Radar detector manufacturers have always promised the ultimate in traffic ticket protections, but for years they delivered something less than adequate when comparing the final product to the advertised claims.

Some of this is still evident, even with this fine model, such as the claim to have increased response time to "instant on" photo-radar by 200%. This is supposed to be a good thing and make you feel more protected, and in a sense you are, but the mere fact that instant on radar is so quick that if you are the targeted vehicle and you are speeding, you are done. It happens so fast that a 1000% increase would not help you in that scenario.

But, every millisecond counts!

This unit does not have voice alerts (Low importance for me) or a built in compass (a fading feature that I like).

Fast driving, tech savvy drivers like me have always used our radar detectors as a tool in our speed driving kit. I don't rely on it exclusively, but I do learn the road and where I will here a beep and where I don't. I try to drive so that the radar signal I am intercepting is being aimed at a car in front of me so that I can take time to react because if they are aiming at me, it is a slim chance that I can react fast enough to help.

Twenty years ago these devices were very expensive, promised the world and delivered a lot of useless noise. With this model of Passport, I believe these units have evolved into a useful tool for everyday driving and interstate speeding.

I've been testing this unit out on the highways on New England and had great results. The most important feature is the lack of false alarms. Before I bought this unit my old radar detector gave me so many false alarms I simply grew used to the sound of it chirping. Now, when I hear a noise, I know it is most likely something I need to react to.

The range is terrific and actually does a nice job of giving you a little warning before you reach the speed trap. Pay attention to this unit because it gives out a lot of information that you can use.

Features I like:

· Using the multi-source expert mode, it can monitor more than one signal at a time: A lot of traffic lights up here are so seldom used that they incorporate a X-band radar unit to know when a car is waiting at a red light. I have driven over a one lane bridge recently that had a sensor on both sides and a speed trapping state trooper hidden in the brush waiting to catch me. This unit alerted me to each signal, along with the relative strength as expressed in a strength meter. This was very nice, I felt like I was in total control, knowing how many sources were transmitting and allowing me to figure out what to do. Your readout will show all of the alerts at once, each with its own strength bar.

· You can set it up to tell you the numerical frequency of the transmission. This is very nice for you hard core tech heads out there. I'd like to see this feature exploited further and have it learn the unique signatures of different devices and report them (imagine a warning: state trooper, same one as yesterday!). It is also a way of seeing different sources, though different than the multi-source expert mode described above.

· You can set it up to monitor your system voltage and give you a constantly updating readout, unless an alert is triggered and then you wont see it again until all radar sources are gone. Wow, I can't tell you how impressed I am with this feature. To sum it up in one word, troubleshooting. It's just as good as hooking up a fluke to your electrical system and monitoring it while driving. In a couple of drives you can evaluate your battery, alternator and electrical system, all the while monitoring for radar traps. Who thinks of this stuff!

· You can have the display do some cool scanning type graphics. All tech type people like to impress their under funded, low knowledge friends and girlfriends with this graphic trick that makes your radar detector look more like the eye piece for a Xylon warrior from the old Battlestar Galactica (by your command....) It gives you a comfortable feeling that the airwaves are being scanned, and the device is functional. This is a good thing, since you will rarely hear from it.

. This unit is very customizable and can be programmed easy. You can read the official reviews to get the details, but I will tell you that it is very easy.

Also, forget what you thought about radar detectors of the past. This unit is actually heavy and reflects the amount of circuitry and detection equipment that was installed.

Never forget that radar detectors are a tool for you to use. They gather information about your surroundings. They are not fool proof and cannot be relied upon exclusively. I've spent several hundreds of dollars on detectors over the years, but this is the one I have been looking for.

By the way: Do not buy a radar jammer. They simply do not work. I've owned them, I've used them, I've thrown them out the window.

Another note: The price you see here on Amazon is a good one. You will be hard pressed to find it any cheaper and many places cannot even get them. I would not trust the refurb units you see on [other websites], but even those are going to be within [range]of this unit.

