SIRIUS Stiletto 2 Portable Satellite Radio with MP3 Player

I thought about writing a review for some time now. I wanted to make sure I was out of the honeymoon phase before I wrote about this device. I have had it for over a couple of weeks now and feel like it's time.

I purchased the Stiletto 2 as a late Christmas present to myself. I had signed up originally for the 3-day trial and loved the radio selections. I live Montana and our radio stations are pretty decent, but we have a lot of commercials. So, being able to listen to music without commercials is fantastic.

I wasn't sure what device to purchase, so I started reading. I had read a number of reviews (particularly the poor ones) about the Stiletto 2, but I liked the portability aspect, so I purchased it.

I now understand their complaints. They want better reception from the device itself, better/more comfortable headphones, etc. I agree the reception on the device isn't the best when indoors, but I purchased the home kit and that significantly improved reception.

When I am away from my home dock, I connect through Internet radio and it works just fine.

I also bought the car kit, but haven't had a chance to install it yet. I was able to get reception in my car without it though, so I imagine the car kit will only improve upon that.

The user interface is quite easy to navigate and the controls on the device are fairly intuitive. I like to test devices without reading the manual first to see how easy it is to figure out and the Stiletto 2 was pretty straightforward. I had to refer to the manual to understand the recording options, but otherwise, it was simple.

The recording option is fantastic. I set up a number of recurring sessions in the middle night. In the morning, I can then listen to them when I am working out, running errands, etc. I think this is probably one of the best features of the device. I have 15+ hours of recorded content and have used only 35% of the internal memory. Replay is fantastic. You can skip through songs just like your MP3 player and for me, that's a great option.

The size of the device is just right. It fits in my pocket, but it's not so small that I am afraid it's going to get broken or lost.

The battery life has been more than adequate. It's rated at like 4+ hours for Satellite or Internet radio and 20+ for recorded or library selections. I can attest that I have listened to it for many hours without running out of power. I wouldn't mind having a spare battery, but it's probably overkill.

As for the additional SD card slot. It's too bad it's under the battery. When you install an SD card, it's like you are putting in RAM in your laptop. This is not simple or intuitive for a lot of people (thinking of my mom here). I am sure there was an architectural reason, but it's too bad it's not just inserted on the side like a number of cell phones.

I have owned a number of musical devices in my life, 5+ iPods, a Zune, Rio, CD players, Walkmans, etc, but I can say this device has really reminded me of how music can be such a wonderful part of your life. I listen to my radio non-stop, and I wouldn't have it any other way now.

As the subject states, I really wanted this to work.

For those who read through my review, I want to make it clear that I am a Sirius fan. I've had a Sirius satellite radio in my car for two years now and I cannot imagine driving around without it.

Last year I accepted a new job that puts me on the train every day instead of in the car for my morning commute. I've missed my satellite radio since then so for the last few months, I've had my eye on the Stiletto. I decided to wait for the Stiletto 2, and I finally took the plunge over the weekend.

Out of the box, the radio looks very attractive and fits perfectly in my hand. The large display is colorful, bright, and easy to read and navigate. The controls are very easy to operate. Overall, a very intuitive design.

The radio is feature packed. You can import your own music into the device via included software. In my opinion, there is plenty of space for stored content out of the box (about 100 hours worth) and I think that will acommodate most people. For those of us with large music and audio book libraries, the added micro-SD card slot is a nice touch. Another feature was wireless connectivity. Some claimed they had problems with frequent disconnects. I didn't have this problem.

Activation was pretty simple, however I couldn't grab a signal indoors, I needed to stand outside on the front porch to complete the activation and the initial download of the channels. I was hoping this wasn't going to be a typical problem, as I even had the antenna headset plugged in. By the way, I've heard rumblings about the Altec Lansing headphones being uncomfortable and I would have to agree. I think Sirius could have made a better choice in headphones, since they seem to be a requirement for this device to get any kind of a signal.

