Parrot MKi9100 Advanced Bluetooth Hands-Free Music Kit
- Full system dedicated to keeping connected and entertained in your car
- Blue OLED 2 lines Screen lets you see whose calling or what song is playing
- Double microphone technology eliminates background and surrounding noise, including noise from inside the car
- Listen to your digital music in the car: compatible with all music sources, such as iPods, iPhones, and more
- Cutting-edge telephony functions like automatic phonebook synchronization, training-free multi-speaker voice recognition, and more
If you're never installed a car radio before, this probably isn't the first thing you should install yourself -I'd recommend having it professionally installed, since there are a good-sized handful of cables coming out of this thing that need to get routed properly, and you will most likely have to do some minor drilling and/or cutting to count the display and microphone if you want a really "clean" installation. As a yardstick, I probably spent 4 hours total on the installation.
Anyway, then, it does work as designed. The interface is fast and responsive, and I like the quality of the display. The software is pretty well thought out -perhaps A++-super-nerd programmers don't work at Parrot, but certainly above-average ones do. Pairing works quite nicely, automatically connecting to my phone when I get in the car & turn on the ignition and disconnecting shortly after the ignition goes off. When you're on a call, it asserts the "mute" line to the car's stereo which also pauses CD/USB/iPod playback, which is nice. I haven't had any of the communication failures/lock-ups that another reviewer here did.
Some minor gripes are as follows:
-While the noise reduction is effective up to ~45MPH (most callers wouldn't be able to guess you're calling from a car), it breaks down at highway speeds: Callers will still find you intelligible, but the occasional piece of a word is cut off and there is noticeable distortion. I attribute this so some degree to the rather noisy interior that is the Honda Fit (and most other inexpensive Hondas, for that matter) -at some level apparently the Parrot just can't reliably separate your voice from the as loud or louder cabin noise. Those with quieter cabins may not ever experience this problem. (I have tried turning "lateral noise detection" off and it does make things worse.)
-When hanging up calls, I often have to press the "hang up" button a couple of times. I suspect this is likely to be just as much the fault of the Parrot as my phone (a Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2), but it is a bit annoying.
-The manual is rather spartan. While it contains information on all the "basics," it does leave out explanations for some menu functions, which you're hence left to guess at. While most have names that make it easy to figure them out, there are a few where it's not quite clear exactly what the option does.
I think that this is a little on the spendy side for what you're getting, but overall I'm happy with it and feel that I've received a reasonable (if not spectacular) value for the money.

Update, mid-2011:
As other people have reported here, after about a year, the remote stopped working consistently. After messing around with it for awhile, it became clear that much of the "springiness" in the little "finger tab" contact that touches the negative side of the battery was gone and hence the battery no longer made good, solid contact to the electronics. I initially figured I'd stuff a small piece of aluminum foil (or just something stiff-but-spongy) underneath the contact, but after opening up the remote (there's just one screw under the label on the back side), I instead decided to fold the finger tab back on itself so that it's now more of a "U" shape and provides considerably more pressure between the battery and itself than ever before. So far this has worked quite well, and I'm most pleased with the 10-minute fix.
I do believe this is a design defect. Perhaps Parrot has fixed it by now? -They could readily solder down a differently shaped contact than the one my remote came with, so hopefully at some point they did update the design and fixed this problem.
One other thing: I've switched phones since writing the original review (now it's Android 2.3), and the "hang up" button does now work consistently.
Note that Parrot has released at least 3 or 4 firmware upgrades since my original review; I recommend obtaining them since, as least from where I'm sitting, the "fixed bugs / new features" list for the newer versions strike me as useful / attractive.

I had this Parrot professionaly installed on my Pioneer AVH-P4100DVD, it works great for making and receiving calls, windows down or up, people hear me great on the other side, noone has complained about hearing noises on the background.It pulls not only my contact list from my iPhone but also the battery charge level on the little screen. Voice commands work amazingly good.
