Optima Batteries 8014-045 D34/78 YellowTop Dual Purpose Battery

This is officially my sixth Optima Yellow Top battery, and the first that has had an issue requiring warranty support. Unfortunately, I was told by Optima that Amazon is not on their authorized retailer list therefore I am unable to take it to a local retailer for warranty support. I also confirmed via my Amazon account that it cannot be returned to Amazon. What to do, what to do. Well, even though it is only 9 months old, I bought a brand new Optima from my local Autozone that I know will be an easy exchange should I ever have an issue again.

Now, on to the battery: These have worked well for me in multiple applications from HD trucks to multi-amp-ed Trans Am's and even an off-road Jeep. I've never had one fail until now but be aware that these are not "plug-and-play" batteries like a wet lead-acid type that most people use and/or grew up with when it comes to charging. I'd suggest visiting Optima's web site and reading the differences between their Red, Yellow and Blue top batteries so you understand their application and the type of care and feeding they require. The Yellow covers both cranking amps for starter motors as well as deep-cycle capacity for applications with a large amperage draw such as amplifiers and accessories like winches and such. I've averaged over 6 years out of each battery until I had this one fail and two were going strong when the vehicles left my possession.

I'm guessing that a number of those who are saying this is a bad battery or doesn't last haven't taken the time to learn about them. They can be drained completely down and yet recover where a standard battery won't. But, and it is a big but, they must be recovered following very specific procedures and no, you can't simply hook up a charger and expect it to recover automatically. Do some research and you'll confirm what I already know, these are not standard batteries and yes, they are better than your standard wet-cell batteries, in my opinion. For me, they've outlasted every other type of battery I've used and are what I buy when the stock battery dies or when I need more power for accessories. Peace.

There's a lot of un-due praise for Optima batteries. I believe their reputation is over deserving. Granted batteries don't last long in Phoenix, I was expecting more than the 2 years I got out of my Yellow Top Optima; their capacity and life is not much different than cheaper quality batteries.

Negs:

The warranty is very poor, nowhere near the level of the competition.

I expected a quality deep cycle AGM to last a lot longer than just over 2 years.

Pros:

Worked well under heavy current loads. I run 5 amplifiers that draw about 80-100 amps. The Optima helped buffer the headlight-dimming effect I used to have w/ my stock battery.

Overall a good battery, but at this heavy price I would expect a battery to have a warranty to back it up past 18 months and to last longer than 2 years. If you're spending this much, check out the Diehard Platinum or others first, you'll be glad you did.

This is a great battery as long as you buy it from an authorized dealer. AMAZON is not and this voids the warranty!!! I have one that went bad just before the 3 year FREE replacement, which is very unusual with Optima batteries. The manufacturer won't honor warranty because Amazon is not an authorized distributor, they show a warranty link (bad advertizing), If you contact Amazon they say it's only good for 30 days. Terrible deal and have found it online for $20 cheaper, free shipping, and warrantied. Very disappointed with Amazon. BEWARE!!!

First of all, I am a dedicated AGM fanatic, and I won't use leaky wet-cell batteries. That said, I'm not sure if Optima is my brand any more. They just don't seem to last very long. This one was in very intermittent use, kept on a trickle charger, and gave up the ghost after 4 years of really light duty. The failure mode was a lost cell cranking voltage dropped to 7V. I'm trying out the Lifeline product line in several places maybe it will be better than Optima's so-so history with me.

3. You can visually inspect a unit for physical damage from mishandling. Missing retaining fingers around the vent covers is a subtle but tell-tale sign that the unit has been mishandled.

Hint: This is a long-lived product -purchase through a store chain (franchise) if you anticipate relocating within three years, and do not lose your receipt.

If you insist on purchasing an Optima battery online, your best bet is to order from Optima itself directly. I was so excited that this battery was available on Amazon for the price. I was replacing the SAME battery that I had which had died after 5 years. So, I found this one and ordered it. Let me tell you what this seller sent. A FAKE PRODUCT!!!!!!!!! I received it in a TacoBell box. Clue number one. Opened the box and found a battery inside a used ziploc bag that was worn. Clue number 2. And finally, the battery was black and had a fake printed label quoting "Krank it Up" and PC 600. I immediately contacted the seller and sent Amazon a scathing email informing them that this seller is selling fake misrepresented products. I put a set of professional 2-gauge, 20 foot long jumper cables in this little bag, and they fit fine. If those will fit, any other cables will too.