I have had several other brands of radar detectors ranging from $50 to $150. None can even compare. Of course none were the brand escort either. I do not know if this quality is standard among their product line but this radar detector is awesome. It has an auto feature that automatically senses where you are at while you are driving. I bought a Passport 8500 to replace a BEL 610i, mainly to eliminate falsing. I routinely drive an Interstate that is a microwave corridor and the BEL was nearly useless in this area. The 8500 was astounding at rejecting false signals. I have experienced one "instant-on" scan of my speed and the detector response was quite good. What impressed me was it's ability to detect laser lidar. The 8500 went off, and I thought it was my phone. I reached for it, then realized that the ring was continuous. I saw the 8500 display and the LASER warning, and only then did the officer-user of the lidar come into sight just over a gentle hill. The 8500 detected the lidar from, I assume, scattering. And this was driving south into a partly sunny sky.

Despite the price, I am very impressed with the 8500.

I received my Escort Passport 8500 one week ago. I love it more as time goes on. I used to be very nervous about the local state patrol on our main highway to the next town. My last detector wouldn't read the signal until we saw each other. I finally got this detector after a lot of reading and after visiting testing sites, like radar test dot COM. You keep this in your trunk and when you want to jump a car, you bring it next to your battery. Attach the positive and negative connectors to your cars battery and it starts in an instant. It is amazing. It also has a meter to show if it needs to be charged and it has a bright light that can be turned on when it's dark outside, especially during a rain storm.

This is an inexpensive battery booster. No doubt it will do the job. However, it does not have an on/off switch for the cables. The cables remain hot even when clamped to their posts; I tested them with a voltmeter. This can be potentially dangerous if the battery charger is not secured in a vehicle and it rolls around in trunk. The battery cables are not very secure at all and tend to hang towards the sides. They can rub off. I can see sparks flying if the cables touch!

The positive cable tends to cover the 12 volt outlet. Very annoying. There is no cord. You must plug an extension cord into the back. The cables are quite short; they could use at least another six inches if not more.

I bought this back in February and had't had to use it until this morning (it's mid-November) when my car refused to start. I was a little trepidatious as there were mixed reviews when I bought it, the instructions state over and over that it needs to be recharged every 30 days and it's been at least 2 months since I last plugged it in; but I hooked it up, turned the key and vroom, my car came back to life. Could not have been simpler.

A couple minor inconveniences: The cables are awfully short, but long enough that I could connect them to the battery and rest the unit on my car frame without crossing any wires. And as others have stated, there's no cord to plug the unit in to charge it you need a 3-prong extension cord to do so, unless your outlets are situated perfectly to plug this directly into the wall.

The only reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is the price. If I didn't know better I would guess this product was from Apple. I purchased this unit specifically for my wife's Nissan leaf. We were being charged $2000 At the dealer and maybe more just to have this same unit installed at our home. It does what it says it does... plays DVDs, JPG and MPEG4/AVI files from SD and USB sticks.

My intent for this is to share photos and video with friends and family without them having to squint at a tiny ipod screen or lug around a laptop. It does the job nicely.

Be aware that the TV tuner is analog only, and will not get reception from the air waves in North America, unless hooked up to cable TV or a analog-to-digital converter.

Feels cheap, the buttons lack tactile finesse they make very loud click noises.

Speakers sound "tinny" at best.

The manual is in "Engrish", almost comically translated, and requires some interpretation through context clues if you're in tune to how gadgets work, you'll be able to figure things out, but if you require step-by-step instruction, look elsewhere. There are numerous unexplained settings in the menus.

You will need to use the remote to access all of the functions, so don't lose it!

I was hoping it would play other video files like WMV from the USB, but it does not, it plays MPEG4 and AVI only.

There are no specs to be found on the screen resolution, although it doesn't look bad... unfortunately it does not auto-detect the screen ratio, and requires futzing through the menus to switch between 4:3 and 16:9 this is the biggest disappointment as far as I'm concerned.

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent value as long as your expectations are in line with a no-name low-buck import.

It's worth every penny of the $70. Video quality is decent, and when loaded up with JPEG's, AVI's, etc., it's a cheap alternative to ipod and the screen size is perfect for sharing pictures and video while still compact enough to travel.