The only complaint I have is that if you turn on the unit (when you turn on your car) with the iPhone already connected to the radio, when the iPhone starts to play music, the Parrot will detect it and WILL swap the music to bluetooth, that means that it will mute the radio, freeze the iPhone music controls on it and transfer both audio and iPhone controls to the Parrot unit.... I hate that. The only way I get around this is to connect the iPhone to my radio interface AFTER the Parrot has turned on completely and detected and sincronized the iPhone.
But, again, the bluetooth connectivity for making and receiving calls, works like a charm.

I got this kit to replace an aging CK3100. I'm a HUGE fan of Parrot hands-free kits. I don't like bluetooth headsets: mine was never charged when I needed it; was uncomfortable after a few minutes; got misplaced all the time.== background ==
When I originally purchased my ck3100, I was a bit skeptical about Parrot/had no experience with their products. After installing my ck3100, any doubts were erased from my mind. Parrot kits are solid and function very well.
I had a ck3100 and absolutely LOVED it. It did what it was supposed to, and didn't try to be more than what it was. I loved it so much, that I uninstalled it from my old car, and re-installed it in my current car. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and my trusty ck3100 died on me (after 6+ years).
Enter the MKi9100. While looking for a replacement for my beloved ck3100, I didn't want something with "a bunch of extra crap". The MKi9100 is a perfect upgrade. While researching a replacement for my ck3100, I made a list of "must haves" and "nice to haves".
== must have ==
the same basic functionality as the ck3100
the caller id screen should not be part of a stereo head unit
the display should be able to be mounted *anywhere*
a small footprint: no big screens, parts, etc.
must work seamlessly w/ iphone
== nice to have ==
music (bluebox -> stereo): via cable or bluetooth
have a remote control, so I can reach the buttons without moving/reaching too far (ya, I'm lazy)
== conclusions ==
::overall::
The MKi9100 meets all of my conditions, and has a few "bonus" features that I really like:
removable caller id screen (the small base mounts wherever you want, and the actual screen is detachable

Altec Lansing IMX2 Laptop Portable Audio
- Product Type - Speaker
- Localization - English
- System Components - 1 Piece System
- Response Bandwidth - N/A
So unlike the factory supplied docking cradle -you cannot just plug the XM2GO in and listen. It requires an (unsightly) extension cord to hook up the antenna.
Once attached the sound is ok though for the price I really think I'd consider playing the XM2GO through a stereo rather than purchasing this device.
Buy Altec Lansing IMX2 Laptop Portable Audio Now
This review is based on the current cost of this unit, which is less than one fifth of the original price.I do not use this with an XM receiver, I simply use it with a normal mp3 player, so I can not comment on any additional functionality it may have with the receiver (though, by appearance, it seems it does nothing other than have a spot for the antenna to go. It comes with an auxiliary input on the back, and a rather awkward ~4" cable. My mp3 player (a Sandisk Sansa e280) does not really fit in the dock in any manner; ah, the cost of being cheap!
The sound? Well, it isn't impressive, but it isn't going to make anyone retch, either. I'm picky about audio, and could describe in fifty ways how it doesn't sound very good, but, in all honesty, it is no better or worse than the majority of other similar sound docks, the majority of which cost far more.
The unit looks pretty good, just as it does in the photos. Much of it is hard plastic (which resonates and does hurt sound quality), even the speaker grille is thick, hard plastic(a rather questionable build decision, likely decided upon purely from a cost standpoint), though the upper surface where the volume control is a nice soft rubber. The +/volume control is handled by buttons under soft rubber. There's only a bit of tactile feedback, and the volume jump each time you press the button is too large, for fine control I need to change the volume on the mp3 player itself. All in all, I couldn't expect much better out of something that costs so little.
The biggest strength of this unit is that it runs off of 4 AA batteries, gets good battery life (~15 hours off of a set of alkalines), and can play loudly enough without distortion to attain normal listening levels in larger rooms.