The cloth is thick enough to resist snagging and tearing, and has a small outside pocket for something very tiny (the pocket is too little for anything big). Compact, and fits well in the trunk, yet sturdy enough for the weight of the cables. Very good, as long as you aren't planning on putting too much else in there. A set of rubber gloves, wipes, and small flashlight might fit, but nothing big.

I purchased this product with the intention of using it for charging my laptop while on the road. According to the product's spec sheet, it is rated to supply 140-watts of continuous power (and 150-watts peak) and it is marketed as being a suitable power supply for laptops. Unfortunately, when I plugged my laptop (which uses a 90-watt charger) in to the unit it would overload and trip the surge protection after a few seconds. I was thoroughly unamused.

Additionally, I found this nugget from a review on Newegg:

"The problem with this unit is that neither the hot or the neutral plug on the unit are referenced to ground. In other words, the neutral actually has a potential of 60v above ground. This can lead to some shocking situations. The ground leg of the inverter is just a dummy hole -there is no actual ground.

In layman's terms, the electrical design of this unit is very poor and would never achieve household electrical standards. I can't figure out how they are allowed to manufacture and sell this unit especially when they advertise it for use with laptops."

And upon further inspection, I can confirm that this is accurate, which could possibly be the reason why my laptop charger overloads the unit despite the fact that the unit is supposed to be able to supply 140-watts continuously.

This unit does seem to work well for small electronic devices, but I cannot recommend this unit for any electrical device that draws much power or uses a 3-prong connector.

This item came in very handy after we experienced a hurricane. Power was out for a couple days and this little thing charged everything. Laptops, phones, PSP, I worked my juice blender from my car!

plus, there is also a fan inside that keeps the plugs cool to the touch. A bit noisy because of the fan, but the power and convenience far outweighs that.

I bought mine in a retail store back in 2008 (for over $30), and love it. Never had a problem with it not handling the load of my laptop and other devices in my car, and for long periods of time. However, yes, it is noisy.

Wanting to get another one, I've had this in my cart for a while, watching the price go down and up and down again, and today discovered that some peeps have had problems with it not being grounded and tripping off. I suspect there was a stretch of poorly assembled units, but if this issue is resolved by the manufacturer, I can attest that this is a pretty nifty device to keep in your car for all kinds of needs and particularly emergencies, such as if your mobile phone dies and you're a long way from home--you can keep a car charger in your car for your mobile, sure. I bought this dock/holder to replace one used for an iPhone 4 that was not compatible with an iPhone 5. So far the dock has worked just fine. It holds the phone in a stable position and has never rotated in the power outlet. It is a bother to have to attach two cables (power and audio) when using the phone but that can be blamed on Apple for changing the power connector.

I use this to hold my IPhone5. It fits! The slide adjustment is easy to work. The holder is strong and does not make me feel like my phone is going to be tossed around on a bumpy road. I have not used the power aspect of the unit, so I cannot rate its ability to re-charge the phone. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a good car phone holder.

I've purchased a variety of so-called "dash cams" in the last few months...the last two have fallen short of expectations (ie: short recording times, poor video quality, etc.) One dash cam I have tends to record video for random intervals, despite setting the camera to record in, say, 15 minute increments. I'm lucky if I can get it to record for longer than one minute, or 30 seconds, or two minutes...you get my drift.

This dash cam goes above & beyond my expectations. I recently tested this a few nights ago, and while it lacks night vision recording (the most likely culprit being the hardware itself not having low-light capability), it more than makes up for that with the superb picture quality, and the continuous recording settings. I tried this with loop recording turned OFF...and as long as the battery would hold up, I believe it would continue recording (although a cigarette lighter adapter would provide a steady power feed). My test video was about 10 minutes long of uninterrupted video. My next test will be a 2-hour drive to the nearest large city (Spokane, WA), and with a 32GB TF card holding nearly four hours of high-quality video, we'll see if it will provide a continuous 2-hour recording.