Now, on to reception. Let me make it perfectly clear that I live in the outer suburbs of Chicago. I live near a small city called Crystal Lake, and although is not very close to downtown Chicago, I wouldn't consider myself as living in the "boondocks" either. I also want to make it clear that I purchased this radio so I could listen to it on the train. Those of us who have long train commutes would appreciate having such ability to listen to their iPod or satellite radio. And since my commute is up to 1.5 hours each way (up to 3 hours round trip commute) one could see how I would become excited about bringing my Sirius programming with me on the train.

When I first put the headphones on and fired up the unit, I was standing in the depot after having just finished mixing my coffee. No signal. Okay, so I walked outside and with a cloudless sky, I was able to get two bars and I was able to listen to the radio. I walked across the tracks and went to one of the open-air shelters (it was a particularly cold day and there are warmers installed overhead in the shelter.) As soon as I entered the shelter, I lost signal. Huh, okay. I decided to test it. I walked out of the shelter and received signal again. I walked around and although uninterrupted, I walked under a tree and the signal was interrupted. I started to become discouraged.

So, the train arrived and I boarded, selected a window seat and settled in. I was very disappointed (heartbroken, would be a better term) that I could not get a signal for pretty much the entire train ride. I tried moving the headphone wire closer to the window, I tried leaning my head closer to the window, tried holding the unit closer to the window, but the screen continuously displayed "Acquiring Signal." It was only when we were a couple miles from downtown that I was able to get a signal, but I attribute this to retransmitters that I hear people talking about.

I realized the same results on the way home. I tried it again the next day, this time sitting on the upper row of seats but to no avail. Since this purchase was primarily for entertainment while on the long train commute, I have decided to return the radio. I suppose I'll look into XMs option or just get an iPod. I will keep a sharp eye out for future offerings from Sirius and XM. I haven't given up on my quest to bring satellite radio with me where ever I go.

I give this product two stars, for the added features and well designed menues and navigation. It's too bad that I couldn't use it for its intended purpose, hence the deduction of three stars.

This item is a homerun. I had the first Sirius Stiletto and that, while a nice item, was a little limited with it's WIFI connection and also it was a little large.

Sirius hit a homerun with this, the much improved SL2. To start off, the WIFI capability has been expanded to support 802.11b/g and also will work with most wireless hotspots. Plus, you can now enter a username and password to connect where you could NOT do this on the first Stiletto.

In addition to it's upgrade, it is also almost 30% smaller that the first Stiletto yet this item does not feel cheap. It is very solid, yet very small. It is slightly larger than a Motorola Razor phone. The feel of the device is also very nice with the all black look and the rubberized plastic covering on the back that will prvent scratches when set down.

Overall, the performance of the device has been 100% perfect with no lockups, freezes or issues. Plus, the exandable memory is GREAT. You can add up to an 8gb micro sd card making this a 10 gig MP3 player (2 GB internal memory).

Sirius has also updated the channel logos and wallpaper screens for each individual channel. Plus, the sports alerts are much improved and when listening to on NFL game, the screen displays a graphic of each team's helmet, ie. if the Raiders are playing the Cheifs there will be a Radier Helmet and a Chief helmet on the screen. This doesn't enhance your listening of course, but does make for a nice touch.

There are a few other added features but most importantly, they have included a bass boost with four settings (off, low, med, high) and also SRS Focus, also with four settings. The sound is much improved over it's predecessor when using as an mp3 player and, in my opinion, far better sounding than any IPOD.

The antenna headphones are probalby the BIGGEST improvement as the original ones were god awful. The improved headphones are extremely comfortable and are made by Altec Lansing. Portable reception has also improved with this device but if you do not live near a terrestrial signal repeater, you are probably going to be forced to either use the Antenna Headphones or try to connect over a wireless network because the built in antenna on the device is just not that strong and probably never will be---this is just a shortcoming of satelitte radio, not of the SL2 or Sirius.