If you're in the market for an iPod dock or something similar, and do not see a need for a remote control, clock, or other integration, this is definitely worthy of consideration. If you want real integration with your mp3 player, this is obviously not such a good choice, it's merely a battery powered portable speaker.
If you're looking for a unit that actually sounds good, look away from the plastic sound docks, and take a look at something like the Kloss Model 1.

This device solved my problem of listening to my XM2Go away from the home base...when a whole group of people wanted to hear the music. The speaker is providing great sound with goodamplification. The unit also recharges the XM2Go. The instructions were easy to follow.I was not going to renew my XM2GO when I came across the portable audio player. Just using batteries for power and the built in antenna, The Altec unit plays and sounds great outside. Just sitting in the shade or splashing in the pool my XM2Go has a new lease on life.I couldn't have been happier with this purchase. It was everything I hoped for. For the money, you couldn't find more clarity in sound. It is definitely worth buying. I use it when I'm camping and have no access to television. I am able to hear the news and music without turning on a television. Who needs a picture anyway.

SuperTooth Buddy Bluetooth Visor Speakerphone Car kit-Black
=============
This is a simple device and easy to use, but sometimes the Bluetooth stays connected through-out the house, while my truck is in the driveway. This is the main reason I give this 4-stars. Charging port is under the device and if you are running low, it is hard to keep it mounted while stuffing the charging cord in between the device and the sun-visor. That is a minor reason why I also give it 4-stars. [See Update at bottom, recently lowered to 3-stars]
What's in the box:
====================
1. SuperTooth Buddy bluetooth device
2. Car charger that uses mini-USB
3. Magnetic clip that allows you to use the device with the sun-visor closed or open
What I like about this:
========================
1. Simple to setup and use; it gets the job done!
2. I press the green button and I can do voice-dialing the same way as I do with just my phone.
3. Seems like a pretty good battery charge, seeing how I never turn it off... probably 2-3 weeks worth, but I do not make lenghty calls in my car
4. Good price
5. Good volume, nice and loud
6. Callers report my voice sounds clear, though they can tell I'm on a speakerphone
7. Seems to work well in this Texas heat, which probably exceeds 120degrees inside the car in July/August, my Motorola T-325 did not. [See Update!!]
What I don't like about this:
=============================
1. No caller id, it only rings or you have to look at your phone display for $20 more, the Jabra Cruiser2 and Motorola T-325 announces the caller's name!
2. Bluetooth signal is almost too strong. I've parked my car in the driveway and sometimes it stays connected. I kid you not, but I take aluminum foil and just wrap it around my phone when I come home and usually the bluetooth signal drops and it disconnects.
Why don't I just turn off bluetooth on my phone?? Well, more times than not, every time I turn off Bluetooth on the phone, I forget to turn it back on and usually it is when I am driving and the phone is not easily accessible. You don't want to go around digging for your phone, that's why you get a Bluetooth speakerphone like this :).
Why don't I just turn off the actual device?? Well, more times than not, every time I turn off the device, I forget to turn it on, and usually it's when someone calls me and only my phone rings, etc. At this point it is too late to turn it on and hope it pairs in time AND answer the call.
So my aluminum foil method is silly but it works. Just wrap it for a few minutes when you come home and it seems to stay disconnected. The next time you get in your car, it will auto-pair.
3. One time with my phone in a backpack in the back seat, it took almost 10 minutes after I went over a speed bump before it auto-paired. *Most* of the times, it pairs within a minute of getting to my car. I'll strike this as a freak occurrence and update this review later if it reoccurs.
4. You have to hold the power button for a full 10 seconds before it turns off, but then again, I rarely turn it off, for reasons mentioned above
5. The charging port is on the bottom of the device, not on the side, this makes it very difficult to charge while mounted on the sun visor or on the clip.
How does it compare to other devices I've used?