I just got my k6000 a couple of days ago. I spent weeks looking for a good car dvr. This one seemed to be the only one with no bad reviews, now I see why. The video quality is great, the camera is easy to set up and it has no problem with my 32gb class ten micro card. The only drawback would be no night vision. The camera does have two led lights to help see at night, though they just reflect off the windshield. This is easily fixed by turning on your headlights, the camera's image quality makes up for no night vision. In all though I am absolutly impressed with this camera.

This dashcam does a great job, easy to play back on your computer or TV. Very good video quality, okay audio quality... Small foot print on your windshield, the camera turns off and on automatically, records over old footage. The user's guide is weak, but if you can push a few buttons you can figure it out. My Odyssey has died after 1 year and 5 months. It will not take a charge. So, no problem right? After all it has a two year non-prorata warranty. Wrong. This is a materials and workmanship warranty. Basically, if it doesn't fall apart, it isn't covered. The manufacturer goes to great lengths to explain why the battery may have a shorter useful life, and thens says that if that life is less than 2 years you are on your own. The fine print is a deliberate attempt to sell batteries claiming a 2 year warranty without actually offering anything near a two year warranty. If you read the fine print carefully, you could easily decide that there is effectively no warranty. They can always claim the battery came to the end of its life.

I replaced it with this battery and it will go 10 days with no trickle charge and still starts my bike with no problem.Had to shim under the battery a bit to get the bracket tight but other than that it was a direct replacement. 11/22/2012 Battery was great while it lasted. Bought battery about 13 months ago, go out to get on it to ride to families for Thanksgiving to find it dead. Figure okay throw it on Trickle Charger and get going in an hour. No go. Leave it charge over night nothing. Come back to Amazon and see someone posting a simular issue of the battery dying just over a year and unable to get any warranty support from seller. Still searching for a replacement battery for my BMW, don't want to buy another that will have to be replaced every 12 months.

Roadpro 7 Liter 12V Cooler / Warmer with Cup Holders

From a starting ambient temp. of 75 degrees it heated up to 110 in 10 minutes and cooled down to 50 degrees in 20 minutes from that 110. Not sure what others expect but this seems quite satisfactory to me. It is built real sturdy with a nice carrying strap and the lid locks open for convenience. Obviously the cup holders are convenient while the power cord stores under these cup holders if so desired.

Keep in mind this unit is NOT a refrigerator or an oven as some reviewers have expected it to be. Pre chill or heat the items and this unit works marvelously all day long.

I also like the fact it only uses 2-3 amps since I plan and using it at times with a remote 12 amp hr. DC power source. This easily gives me a full 3 hours plus of heating or cooling without recharging. I also like that it's 8 1/2 inches tall on the inside for the taller bottles. This also works out great for the primary reason I bought this unit, to heat/cool 20 oz. CO2 tanks for my air rifles/pistols.

I haven't researched all the units or compared all the features but for $40 this Roadpro 7 liter cooler/warmer definitely is a good value regardless. I liked mine so much I purchased another one.

We are very pleased with both Roadpro and their cooler. However, our experience did not start out so well. We received the Roadpro 12V cooler for Christmas 2009, and were so busy we did not have a chance to try it out until after Amazon's 30-day return policy had expired. The first unit we received did not cool at all. We contacted Roadpro through their website, and were pleased with their reply and instructions on how to return the bad unit for a replacement. We did so, Roadpro followed through with a new unit, and it works great. We keep it powered through a "Koolatron Battery Saver" in the car, which prevents the car battery from running down overnight. We also keep a blue cool-pack in the cooler, too help keep it cool when the battery saver turns off the power.

The unit holds a 6-pack of canned soda, or any equivalent amount of drinks or food. We recommend the Roadpro company, the Roadpro 12V Cooler, and the Koolatron Battery Saver.

Well, I ordered this for a long road trip we've just returned from and have to say I'm definitely disappointed. While it works, as in turns on and off, it doesn't actually "work," as in keeping beverages all that cool. Is it cooler than, say, the ambient temperature of your car? Definitely. Is it as cool as a cooler? Not even close.

