surprised about was that I needed to connect both the positive and negative to their respective terminals. At first, I connected the negative clamp to the chasis (like how I would normally jump a car), but my car would not start. I tried several places along the non-painted metal frame part and even the engine block of the dead car to no avail. As a last resort, I connected it to the bolt of the negative post (while wearing eye protection), and the car started. I know this is a no-no, but nothing else worked, and I needed to go to work. I'll troubleshoot at a later time (or most likely never). UPDATE: I've since used this on various automobiles (including the problematic car described above), and connecting the negative clamp to the chasis works perfectly fine now. I'm not sure what happened since, but now it is working fine following the proper useage.

Now, I keep it in the trunk, just in case. It has a nice compact body, so it does not take up much space. I like the light on the unit, but it is also a bit awkward to use (it points UP, rather than down), so I had to hold the unit upside down to see what I was doing. I have yet to use the inflator, so I have nothing to contribute about it. I did try it, and it seems to work. The compartment for the hose is awkward (behind a small plastic door underneath), but at least the hose is stored and not dangling around.

It does not come with an extension cord, which is required for charging. Luckily, I had one available, but it would have been nice to have come with one (even a six-footer would be nice). (Minus half star)

Overall, a very nice portable jump starter. I have a project car that constantly needs a jump, and I found this jump starter readily handy. For those who do not anticipate to use it a lot, this unit may be a bit overkill, and there are other smaller and cheaper alternatives. Highly recommended. Will update in a few months.

I've owned this for almost a year now, and I can honestly tell you, buy the jump starter without the tire inflator.

The jump starter works great, the internal battery lasts a very long time, and this unit is very well made for the most part.

The weak link is the tire inflator. It overheats very quickly depending on the outside temp. In hot sunny weather it began smoking in a few minutes. Within a few months of regular usage (I have a bad rim on my car), the inflator completely died. It ran, it just has no air pressure.

I guess in an emergency the inflator would do it's job, but for regular usage, buy a better inflator.

The light works well, but points straight up.

The usb charger worked as it should.

I'd give 5 stars except for the inflator.

This product serves its purpose to perfection. I have used this to start my car 3 times. I also used it to start my mothers van which was dead for about 3 months. Each vehicle started up in less than a minute. Usually within 20 seconds. The only criticism is that apparently it seems to have a problem with the inflator because mines went out as well. These are certainly good enough. Finding the right size lug gauge to match the stud diameter was tricky but they work. A good set of hand crimpers/lineman's pliers will do the job on these well enough.

This connector is well built, but soft enough to fasten to the wire without regular crimpers if need be. You might want to check the connector after after it has been in service a little while, to make sure the softness doesn't allow for loosening, but they should be fine.

Is exactly what it says it is. Some 8 gauge ring terminals are very small and my wire wouldn't fit in, but theses are perfect. My stinger hpm 8 gauge wire fits snugly and no trimming of the wire is necessary with these. I am very happy with this product.

It's small and slim. So is the battery. Battery life is about 10min, so I always have to plug it in. The maps are from 2004, so many new roads and changes don't show. Cannot upgrade the maps. After you use it 2 or 3 times then it deadlocks and need a hard reset, so the included stylus is useful. If you see this gps, I would turn my head the other way and start walking.

Ok, so I read a few of the other reviews and was shocked. I love this little GPS, when I am not using it to get somewhere I can use it as an MP3 player, bluetooth in car for phone, and place to store photos. It has so many functions. The only problem I have run across is that my maps are dated 2007 and I need to update it, but you can search online and easily do this yourself.

I've had this terminal installed over a year now. It sits just tight enough on my battery post to start the car but loose enough to be easily pulled off by hand. (Battery is a Duralast Gold.) Never had a problem at all, but it's still a worry that it may have the possibility of falling off.

The ABS plastic adds quite a bit of bulk to the overall size. The plastic cover ended up rubbing against the hood and hood holder of my car. After a few months it ended up with a few slight blemishes. You'll also need to ground the LED to the chassis of your car. If you aren't able to tuck the ground connection away you'll end up with an ugly thin wire in plain sight.