================================================
1. I've owned two of the Motorola T-325 and that device has *EVERY* feature I have ever wanted, from caller-id-NAME-announce, auto on/off, automatic low battery warning, long battery life, easy to charge while mounted on the sun-visor, wonderful wonderful device BUT POOR RELIABILITY. One flat out broke and the second one seems to overheat in Texas, it will connect and disconnect 10 times while driving. Both occurred outside the warranty period. If the Motorola T-325 was more reliable I'd still be using it. Motorola has a newer version called the Roadster, but I'm seeing the same reliability issues in the reviews.
How does it compare to other devices I've researched?
=======================================================
1. For about $20 more, the Jabra Cruiser2 seems to match the Motorola T-325 that I used to love, but the Cruiser2 does not have perfect reviews and no auto on/off. The Cruiser2 does do caller-id-NAME-announce though. If the reviews were more consistently better, I would've considered the Cruiser2.
2. The Motorola Roadster is a little more, but I am hesitant because of my T-325 reliability issues also, a lot of 1-star reviews...
3. The Jabra Freeway is brand new, but 3 times the price! If the Jabra Freeway drops in price by 60% I would consider it it also has caller-id-NAME-announce, auto on/off, etc. Does not have exactly perfect reviews.
So until the next perfect device comes out with really good reviews, I decided to save money and get the SuperTooth Buddy. In the pursuit of hands-free, it gets the job done, minus some of the nice frills of more expensive units out there.
[Update 9-6-2011]
I have now returned my SuperTooth Buddy for several reasons:
A. The first time I needed to charge it, I charged it for several hours until the "halo" light turned green. The next day I used it fine. The second day, it would not turn on at all. I charged it up again and it seemed to work fine for a few days....
B. With my phone in the cupholder, it did not auto-pair for another 10 minutes, this has now occurred 3 times. Sure, I can turn the unit on/off and or toggle my bluetooth and make it pair, but I shouldn't have to, it should automatically pair when in range. For battery-savings, perhaps *MY* phone defaults to checking every 10 minutes if it doesn't find a device for a long while, or it could be the SuperTooth, who knows, but other devices like the T-325 (and BlueAnt S4 and Jabra Freeway) automatically turns itself off and on, so this was never an issue before.
C. I decided to return it when it wouldn't turn on again 2 more times. The second time it happened, it worked on the way home after a short trip doing errands. The third time, I got a little Sherlock idea, and put the device on the a/c vent to cool it off (even though it was not too hot to touch). After just a couple of minutes, the device then turned on and auto-paired and worked fine since. So my assumption is that if it gets too hot in your car, that the device won't power on. (You can test if it is on by hitting the "Up" volume button, when it reaches max volume level, you should always hear a beep, regardless of being paired. Holding down the power button should also beep on/off, too. In my cases, the device would never turn on or beep, etc.)
Final Parting Summary:
=======================
With the 30-day warranty period almost over, I decided I needed to return it ASAP given the reliability issues I've seen related to Texas Heat so far. Too much finagling involved to make it work; things should just work out of the box. I still think 3-stars is fair because those of you in a much milder climate, might have great luck with this. When it works (and turns on) it is a pretty decent no frills bluetooth speakerphone, especially for the price. Like another review mentions, if you're sitting on your couch one day and go to use your phone and hear nothing, it is probably because the bluetooth is still connected in your car! hehehe. This is probably why the other manufacturers added *motion-sensing* auto on/off...I bought the Supertooth Buddy for my Mother in law, as I needed something easy to set up, and operate without too many bells and whistles, and the Supertooth Buddy is it! Personally I am getting tired of the technical "arms race" with electronic devices. The Buddy does it's job well without having to jump through hoops. I read the manual, explained it to my wife, and she set it up for her Mother, no problems! To me that is the true test, as my wife isn't a gear head. If she can set it up, and my Mother in law can work it, then it passes the test. It is plenty loud enough for conversations, and the magnetic visor clip allows the Buddy to be swapped from one side of the visor to the other in an instant if one needs to change the visor position. A great bluetooth device for those of us who just want something simple that works. It comes with a car charger and USB to Mini USB cable to charge the unit. It does not come with a home charger, though one can use the USB cable to charge it using your USB port on your computer. Standby time is 1000 hours, so the lack of a home charger shouldn't be an issue.