Overall, I am loving life with this device as it is now my Satellite Radio for use in my home, car and in portable modes and also my primary MP3 player. I ditched my Ipod since I am now able to squeeze 10gb onto this player. Also, I can record any Sirius program on a daily basis and listen back when I have the time.

If you have been considering Sirius, or your are a current subscriber looking to upgrade to a better radio, your 100% best choice would be the Stiletto 2. A great device without a lot of cool features and capabilities.

having used numerous consumer and expert reviews in the purchasing of the Stiletto 2, i feel the need to present my experience and opinion on this new receiver. first off, as a long time Sirius customer, i love satellite radio! even if you don't go with this unit, i highly recommend Sirius or XM to anyone that travels a lot or just enjoys listening to radio stations that stick to the stuff they want!

now for the Stiletto 2....

my previous receiver was a basic radio with the car and home kit that lasted 4 years, so upgrading to the Stiletto 2 was a major price jump and leap of faith on my part. i read the reviews (good and bad), product descriptions, and expert analyses. my conclusion? the Stiletto 2 is a very cool toy with lots of features and a sleek attractive design. the sole detractor to it is the extreme reliance on the accessory kits (not included).

ANTENNA RECEPTION: this is the major complaint of most negative reviews. the truth is that the Stiletto 2 has the same reception capabilities as any other unit WHEN outside or connected to a external antenna (only included in home or car kits). it will not work well indoors or in areas with significant obstructions to the sky, just like any other receiver. and its built-in antenna does allow you to listen to it with headphones while walking around outdoors. the Stiletto 2 also has a built-in wi-fi connection, allowing you to listen Sirius over wireless internet networks.

LOOK AND FEEL: nice design, lightweight, easy access menus, color display...overall A+

MP3 PLAYER: cool bonus that allows you to switch between Sirius radio and mp3 modes. the product description claims 2GB worth of space. however, only 800 MB is available for downloaded music, as the rest is designated exclusively for recording live programming from the Sirius channels. if you want more room for your mp3's, you can plug in a microSD card (up to 8GB) with your music into the Stiletto 2 and increase the size of your playlist!

STAND-ALONE/ACCESSORIES: out of the box, the Stiletto 2 will only run using headphones or earbuds. if you want to play it in your car or home, you MUST get an accessory kit (either home or car). websites claim that the universal kits for Sirius radios are compatible with the Stiletto 2. THIS IS MOSTLY INCORRECT! the external antenna is standard, but does not plug directly into the receiver. a cradle (included in kits) is necessary to play Sirius through your car or home stereo. the AC/DC adapter is also a different size and voltage. if you buy the home kit, you can only connect to a stereo via audio cables. this is a change from other receivers, which allow either a wired connection or have a built-in FM transmitter. only the cradle that comes with the car kit allows you to connect to a stereo over an FM signal. my suggestion to those that want the Stiletto 2 to work on any stereo or have previous Sirius radio kits is to buy the Stiletto 2 car kit only, and use your previous antennae to run the radio at home using the car cradle.

i give the Stiletto 2 a three-star rating. it has very nice features and a good look, but some of its advertised capabilities are misleading. there is no reason that the unit should not be able to FM transmit to any stereo without a car cradle, other than to gouge customers out of another $50.

Radar detector manufacturers have always promised the ultimate in traffic ticket protections, but for years they delivered something less than adequate when comparing the final product to the advertised claims.

Some of this is still evident, even with this fine model, such as the claim to have increased response time to "instant on" photo-radar by 200%. This is supposed to be a good thing and make you feel more protected, and in a sense you are, but the mere fact that instant on radar is so quick that if you are the targeted vehicle and you are speeding, you are done. Twenty years ago these devices were very expensive, promised the world and delivered a lot of useless noise. With this model of Passport, I believe these units have evolved into a useful tool for everyday driving and interstate speeding.