To sum up, if budget is the biggest factor, it's a winner but if you can pony up a few extra bucks, stick with a tested brand name.

The only reason I'm giving this a 4 star is because I still haven't figured out a way to get the TV working ( being lazy as I am in reading the manual).

The DVD, USB works fine, AUX works fine, SD card works well too. I haven't tried the copy feature yet.

The game that comes with it is slow and pretty basic, but hey, we are buying this primarily to watch videos stored on various devices , and not to do gaming, are we?

I bought two of these just before a 7.5 hour trip with two boys (age 7 and 9). They liked watching movies a little, but what they really liked was the games that are on the disk that it comes with. I played games on it to see what it has and I was hooked on Contra for a while. It comes with a lot of classic 8-bit Nintendo games like that. The only thing I could not get working was the TV. I think it may need a stronger antenna than the little five-inch one it is packaged with. Even without this I love them and would recommend them to any one considering buying a portable DVD player.

I have tried all NTSC,PAL dvds it works fine. VCDs works fine. So far so good.

When i plugged in my external hard drive into the usb,it did not recognize it. I got the message NO device, and on my other one, device not supported.. They are latest external hard drives from seagate and western digital, and my blu ray players support them. So, disappointed with the usb support. But, It supports my pen flash drive.. I am thinking whether to return it or not, because i bought this primarily for the usb support.

Another drawback is, the video quality. i had coby and philips before and i found the video on the other players better than this one.

So, don't kid yourself into thinking that this $70 no-brand device is secret top-shelf material ... it's a knock-off junker with clear compromises and cheap trinkets stuck in to lure in customers. However, having relied on this DVD player almost every day for a train ride, I must say that I'm quite happy with this DVD Player for the most part and would recommend it for those who (like me) more often take chances on low-cost stuff rather than buy expensive equipment that'll likely won't measure up or will get thrashed anyway.

PROS:

= Happily plays lots of the video files I throw at it. Even though it's a DVD player, it has actually been capable of running many 720p DivX files (I would have assumed a 480p max) without trouble. MP4 files have been hit or miss, but I've had lots of troubles with MP4 on even powerful devices like PS3.

= Remembers the spot you left off watching a DVD movie, even when the power dies.

= SD/MS/MMC card slot to play videos, also can load downloaded (DivX) files from a DVD-ROM.

= Very light and surprisingly sturdy. I've beaten this thing up already in my backpack, but it's showing no signs of wear.

= The swivel is actually solid construction, and I'm using it more than I expected. It's convenient sometimes to be able to swap it to flat mode or to turn the DVD base opposite of the screen to save space on my desk.

= Never had a failure of the shock resistance. It keeps playing even when walking around.

= Has a remote controller. Also, MOST of the functions can be accessed with the on-deck controls.

= Plenty of accessories included: car adapter, USB, cheapie heaphones, antenna. No worries over missing parts.

CONS:

= Battery indicator not on screen. (Actually, I don't even know if there's a flashing light or any other indicator of it dying? There is an "On" light but I've never used it to tell juice level.) The DVD player just up and dies with little to no warning. I get 2-3 hours of use out of it (I know I've watched 2 movies without charging, but I've never timed it exactly.)

= Doesn't seem to remember the spot you left off watching a DivX movie (curiously enough, DVDs work exactly how I want.)

= Has a FM and TV mode, but FM needs the add-on antenna (not rigged to receive signal from headphone wire like most portable radios) and I'm pretty sure the TV is analog-only, so both are pretty useless.

= Only composite input/output jacks (but hey, at least they're there.)

PUSHES:

= TFT LCD Screen is really contrasty, and overly-saturated. It'll blow out your whites in bright shows (I've been watching horror movies the last week though and it's played fine in the dark for me.) It's for sure not high-quality, but it's very clean and free of banding or bleeding or other issues that cheap screens sometimes suffer. Subtitles also show up fine in all cases I've had. It also plays decently in glare situations, knocking out completely in bright sunlight but usually pretty visible if you can find some shade. Overall, I like it a whole lot when watching live-action DVDs, less so for watching animated shows (particularly bright programs with 'bloom' effects,) and home DVD recordings with low bitrates will show the compromises. For the most part, I'm quite happy with the screen quality compared to other devices I see at electronics stores for much higher prices.