I was fed up using bluetooth headsets with my iPhone. Everytime I seemed to want to use it, they were either not paired properly, battery dead or the person on the other end could not hear me properly.So, I was looking for a hands free car kit. A full integrated one for my Audi A4 was about $400+. Too much.
So after some investigating, I came across this alternative.
What I really like about it, is that it just works. I charged it up using a USB mains adapter, 3 weeks ago, I paired it up with my iPhone (that took about 1 minute) and then clipped it onto my visor. I have not had to charge it since.
Whenever I walk up to the car, it beeps to say that it is speaking with my iPhone. From then on, it just works. Sound is clear in both directions. I just leave my Bluetooth on my iPhone 4 on. I know that when I step into my car, then it will automatically be working.
Want SuperTooth Buddy Bluetooth Visor Speakerphone Car kit-Black Discount?
Was doubtful when I ordered this item as most of the other hands free car kits I have used were more expensive. I was very surprised that this speakerphone is hands down the best I've used so far. It beats my Motorola, Jabra and LG in sound quality (both incoming and outgoing) and is very easy to set up and use. My other speakerphones all died after only a few months in the Texas heat. So far, so good on this model. Not a bunch of extras on this unit, but I really just wanted a hands free that I could understand the conversation clearly and that I didn't sound like I was talking in a coffee can. This is the unit. If you are looking for a good basic hands free speakerphone with excellent sound quality and ease of use, this is it.Sunday, March 9, 2014

Unit worked OK first time out, although it didn't seem to have the volume it should have had for a 4X50 Watt system. Second time out, a very brief rain shower hit and my marine water proof system quit. What little water hit this unit was blown in because the top was up on my pontoon boat. I emailed PYLE about the problem on my one month old system and they have yet to reply.Don't people research this type of stuff before they purchase it? I bought one of these with 4 speakers to use on my fishing boat.
Everything works excellent. Decent enough sound quality. Installation is a breeze. For me the SD card function and AUX port are awesome. Nice bright display. Works for me.
The down side, controls take some getting used to & can be confusing, as in like to many options. The remote control is a line of sight device, meaning you have to have it pointed directly at the radio, but it does work from a distance. After 2 years on a boat I'm surprised the remote hasn't fallen in the lake anyways.
Would I recommend it? Sure, decent price and value. It's a great deal for a boat with an outboard setup because the power consumption is very low. My old radio got pulled out because of it constantly draining the battery down. This one does not. I can listen to for two days while I'm fixing up the boat on the driveway or working in the garage and still not to have to worry if my batteries have enough charge to hit the lake when the phone rings.Put this baby on my fishing boat to while away the hours and I dig itgood sound qualitynice to know it won't get messed up if it gets a little sprayfor the money I think it's all it needs to be. It has a plenty of features. Didn't have to crack open the user guide either.Being that this is a very cost-effective packaged deal I can't say that I'm too disappointed in it's overall delivery. In all I felt that the set up did just as I hoped for in sound quality performance and was, most definitely, a drastic improvement over the previously installed (stock) stereo.
Areas it was lacking were the overall quality cosmetically of the receiver -all plastic parts on receiver that were kinda "cluncky" when pressed. Something annoying: After only having the unit for a month it began to randomly switch back and forth between USB connection and the radio setting -this happened often and usually when it was hot out (it's not too uncommon for stereos to "freak" out when they get hot, it's just annoying!). Also, the grilles began rusting very easily and quickly from when we installed them and we only ventured into fresh water areas.
All in all, a good stereo for the price paid but if they worked out all the little issues it would be a great base stereo.