I've been testing this unit out on the highways on New England and had great results. The most important feature is the lack of false alarms. Before I bought this unit my old radar detector gave me so many false alarms I simply grew used to the sound of it chirping. Now, when I hear a noise, I know it is most likely something I need to react to.

The range is terrific and actually does a nice job of giving you a little warning before you reach the speed trap. Pay attention to this unit because it gives out a lot of information that you can use.

Features I like:

· Using the multi-source expert mode, it can monitor more than one signal at a time: A lot of traffic lights up here are so seldom used that they incorporate a X-band radar unit to know when a car is waiting at a red light. I have driven over a one lane bridge recently that had a sensor on both sides and a speed trapping state trooper hidden in the brush waiting to catch me. This unit alerted me to each signal, along with the relative strength as expressed in a strength meter. This was very nice, I felt like I was in total control, knowing how many sources were transmitting and allowing me to figure out what to do. Your readout will show all of the alerts at once, each with its own strength bar.

· You can set it up to tell you the numerical frequency of the transmission. This is very nice for you hard core tech heads out there. I'd like to see this feature exploited further and have it learn the unique signatures of different devices and report them (imagine a warning: state trooper, same one as yesterday!). It is also a way of seeing different sources, though different than the multi-source expert mode described above.

· You can set it up to monitor your system voltage and give you a constantly updating readout, unless an alert is triggered and then you wont see it again until all radar sources are gone. Wow, I can't tell you how impressed I am with this feature. To sum it up in one word, troubleshooting. It's just as good as hooking up a fluke to your electrical system and monitoring it while driving. In a couple of drives you can evaluate your battery, alternator and electrical system, all the while monitoring for radar traps. Who thinks of this stuff!

· You can have the display do some cool scanning type graphics. All tech type people like to impress their under funded, low knowledge friends and girlfriends with this graphic trick that makes your radar detector look more like the eye piece for a Xylon warrior from the old Battlestar Galactica (by your command....) It gives you a comfortable feeling that the airwaves are being scanned, and the device is functional. This is a good thing, since you will rarely hear from it.

. This unit is very customizable and can be programmed easy. You can read the official reviews to get the details, but I will tell you that it is very easy.

Also, forget what you thought about radar detectors of the past. This unit is actually heavy and reflects the amount of circuitry and detection equipment that was installed.

Never forget that radar detectors are a tool for you to use. They gather information about your surroundings. They are not fool proof and cannot be relied upon exclusively. I've spent several hundreds of dollars on detectors over the years, but this is the one I have been looking for.

By the way: Do not buy a radar jammer. They simply do not work. I've owned them, I've used them, I've thrown them out the window.

Another note: The price you see here on Amazon is a good one. You will be hard pressed to find it any cheaper and many places cannot even get them. I would not trust the refurb units you see on [other websites], but even those are going to be within [range]of this unit.

I bought a Passport 8500 to replace a BEL 610i, mainly to eliminate falsing. I routinely drive an Interstate that is a microwave corridor and the BEL was nearly useless in this area. The 8500 was astounding at rejecting false signals. I have experienced one "instant-on" scan of my speed and the detector response was quite good. What impressed me was it's ability to detect laser lidar. The 8500 went off, and I thought it was my phone. I reached for it, then realized that the ring was continuous. I saw the 8500 display and the LASER warning, and only then did the officer-user of the lidar come into sight just over a gentle hill. The 8500 detected the lidar from, I assume, scattering. And this was driving south into a partly sunny sky.

I bought this to record my driving just in the case I get ticketed for an offense I did not commit. Very easy to setup, and the suction cup sticks very strongly to the windshield. It comes off also with very little effort.

This charger has performed perfectly for charging & maintaining my lawn tractor battery. I've had this charger for a little over 9 months and used it 3 or 4 times on our car. I like it's compact size and the 3 lights, power on (red), charging (yellow) and charged (green). I also bought the Schumacher EC-25 25' Cable Connector Extension Cord.