= It comes with a game controller and a "classic game" disc, which is straight up bootleg. The games don't run that well and the controller isn't very accurate, so for sure don't buy it for that. But I can't imagine that adds to the price tag.

= Volume is pretty loud (which was a problem on an old player of mine.) Volume control, however, is digital and on the face, and if you need to crank it down quickly, it'll take a sec.

= There are multiple Set-Up and Menu settings, very confusing to have multiple settings for brightness.

All in all, you can do better than this DVD Player if you want to spend the cash, but for $70, you should get your money's worth no problem.

Updated April 2012: The player conked out on me. It won't turn on when I plug it in to charge. I don't know what caused it to kick the bucket, but I can't get it to come back.

That said, I used this player EVERY day on workdays, so over a year of constant use isn't unreasonable to me for just $70. So, I'm not going to change my score.(I bought a replacement from another company and it has had issues from day one, I'm considering buying another of these even though my last one broke.) If that lifespan is not your idea of value though, you've been warned.

I bought a brand new 16GB micro SD card with adapter because when I tried to put in a card with data on it, it wouldn't format it.

I installed this mirror so that the power cord is hidden underneath the roof carpet and trim panels. It looks good this way because it prevents the cord from hanging down in front of you. It looks more professional.

Recording with both cameras at the same time shows up choppy on the display ONLY WHILE RECORDING. Once the file has been saved and you go back to watch it, the video is a lot smoother.

I like that you can turn off the screen while you drive and it still records. This makes it much easier to actually use the mirror and if you are recording on the mirrors battery it will save some juice.

The night vision works fairly well. The leds are infrared so they wont obstruct your vision while recording. It records better than expected at night.

Make sure you set up the time accurately so the time stamp will be correct if an accident occurs.

This mirror works very well, I will post a second review if it stops working correctly.

I purchased the TYT UVF1 FM Transceiver about 45 days ago. I am new to amateur radio so I didn't want to spend $400 for a dual-band HT. The UVF1 performs well and for the money it is an excellent buy. I have been getting good signal reports on most repeaters in the area.

This radio is decent for the price. Gets out to repeaters 15-20 miles away. Reception is decent too. I am pleased with the quality. I do have problems using the software on windows 7 machines, however it works good on xp. Programming is easy with the software. The radio can be manually programmed fairly easily. Not as easy as the software, but not as bad as I read in some reviews. I would buy again. Purchased for backup and portability.

I had purchased this radio as a gift for a friend of mine who was new to amateur radio. She was unfamiliar with handheld radios. The radio is not a true dual band. It can switch between both bands however they must be on the same transmit & receive channels to talk. Programming is rather difficult however the speech does confirm each key as it is pressed I think the software and cable would be a great help for programming faster and more accurately . The manual is very difficult to understand however if you are familiar with other handhelds it can be figured out. That is why I have ordered the software and cable for her to assist in the programming. Overall for the value the radio works well and as claimed, we have been able to hit the local repeaters with no problems. The delivery was extremely fast and the seller has been excellent in helping out with the radio. The radio is a good value for the money and fast service.

Cant beat the price. More than I expected. I was told it would be hard to program with out the soft ware but its not. Buy it and take the time to look around on the net for tips, its well worth your time. I have the compatible Baofeng (that I love) but this is much easier to program with out the soft ware. No harder than an Icom or Alinco. Just don't expect the manual to tell you too much.

The T9500 radios are great radios and are the best I have used in the GMRS/FRS consumer family of radios for under $100. These radios have a great quick release belt clip and seem to be well built. The weather channels are a plus and sound clear through the T9500's speaker. I like the way the transmit button works. It has two switches built in. Press the button on the bottom and your radio transmits on low power (.5 watt). Press it on the top and your radio will transmit high power (2 watts on GMRS frequencies only).