I purchased the AS-900 to check out in-the-ears for my four-piece contra dance band. This type of music is all instrumental and all acoustic, but the playing environment is extremely loud and extremely reverberant. It frequently is not possible for band members to hear each other or themselves. Floor monitors or hot-spot type monitors often make the on-stage noise level worse.I've used the AS-900 along with a set of the Klipsch image s4 buds for three dances. I'm currently the only person in the band using in-ears. I have not tried the buds supplied with the AS-900. For all three gigs, the transmitter was about twenty feet away. Here are my results:
1. The fixed frequency of the AS-900 has absolutely not been a problem at all. The three gigs were in the Philadelphia suburbs, in northern New Jersey and on Manhattan. I experienced no interference at all, as in none. These are all densely populated areas. If I were going to experience interference from ambient sources, it should have happened by now.
2. The Klipsch IMAGE S4 In-Ear Enhanced Bass Noise-Isolating Headphones (Black) work well and are comfortable.
3. The belt clip for the AS-900 receiver is just a piece of wire, is entirely inadequate and flies off at every opportunity. Very annoying. I've wrapped it with several layers of electrical tape, which seems to hold it on O.K. for now. If the tape does not hold, I'll fabricate a belt clip from sheet brass and hold it on with Velcro. Galaxy should do a better job with this belt clip.
4. The rest of the band complains that they can't communicate with me when I've got the buds in. I'll have to add an ambient mic. Hopefully that won't cancel out all of the noise reduction benefit of the buds.

Update: went back to first headphones tried and started again. It connected this time, so now I can listen to my Kindle with this unit. The other three still will not connect. Sound is very clear and clean.
Update 2: Tried it with two more older headsets and the GOgroove would not pair with them. Got a response from the company but it simply repeats the directions that came with it. I also tried reverse pairing with all the headsets and it did not help.
Update 3: It does pair with bluetooth speakers since it paired with two I had, the easiest was the Creative D90. What I have found in my extensive testing is that it does not pair with anything that normally requires a pairing code, such as cellphone earpieces. It does pair with headsets made for mp3 players and bluetooth speakers, but with some you have to reverse the pairing order.... first on, second on, etc. It should not be advertised as pairing with just about anything.I love this item. I use it to watch Netflix on my Nook so I don't disturb my wife and I don't have to worry about the wires on my other headphones. It pairs with bluetooth headphones easily and work great.It does exactly what I need it to do. Enabled my Motorola S805 Bluetooth D.J. Style Stereo Headset to be paired with my TV, with the help of a connect cable "2 x RCA Male / 1 x 3.5mm Stereo Female, Y-Cable, 6 inch" which is used to convert my TV's audio output to 3.5mm jack.
Pros: tiny in size, extrememly compact and slick. Clear sound, no sensible delay.
Cons: have to do the pairing job each day when i start to watch the TV. Looks it lost pairing info after sleeping.Item advertises "home Theatre" I ordered to use with my Television to Bluetooth Speaker. Often there is a lag that is unacceptable. Second it needs to be repaired to the headphones constantly. I'm returning and buying a more expensive one.I have a bluetooth headphone and a speaker, originally bought for my ipod. Lately I wanted to use them with my TV and Kindle Fire. I found the GOgroove transmitter. Because it was not as expensive as other similar products, I decided to give it a try. And to my surprise, it paired successfully with each on the first try. I couldn't be happier!
Update 12/5/2012: I have to downgrade it to 3 stars. After a couple of months of light use, it suddenly cannot be turned off. It keeps blinking and searching for signals until the battery is depleted.

Exogear Exomount Car Mount Holder For Samsung Galaxy S3 Note N7000 i9220 4G - White
The holder has been well designed with good quality plastics and clean edges. the rubber that grips your phone on the inside is soft and grippy silicon and well not slip. The spring clamp on the phone is another great idea, as it dose not let go. NOT EVEN ON MY ZCAR MINI a track day car with race set up suppension. it will viabrate but nothing bad , its as smooth as silk in my family car. its been so good I have bought one for my track car as well so I do not neen to swap over any more. You can you tube it to see more details now.Buyer Beware. This item is counterfeit. It is NOT a real Exogear Exomount! It is a cheap piece of junk plastic that will barely stick to clean glass let alone a car dashboard. Avoid this seller! I will post pictures of the box, which contains directions in broken english and the actual item, which is lacking both an Exogear logo and Patent number.