I don't what the difference is between this model and the Schumacher SEM-1562A 1.5 Amp Speed Charge Maintainer (which costs less) but keep in mind before you buy that other model#, it notes the Proposition 65 warning (for California residents).

I am using two of these charger/maintainers, as well as some other brands. This model claims to have temperature compensation, and although I have not used it yet in any temperature extremes, I have not seen any change in voltage in a small band of temperatures between 67 F and 78F. Let's assume it will compensate at temperatures out of that range, but even in that range, I've seen it raise voltage to 14.8, 14.9, even over 15V a few brief times. Fortuneately I've never seen it maintain over 14.8 for more than about 1.5 hours, so it probably has not done too much damage to my batteries, but I'd feel way safer it it stopped at around 14.4V, since it has no setting for battery type. Definitely not the one to use for GEL batteries. What's strange, but I find acceptable, is that in FLOAT mode, it's only about 13.25V, which is a bit less that would be expected when it charges at higher-than-normal voltages. Bottom line, is that since it doesn't normally stay at the excessive voltage levels for a very long time, and it stays then forever at a safe 13.25V (at around 70 F), it's probably a relatively safe charger/maintaner for such a cheap price, assuming it will voltage compensate at temperature extremes. If you are willing to pay a lot more for a far better charger/maintainer, look to BatteryMINDer 2012 or 12248 or Xantrex for the best, as far as I have ben able to determine, but for such a low price, I think this Schumacher ProSeries will most likely do more good than harm to most wet (non-GEL) lead-acid batteries.

I purchased the Kooltron Battery Saver Model GJ1125 last august and have never regretted it. I use it in my Semi Tractor as sometimes it may sit for 3-5 days and has never run the battery down to far not to start my truck. Even in the winter which can be severe here in Idaho. One advantage I have over an auto is multi batteries. It never sits there and clicks on and off as in some other reviews. This may be due to a lot more amps. I am confident enough in this product that I am ordering one for my brother's b-day to use in his truck.

My SUV has an always-on plug in the back, and I use it to plug in my Koolatron 12V Travel Cooler (D24).

But since it is always-on, I would need to unplug it when I stopped for any length of time to ensure my battery would not be drained.

This box plugs in between your 12v lighter socket and any 12v device. The box monitors the voltage on the line and cuts the device off when the battery goes below 10 volts -in hopes that there is still enough charge to start your car when you get back.

Not a bad idea, i've used one of these with my cooler for some time, also a 12v jumpstarter box with my cooler. This model is a little pricy IMHO

To the other reviewer who lighter socket was switched with the ignition key, i'd suggest you see a stereo shop and they can wire you up another socket that is on all the time, or you can find the parts and do it yourself.

Looking at the price, and knowing a bit about electronic circuits, I did expect that this unit would cut the power off at let's say 10.5V and restore it at 12.3V. In this scenario it would cut the cooler off as the battery gets low and it would fire it back up as the engine runs and the alternator is charging the battery.

This is NOT the case and here is why this switch is totally useless and probably damaging/reducing the lifespan of connected coolers or other equipment on top of it.

As the voltage gets critical it will cycle on and off. Like the turn signal, but much faster. This is very disappointing and I can not not express how mad I am that a company is selling such a cheap circuit for such a high price. This unit is not doing/working how it should.

If I did not get a broken item (I doubt it, reading some other reviews) someone could feel this is like highway robbery. I did try to call the company and after being on hold for quite a while I was getting tired of it and just sent the item back.

Bottom line:

Don't get this item. The idea is good, this particular one is not what it should be. Wait for another "battery saver". They are hard to find and I did not find anther one yet.