Overall, I would say that it looks good.. But isn't all that practical. The plastic scratches easily. If you're running an amplifier or two, the voltage AT the battery isn't likely to be the same at the amp keep that in mind.

Not planning on purchasing again.

Although the eTrexes were really designed for use in the outdoors, I use it in the car to help predict distance to go, etc., and if I have the local map downloaded to it, it has helped me out of binds on a couple of occasions. If you use it in the car, you really want this adaptor to save your batteries.

Not only will it save the batteries, but I can operate my Legend in normal mode to get better position from the WAAS data. (Battery saver mode precludes the use of WAAS and normal mode can really drain the batteries rather quickly.) (BTW, there is no scientific reason for reception to be better because of using this adapter.)

The cord is generously long. In fact, it can get in the way sometimes, but may allow the unit to be passed to the back seat so your back seat navigator can monitor it.

I have only two minor complaints. The first is the price. The Garmin Legend gives a lot of feature for the price, but Garmin seems to make up for it with the price of the accessories. It seems this adaptor should cost half what it does.

The second is that the fuse is accessed by screwing off the center of the cigarette plug, and the center piece has unscrewed itself on a couple of occasions now, leaving several small parts strewn about. I had to dig in my glove compartment this weekend for all of the little parts, and am waiting for the day I lose one for good. So be careful that the center is always screwed in.

I use this with the suction cup mount, which works quite well on glass. (But again, seems kind of expensive for what it is.)

This product is a must if you use your GPS in your car. It will save you many, many batteries. I like the quality. It feels solid. The LED on the lighter plug is useful. It indicates that you have power. The piece that snaps into the eTrex seems to connect well. It's never come unplugged after rolling around in my truck. The cord is plenty long for my needs--about four feet. My only complaint is the cost. The price was a little more than I would liked to have spent, but it's the only game in town.

All I require of this cable is that it plug easily into both my car and my Garmin Venture and then power my Venture. It does that swimmingly, just as it should.

The only aggravation has nothing to do with the cable: when you remove the cable, the Garmin will power down unless you hit a button telling it not to. I would often have the GPS hooked up in the car, get to the parking spot, then remove the cable in order to go and and get to the geocache. At which point the GPS would turn off (because I'd forget about the power down), and I'd have to wait around for the satellites to be found again.

I'm sure this thing works fine on some GPS units... but it's less than clear that this adaper WILL NOT WORK on the Legend or Vista. The title is misleading (it says "most" eTrex), the Product Description is just wrong (it says "all" eTrex). FOR The eTrex LEGEND or VISTA, you need a different adapter!!

Sirius radio 5v cigarette lighter car power cord adapter 5v

There isn't enough information in the description. It just says fits "newer" Sirius models. Well, the SDST5V1 Starmate 5 is a newer Sirius model and this power cord does not fit the SDST5V1's power dock.

Item broke after about 3 months, the cord is made out of cheap plastic and it ripped right at the point where the cord meats the adapter for the cigarette lighter. FYI I thought that this thing might actually light up or something, because of the plastic see through top there, it doesn't. Just in case any of you were wondering about that.

Shipped fast. Worked, which is always good. Learned that plugging and unplugging from power port is probably the action that ruined my power cord in the first place. So, leave the power cord plugged in if you know that it won't drain your battery...probably wont on newer models.

I originally ordered my D3400 from Crutchfield. Installed it as a main battery and it performs brilliantly. Engine starts no problem, and it was powering a Crescendo 2K, and MB Quart Onx4.125 amp with no dimming on a stock alt. I eventually decided to go bigger with my install and called on Amazon for the order, since they offer very fast shipping. Installed 2 more D3400s in the rear, and they power 5K of amps just fine. Upgraded the alt to 250a, because I needed the power but these batteries are very good. The only thing is they are very heavy, but that's to be expected from a larger battery. Compare it to the Yellow Top Optimas and I would say the XS Power is a much better performer. Resting voltage is around 12.8 with mine so they hold a really good charge. Definitely buy these if you are planning a stereo and can fit it. I would install one as a starter battery, and the D3100 in the rear if you are installing a high demanding stereo set up.