FROM THE EXOGEAR WEBSITE:
Notice: Please beware of counterfeit exomounts being sold on other sites. All genuine EXOGEAR exomounts carry the EXOGEAR logo on the product and retail box as well as the US Patent number on the bottom of the exomount.
DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM FROM THIS SELLER!

It holds my S3 securely(The clamps on this mount are strong) and I can angle it just how I want it.Update 10/30/2012 I've had this mount for over a month now and it has never once fell off my dashboard. I tried to pull it up but it's stuck on there really good. My dashboard isn't smooth and it's not really bumpy, just kinda in between, but it's holding good. If you need a mount you can't go wrong with this one!Excellent. It arrived very quickly, faster than several other items I had ordered a couple of weeks before and works exactly as advertised. It sticks to the side panel of my winshield, which is textured and never held anything before. Today I used it riding in the back seat and it held to the plastic part of the back of the driver's seat. Held for hours, no problem at all. Even better, hasn't left any marks.
The plastic could be of a thicker/higher quality, but if you're careful it shouldn't be a problem. Also, the clip design is great. I wasn't sure I'd like it, but it holds things more securely than the old designs and is more universal, easily fitting different sizes. Works perfectly with my Samsung Galaxy 4.2.

It works for pretty much any phone you can stick in it. Good suction cup and anchoring system. Applies enough pressure, but doesn't damage phone. Not as clunky and chunky as other car mounts. Love it!Thursday, August 29, 2013
Coby CA-745 Wireless FM Car Transmitter with Digital Display and DC Car Cigarette Lighter Adapter
- LCD Display with backlight
- Ideal for MP3, CD and MD Playback
- Full range frequency settings
- 3.5mm Stereo Audio Input Jack for most audio devices
- Transmits music wirelessly from audio devices over FM frequency
- Ideal for MP3, CD, and audio playback from other portable devices
- Full-range FM frequency settings
- LCD display with backlight
- 3.5mm stereo plug works with most audio devices
This unit doesn't just look pretty and have nice features, it also performs extremely well. On a 40 minute commute through back roads, highway and city, the unit didn't lose signal once and I heard ZERO interference, yes, that's right, none! Compare that to other reviews.
Downsides? All the downsides are common to most other transmitters: it doesn't have an on/off button, so you have to unplug the unit if you want it to stop drawing power. To get the sound just right, you have to crank the treble on your car stereo a tad (although this just may be a personal preference). And, you have to crank the volume on your mp3 player and/or stereo (and remember to turn the volumes back down when you use your stereo or mp3 player without the transmitter or else risk blowing out your eardrums). There was some static noise when handling the unit initially although I found this went away quickly as the static charge (coming from the user) dispersed.
The sound quality amazes mevery near CD quality soundand I was very pleased there was no interferencein the 40 minutes driving, I never had to switch channels. As long as it holds up, I don't plan on switching transmitters anytime soon either. The Coby-745 rocks.Right off, the price. If I paid double or even triple and it performed as it does, I would have been satisfied. FM transmitters by definition are supposed to be the last resort for sending audio through car speakers from a portable device, given their many potential downfalls. But I've used the Coby CA-745 daily for over two months now and I couldn't be happier. I even made sure to wait this long before posting a review, in case it worked well but broke quickly.
A few major points to consider regarding this model: first, this is not an iPod-charging device. For me, that was OK. Everything I plug my iPod into at home charges it, so I was purposely looking for a transmitter that would fit the iPod's 3.5mm headphone jack.
Second, it allows for selection among the full FM frequency band including the almost-never-taken 87.9. I set it there on Day 1 and never changed it. But it's nice to know that I am not limited to four preset tunings if I need to change it.