We bought this product for our iPhone 3G and it worked fine. However, we noticed that the battery would drain very quickly when we plugged it into the iPhone 4 that we recently purchased. I bought the battery right before a trans-Atlantic flight. The battery is small enough to fit in your pocket, but powerful enough to last all day. Ok, I bought one about 3 weeks ago, it barely charged the iphone once before saying that there was no charge left so I assumed it was faulty and bought another one (as the old model worked great). Unfortunately same thing. It charges the iphone 4 for about 15 minutes until there is about 3/4 of the iphone charged, and then the blue bars go from 4 or 5 to nothing and it has to be completely recharged. I know the Droid X is an old phone (by now), but when I had my phone plugged into the wall charger, the phone began exhibiting some ridiculously strange behavior such as: opening and closing random apps on its own, opening the messaging app (droid OS default) and typing messages to people in my contact list, creating calendar events with gibberish in the description, and so on. In short, it seemed like my phone was possessed! Never happened with any other charger or when the phone was not plugged in.

I could only attribute it to the wall charger...very weird. Other than that, everything else was great.

Seems to be an excellent product. Easy to use and much sturdier, little flex and more accurate than my plastic calipers.

I'm just a shadetree mechanic, so my precision needs are not high. That said, I've used high precision calipers and micrometers before. I think this product is about as good as the money I paid. The slider does not extend as smoothly as a higher end caliper, and the construction quality is not as great. However, I do get 0.01mm accuracy (claimed) at under $20. I think this will be good enough for me to measure chain slack and hose width for my motorcycle.

Got my GPS Angel recently and like it very much. First of all, it's just tiny about 2.5 inches wide. It also doesn't look like anything someone would want to steal because no one would know what it is. The cord is long and not the curly type, so I was able to fully conceal it from view. It gives both visual and audible warnings of red light and speed cameras. It is supposed to alert near school zones, but it's missed a couple of times. No biggie for me. It can take a minute or so to acquire the GPS signal, but once connected I've had no problems unless going under an overpass or some such obstruction. then the signal comes right back. I especially like being able to add "points of interest": You press one of the kidney shaped buttons on top and it adds that location to the database. Perfect for known speed traps. Also, there was no set up time. It worked right out of the box. And get this, online updates are free for life! So it's a great value at purchase time and over the life of the unit.

As I understand it, due to budget crunches in communities accross the country, police forces are being reduced mostly in the traffic divisions. In their place, more red light and speed cameras are being installed all the time. They are cheap (and in some cases free) for communities to acquire and operate, they generate a steady revenue stream, they work 24 hours a day, everyday, with no days off, and they are infalliable.

I've heard the database is not 100% up to date. Fine, that may be so. I'll still take 90% 95% protection for a one time charge for a lifetime. Woundn't you?

Worthless!

Takes more than a minute to acquire satellites on a clear day and just about never on an overcast/raininy day.

Frequently loses satellites on tree lined streets.

Not able to control alerts enough to use in a city that has cameras at just about every other intersection. In other words, it is still warning you about the last camera and when the next is encountered.

Is proximity based, so goes off if near a camera and not if approaching.

Basically unusable and unreliable.

WIRELESS TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR

Hello All,

I've had this Motorcycle Tire Pressure Monitoring System for about 6 months now... So I feel I can now review them.

Fitment:

Well, it couldn't be easier to fit these. You simply remove your valve stem caps, and substitute these. They take little "pill" or "button" batteries that slip easily into place. Then you simply install the AAA battery in the receiver unit, turn it on, and follow the easy instructions to program your high and low pressure warnings and temperatures.

Functionality:

The units react very quickly, and you can test this by just twisting the caps open a little to let the pressure between the cap and the valve get out... The cap will immediately send the low pressure signal to the "key fob" display, which will beep its alert and vibrate. Provided that the batteries in all the units are good.