Ok power, yes the T9500 transmits at 2 watts max power. It was hard for me to find this little known fact as this site and Motorola's own site conveniently neglect this info. I had to search the web and finally found it advertised on REI's web site. I am assuming the Motorola marketing folks thought this was a smart move as most consumers falsely believe more watts equates to longer transmission range.

I used to think watts were like horse power, the more the better. If you took two identical handheld radios one radio putting out 2 watts and the other radio putting out 5 watts you would get about a ¼ mile increase in transmission range under real world conditions with the 5 watt unit, all things being equal. But things are not equal from brand to brand and thank goodness for Motorola that this fact holds true. I have discovered over the years after using many different handhelds that what matters more is the quality of the electronic components, good circuit design, antenna elevation and electromagnetic conditions. Mostly what people will find with those other company's 5 watt units is they will use their battery up faster. If you think by getting an FCC license ($85) and a nice fancy new 2 5 watt high power GMRS radio you are going to see some massive improvement over your old .5 watt FRS radios think again. You will be lucky to get double the range of a FRS radio all other conditions being equal. I had the 5 watt Midland radios and took them back to get these and could not be happier with my decision. I don't see any difference in transmission range between the two sets and the Motorola's sound better and have better features.

This is a typical walkie talkie. It 22 channels in the 462 MHz range and has 2 watts of power using GMRS/FRS protocols. The "25-mile" range is the theoretical max (i.e. on the lunar surface).

The main problem with this technology is, well, other people. Imagine 1,000 people sharing 22 channels at Disney World. Motorola goes through great lengths to filter out other people. This is achieved by

(1) A special filter that blocks non-Motorola radios. A nice idea, but unfortunately 90% of walkie talkies are made by Motorola.

(2) A special privacy code which is assigned to each channel. Thus, all your Motorola radios have to be configured to the same privacy code in order to work with each other. Codes range from 1 to 121.

Nonetheless, even with filters and privacy encryption, if someone else is transmitting on your channel, there will be significant interference.

TriSquare TSX-300 eXRS 900MHz FHSS 2-Way Radio

These use a completely different technology. They transmit on 900 MHz in a 100% digital protocol. They sort of work like cell phones, without the service provider. Each radio is assigned a unique 10-digit number. No matter how crowded the ski resort, you'll always have a private channel for your family. These radios use 1 watt of power. The manufacturer does not provide distance performace, but claim that the radios have a range equal to or better than the Motorola Talkabouts.

Comparison

I took both brands with me and drove around town a typical suburban setting with residential and commercial areas. I rated voice quality on a scale of 0 to 3 as follows:

0 no reception

1 unintelligible

2 intelligible but noisy or garbled

3 intelligible and clear

I then plotted the average rating as a function of distance. The digital eXRS technology was superior to the GMRS/FRS model. The eXRS average rating was 25% better than the Motorola Talkabout. The max distance I could get in my area (having lots of trees and buildings) was .45 miles with either radio. The Motorola box claims "2 miles in an urban setting", which is just not true in my case.

The Motorol wins in overall voice quality. When the signal is strong, the voice quality of the Motorola was quite clear, whereas the eXRS unit always had a some background white noise.

Conclusion

The TriSquare eXRS radios lack a bit in overall voice quality. However, having great voice quality in a Motorola radio is worthless if you can't get through on a crowded channel. The benefits of the eXRS radios out way the one or two shortcomings, in my opinion. I tried the TriSquare units at a ski resort. They work just as advertised. No interference from other people whatsoever.

The TriSquare comes with two vox headsets, which work fairly well. The Motorola talkabout did not come with headsets, which cost $20 a piece at Radio Shack.

Niether the Motorola Talkabout nor the TriSquare eXRS seem particularly rugged or weather resistant, so I'd rate them the same in that regard.

The NOAA weather reception on the TriSquare was pretty bad. I have two other NOAA radios, which work just fine in my area. The Talkabout had very good NOAA reception.

I buy a pair of FRS radios pr. year, on the average. Radios like these are great to tack on to the kids when they run around the neighbourhood. I bought my first pair in 1999 I feel I have some experience, this pair of radios beeing my 8th pair or so.