Third, it is designed thoughtfully. I didn't want a battery-powered transmitter, but my lighter jack is situated in a recessed part of my lower dashboard, so the tilting display helps. The coiled connection cable keeps things neat, as does the flip-off cover that exposes a piggyback lighter jack, so you can still plug in a cellphone charger or whatever. Funny that you don't see any of these options in the high-priced FM transmitters.
But none of the above would matter if it didn't sound good. I am a critical listener, though aware that I cannot expect my car audio system to sound as good as my home system. Three aspects of this unit's audio quality stand out: its output level strength is terrific, there is actual discernable stereo separation, and no noticeable coloration in frequencies. I tried all the preset EQ settings on my iPod with this and found that it sounded best flat, no EQ at all. To me, that alone spoke volumes about the quality of its transmitted stereo signal.
Background noise is virtually non-existent and I never get those bursts of static anymore. I can make out a very slight constant high-pitched whine, which I know is my car interfering with the signal (having the wipers on causes the whine to modulate some), but note this is just one component of an overall VERY LOW LEVEL background noise floor. Unless you crank it up between songs or during very light musical passages, you're not going to hear any artifacts produced by this unit. And for you purists out there try cranking up your built-in car CD player when a song is paused with factory units especially, you may be surprised by how much low-level garbage is percolating back there that you'd never really notice.
My Ford Taurus was tricky for getting an iPod to play through it. The factory audio system is configured in such a way that adding an audio input would have been expensive and complex to install. The in-dash cassette goes into auto-forward when trying to use a cassette adapter, so I'm really stuck with the FM transmitter method. My antenna is a standard fixed-pole antenna at the back of the car, and the cheap no-name FM transmitter I was using before this could only be placed in certain locations to work at all, and even then produced constant light static that was annoyingly audible, plus regular bursts of loud jarring static. Yet I put up with that for a long time since I knew from researching online that no matter what model or price, there was nothing that was consistently lauded as working great, and every unit seemed to have the ability to work as poorly as the piece of junk I already had.
So again, the price. There are no guarantees, but a lot of people are having good luck with this unit. If your situation is like mine, the price alone should make it worth the gamble.I have gone through four of these types of FM Transmitters. One was powered by the iPod. I don't recommend that type as it sucks your battery dry quickly. The one I am replacing this time worked alright, but was bulky and finally stopped working correctly. I was happy when I plugged this one in and effortlessly synced FM stations and got CD quality sound. Another nice feature is that you don't have to switch it on. When it is plugged in it is live when the radio is tuned to that station and does not affect any other stations if you are listening or scanning other stations. The only thing I wish someone would add is a bit of amplification. Every transmitter I've used requires you to turn your iPod volume up almost all the way and then you still have to turn your stereo volume up much higher than normal. Obviously, if you forget to adjust both volumes down before using either next time, you will blast your eardrums or speakers.I drive for a living, and I love jazz. I also think FM radio is insipid at best, so I've been using wireless transmitters for my CD and now Mp3 player for over 4 yrs. This, so far, is the best. It covers the full FM spectrum, provides power to keep a signal and looks way cool doing it. I always had a low opinion of all things Coby, but they really hit a homerun with this piece of gear. The only question will be, how will it work in 3 or 6 months? If I don't change this review then buy it, by all means. When something works this good for under $20 it's a no-brainer.
Addendum: It's been a couple months now and the unit had been performing very well. Held the signal better than any other wireless FM transmitter I ever tried. Seldom faded and constant strength. But then... just today, I tried using the piggyback adaptor with a 60w converter for a heating pad and it burnt out the Coby. That's why I went into the detailed description: if you use the adaptor let it be for a cellphone or something using less juice. Otherwise it will fry the unit. I ordered another one though as I really enjoyed using itso in the end that's the highest endorsement I can give.When I first bought the CA-745, I thought it was a great buy: it worked well. After about nine days or so, it started making a loud cracking sound (loud static) whenever the end of the stereo connector moved. This quickly became unbearable to me because it happened every time I selected a song or changed the volume, etc. I had to return it for a refund. If Coby can get the wiring quality taken care of, they will have an unbeatable value on the CA-745.