Pros:

Easy to fit, pretty easy to program, external to tire (so no need to dismount you wheel, then the tire, then fit those internal units, then mount it all back up again; knowing that you will have to do it all over again when the sending unit batteries go flat!). The units are pretty accurate. In my experience within 0.5-1.0 psi of the actual pressure (checked against several very accurate gauges). This system is quite a bit less expensive than the other "internal" units, especially when you consider the labor to fit them if you are not doing the install yourself. And it is way cool to be able to check your pressures at the touch of a button. Also, if you attach the unit to the bars or dash (or close to body so you can feel the vibration while you are riding), it could save you some real problems by alerting you to a low pressure situation BEFORE you actually have a totally flat tire. Which could mean that you pull off the freeway earlier, into a Truck Stop, where there are facilities to repair your tire. Which is way better than sitting at the side of the highway, trucks and cars whizzing by, trying to lift the front end of you bike in the air to change the front tire!!!

Cons:

AND PAY ATTENTION HERE!!! These units are no substitute for checking your tire pressures with an accurate gauge!!! They can sometimes show the last pressure registered, and if you don't pay attention to the TINY "link" icon, you might think all is OK, when it isn't!!! Also, you need to pay VERY close attention to the "power" icon. As if you get low power in the monitor, or the sending units, the icon will illuminate, BUT again, it still showed the previous reading. The monitor is a "Key Fob" style, with no facility to mount it on the dash or bars. This means that in all likelyhood, the unit will sit in a jacket pocket (like mine did), where you can't effectively feel the vibration (or mistake it for your phone) while riding with all the wind buffeting and noise. A big imporvement to the unit would be to supply it with some form of mount... Or even Velcro... And a way to easily remove the chain that attaches to your keys...

BUT BIGGEST ISSUE HERE IS NOT ERRANT READINGS... IT IS SAFETY!!!

It is my opinion (after actually experiencing this first hand), that these units should NEVER be installed on bikes which have rubber valve stems! They should ONLY BE INSTALLED ON MOTORCYCLES THAT HAVE METAL VALVE STEMS, PERIOD! Over time, cruising on the freeway at higher speeds, cross country where one might run higher than the posted limit, the constant pressure of the weight of the valve caps under centrifugal force of the wheel rotating at high speed, WILL BEND THE RUBBER VALVE STEM OVER TO THE RIM!!! Do this time after time (speeding up and slowing down again as you do on the freeway) and eventually it CAUSES THE VALVE STEM TO TEAR, causing it to lose air. If you are lucky like I was, you are ONLY left at the side of the road with a flat FRONT tire, a broken valve stem, in the middle of nowhere on a Sunday!!!!!!!! That's if you are LUCKY! If you are not... The consequences of a high speed rapid deflation of the front tire (as mine was) could be catastrophic!!!

Conclusion:

A great little system IF...

1. You make sure your batteries are always in a good condition, and you program it correctly.

2. You really PAY ATTENTION to the TINY icons in the corners of the screen of the TPMS monitor.

3. YOU NEVER FIT THESE TO RUBBER VALVE STEMS (I'm pretty sure they are fine on metal ones, especially the steel kind with "O-Rings").

4. You keep the monitor where it can be seen, or felt easily while riding the bike... Otherwise you lose the warning aspect of the unit.

Things to think about...

It's a pretty expensive way to check your tire pressures... Especially when an inexpensive (less than $5) gauge will do the same thing... And that when you check you tire pressures manually, you are also way closer to your tires, which allows you to assess their condition, and maybe note uneven wear, or a cut, or a nail... Whatever. Bottom line is you may see something you would have otherwise seen by checking manually (just as you do when cleaning you bike frequently).

My issue is not with the performance of this product but rather its safety when installed on a rubber valve stem. The manufacturer continues to endorse the use of the TireGard external pressure monitors on rubber valve stems. Do so at the risk of serious injury or death. Rubber valve stems cannot withstand the centrifugal and other forces of this "weight" added to the end of the valve stem and can fail. Fortunately for me, I was able to control the motorcycle and avoid a potentially serious crash. If you have purchased these and have installed them on a rubber valve stem, remove them immediately until you can fit the wheel with a metal valve stem. If you notice bending of the valve stem you are one step away from ultimate failure. Replace with metal valve stems immediately!