The radios looked cool, although bigger than expected. The charging stand is practical, the kids use batteries like I owned a battery factory, so I can appreciate anything rechargeable. The range is better than I am used to, I guess it is mostly due to the fairly long antennas.

Now to my main two gripes:

The audio is beyond awful. I am a ham radio operator with a comprehensive understanding of radio electronics, also professionally. And I fail to understand what they have done to make the audio so incredibly bad. It sounds like someone is talking through a very long plastic tube. It's garbled, distorted and metallic sounding. This -mustbe a design flaw, I cannot think that this passed basic Q/A testing. My 10-year old, after trying to talk to me many times, finally broke down and called me on the phone from his friends house. I have had Unidens, Cobras and Midlands, but these are my first Motorolas.

My second gripe is just as serious when you try to make 10-year olds call home for dinner the radios do not start to transmit audio until maybe half a second after you push the PTT. This translates into much difficulty when you are used to an instant reaction when you key. Even my old tube HF set is faster than this. Again, this must be a design flaw. All my old, beat-up Unidens are instant (as well as smaller and with crystal clear audio, I might add).

Sorry, Motorola-guys, you need a second look at this design. I will make sure to field-test your FRS radios before considering another purchase.

I had seen the claim of 25 miles on these radios and hoped that they would be a good replacement for my bigger and bulkier Talkabout Distance DPS units that we had paid over $200 each for a few years ago. I had figured if the old radios only claimed a 5 mile range, and these claimed 25, that hopefully they would be similar. We use these radios when hunting in the mountains of Colorado and it's important to stay in touch with the members of the group.

After getting the units, I read the manual and played around with them for a while. The NOAA feature is nice, just a little static... I figured that would have warned us about that blizzard that came in last year.

When first trying to use the radios, their true quality became clear... like a tin can and a string. Within sight of one of my friends who was out in a boat, we could not make out what each other was saying. Either the quality of the microphones or the quality of the speakers was so poor that conversation was impossible at any distance. I do hold out some hope that the earbud and PTT microphone might solve some of the sound quality issues, but am not too optimistic at this point.

WARNING! DO NOT BUY THESE RADIOS!!!

I have alot of experience with two way radios. I live and work in the mountains of Montana and I know the limits and quirks of most types and brands of 2-way radios. I've had no less than a dozen or so models going all the way back to when Uniden had the top of the line with the 5 mile rangers. Anyway, I feel pretty confident that these radios have a serious design flaw whith the symptom of a sporadic cutout of the voice while talking. Its slight but very noticable with regular use. I feel personally that it may be a frequency thing but can't be certain. In addition, the sound of the audio is HORRIBLE! I was willing to overlook the sound quality in exchange for range but it simply isn't worth it. The sound is so bad that it strikes me that maybe Motorola should recall this product. It a serious dissapointment from a company who's name typically means quality. These may be the worst radio's I have ever owned. Sorry folks, this pair of radios are not worth the box they're shipped in.

New 3 Buttons Keyless Remote Key Shell Case For Chrysler Voyager Dodge Dakota Jeep Cherokee No Chip

This is a copy, not an original, and there are some problems with quality and dimensions/tolerances. The case is slightly tight for the electronics, though they will fit with enough finagling. Most annoying is that the metal contacts for the battery are not there, and removing them from the back of the old case is much harder than simply moving the electronics. As I only needed the rubber portion, I didn't do this, though it's worth noting that, as the size is slightly different, the new front was too loose to attach securely to my old back.

The rubber portion is an obviously cheaper rubber than the original, and doesn't have feedback on pressing a button as the original rubber does, even after ten years of use. It's unclear how long it will last.

That said, the whole item is less than $7. As others have noted, Chrysler will only replace the entire thing for a ridiculous amount, and apparently won't sell parts. For now, the item seems good enough, and is better than having a missing unlock button or paying ten times as much to replace the whole remote with an original.

Also, as others have noted, none of this reflects on the seller, about whom I have no complaints.

The key shell came earlier than I expected and was packaged securely. The product also made it easy to change key fobs. I would recommend to anyone looking for a quick inexpensive change.