The unit's power connection also seems to loosen frequently with the jiggling motion inherent in a moving car, so that's another downer. Fortunately (????), it's quite loud (fan), so you can tell when it's jiggled itself loose, again, and fix it quickly. I will also note the cup holders on the top are NOT as pictured here, but are instead shallow slots on the top of the unit that are almost too small for a can of soda. At any rate, you wouldn't put a full can in as you have to wiggle the can to get it out and, therefore, spill it all over; which we did, several times. (Also, in case you're wondering, the cup holders are not cooling/heating.)

To sum up, if you put cold from the fridge cans in this unit, they'll say moderately cool as long as the unit is on, but not as cold as they were when you put them in. But this unit will NOT cool warm soda, even after it's been in there for hours, and the top layer of cans (they have to stack on top of each other to fit in 12) doesn't get any cooling at all, necessitating a constant shifting of drinks in order to use it. If you're trying to put in odd-size bottles or anything else ... Well, good luck with that.

We never tried the "keep warm" function but, all in all, I'm sorry I wasted my money and will stick with my $5 cooler and an ice pack from now on.

I'm an over the road truck driver and I run this cooler 24/7 weeks at a time and it has been working as described. While it's not a refrigerator, it does cool enough to keep my milk, butter, and mayonnaise from spoiling. Also plan ahead when putting items in it, because it can cool a room temp drink but will take about 5 hours.

UPDATE 2/17/13 Broke after 3 months of use, Fan would come on with green light but just stopped cooling. So exchanged it and then after 2 months the replacement also broke. Same issue fan comes on everything sounds and appears working but just never gets cools. Ended up buying a 44Q Coleman 12v Cooler (ac cord also included)with 2 year extended warranty for $97 out the door at Walmart.

This is a very nice cooler and keeps foods and drinks cold for a long time.

I purchased this for my grandson who is a truck driver. The other coolers

he purchased did not retain the cool temperatures for the long time he required.

The only thing that would make it better is that it could be a little larger.

The voltage transformer is heavy, sturdy and reliable. I am in Switzerland now, and I bought these for barrage of devices brought from the U.S; I plugged in a humidifier, a blender, Vonage phone, laptop, shaver (all at once), and so far no issues whatsoever.

The only catch is the wall converter from US to Euro (so that you can plug the thing into the wall jack) It is too wide for Switzerland (would work in e.g. Germany). So I had to spend a couple of euros for a converter in a local store. Other than that, no issues in the first 45 days....

Got this so I could hook up my 110v 52" LCD HDTV and LG blu-ray player here in Europe. I plugged in a power strip to the 110v outlet, and it powers both items without a hitch. Also extremely quiet. If the entire house is silent you can hear the slightest low hum but as soon as the tv comes on then it's undetectable. Very happy with this purchase and may buy another.

I moved from Germany to USA so I have a few 230V devices to run on 110V.

This converter works absolutely inconspicious.

You just turn it on, plug a german device in and it just works. No noise no hum at all.

This company back their products 100%. I had a problem with the USB power port and I mentioned it in a comment. The company reached out to me via phone and email and insisted they rectify the problem in any way I wanted. Refund or replace. I have no real use for the USB part of the transformer so elected not to have the unit replaced. Otherwise the unit works perfect. I would definitely buy from this company in the future. Excellent Customer Service!!!

I bought two cheaper converters before this one. None of them survived after 3 months. I have used this one for over a year. No problem at all so far. It is little heavy but compact in size. I used a power strip connected to this converter and have several appliance plugged in this power stip. The total power is close to 800 watts. The unit works perfectly.

I bought this universal charger after returning a different charger that didn't fit my TomTom Via. The universal charger works very well and the convenience of being able to charge the GPS device at home and set up a route before departure is really nice, especially if the trip isn't very long. Also, on a longer trip it could charge the TomTom in a motel room for the next leg of the journey. The charger came with a small additional USB connection which I don't need for the TomTom Via, but it might fit another device, like a phone. It seems sturdy, not too big to be stowed with the TomTom in a larger carry case.