Please also report any failures or deformity of rubber valve stems while using TireGard external monitors to info@BigBikeParts.com

I sincerely hope this info prevents someone from losing their life due to the potentially dangerous consequences when used on rubber valve stems.

Having found a couple of nails in the rear motorcycle tire I was concerned about not knowing what was happening when riding. Getting a flat on two wheels is a lot different than on 4 wheels. My ride a BMW F800 ST could not be fitted with the factory tire pressure monitoring system. It either came with the bike from the factory or you had to find a non OEM system. I looked at several options, non of them were very promising (either way too much work to install, or the wireless valve stem caps would not clear the front calipers. Then I saw the TireGard mentioned on a BMW discussion board and decided to try it. Very eeasy to install and the TPM valve stem caps clear the front caliper (not by much) but there is enough room. The readings are fairly accurate, but I wish the monitor could be fixed mounted on the bike. The important aspect is if the tire pressure is going down while riding I will be able to see the pressure being lost in real time. It is a pricey system but it works for me.

Overall this little device is a pretty cool way to monitor tire pressure. For that it seems to be accurate with no air loss (in 2 months) through the valve stem sensors. I took off the key chain and with Velcro, stuck it to the back of the fairing for easy viewing/removing (in case of rain). Unfortunately the front tire temperature sensor is defective. It rises only to the low 80's on hot Hawaiian highways. This temp is frequently below ambient and it always about 20 lower than the rear sensor. I tried the resets per over the phone help but it made no difference. I returned the TPMS to the distributor and the replacement does the exact same thing.

So don't be surprised if the front tire sensor is wrong, for me to get 2 that malfunctioned means that defective units may be the rule rather than the exception.. however, just add 20 degrees and your are probably going to have the correct front temp.

The unit is probably useless as an unseen pocket sensor. The buttons could be constantly pushed, reset, light on etc.... it doesn't have a lockout button. It needs to be seen like a speedo/tach. This would have been a much better unit it were designed for fairing or handlebar mounting in a weather proof case. Maybe the next version will address these shortcomings.

i HAVE BEEN USING THIS REMOTE PRESSURE measuring device for 7-8 months on my Honda GoldWing GL1200 cruiser. Aside from the WIRELESS TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR being a reliable electronic instrument, there are two good reasons for why it serves my purposes.

First of all, my GoldWing bike weights upwards of 900 lbs without me on it. With me, it is goes up to 1200 lbs. With that much weight on two tires, you really don't want to see a tire blow moving at 70 miles per hour.

Before installing this wireless tire monitor, I was unaware that my front tire had a VERY slow leak in it ... at a rate of maybe 5lbs every 2-3 days. My ride was getting a little spongy, and steering was starting to be a little off. Measuring tire pressure on a GoldWing is a huge pain-in-the-butt! The dual front brake disks make getting a tire gauge into the air valve very awkward. The back tire is no easier because the hard side saddle bags and drive shaft (and also rear brake disk) get in the way. Human nature being what it is, I tended NOT to measure tire pressure as often as I should have. Still, with the spongy feeling, I forced myself to measure the pressure ... which was 20lbs below what it should have been. Yikes! Although I promptly fixed THAT problem, that's when I realized I need a better way to keeps tabs on my tire pressures.

Once installed ... which takes all of 2-3 minutes ... the system works GREAT! Now, every time just before going on a ride, I can read the tire pressure front and back within +/0.1 lbs. If the tires feel funny during the ride, I can at least know what the pressures are with the push of a button. Being able to do that is worth every penny of this wireless system.

In my experience, there are no down sides to using the wireless pressure measuring system.
