Nextbase CLICK9 9" Tablet Style DVD Player with Stanchion Mount, ALL-REGION, 100v - 240v, Play ANYW

Nextbase CLICK9 9' Tablet Style DVD Player with Stanchion Mount, ALL-REGION, 100v - 240v, Play ANYWHERE, Car Kits Included
  • Includes Stanchion Mount, proven to be the safest for in-car entertainment
  • Also includes Headrest Mount: one-click action to mount player on headrest
  • 9" 16:9 digital TFT with high resolution 800 x 480
  • Portable DVD player with top-load multi-region DVD player
  • Works with CLICK battery (sold separately)

I won't spend time praising the child-pacifying benefits of a car DVD system. That said, this piece does the job, accepting multiple formats and with good ease to set up. However, to pick on the absolute best (and what took me to choose this over other multiple options out there), I will say the stanchion mount lets me sleep in peace knowing if anything ever happened (aka car accident), the DVD will not end up as a projectile hitting someone in the car. Just look at these guys' crash test videos and that will give you some reassurance. The construction at first looke a little cheap on the outside, as it is to a great extent made of plastic (not metal), on the outside. However, to that same point, it looks quite durable and sturdy and "child proof" and although I am not willing to test this and would not recommend you do, I would expect it could take a few more hits than other competitor brands without any major damage. The connectivity for powersource is easy as the cigarette lighter cable goes straight to the mount, and you can just remove the player when you get out of the car (you don't have to spend time winding and unwinding cables every time). The screen has control buttons on the top (apart from a comprehensive remote conrtol), so controlling the unit from the front seat takes some time, but the LED screen does show an on-screen display mimmicking the buttons on top of the unit, so with just looking at the screen you can know where to find the buttons and what you are pressing. All in all, I think this is a great product and I would buy again. My only issue was that my Toyota Sienna had headrest stands which apparently were thiker than anticipated by the vendor, who supplied 16mm bolts (I think the size was M4 0.7 x 16) for securing the stanchion mount. The bolts were hence not long enough and the vendor gladly accepted to send longer ones, although what I got was a regular flat screw and not allen.. I do recognize the 20mm allen bolt wasn't available at the Depot, but I did find some on Amazon at a reasonable price. In any case, the bottom line is "first hand" the screws might end up a few millimiters too short and you might have to request from the vendor (or purchase) a pair of longer bolts. Again: I would not disrecommend the product just because of that (hence the 5 stars).

I own the 10' dual. The system works great. It is what I have been looking for. It is worth the money. I love the mounting brackets. You can take the dvds in and out with ease. You don't ever have to mesh with the cables or trying to remount them. Easy to use, my 5 yr old can work the remote control. I bought a seprate set of brackets and yo-yo cable so now we just unclick the dvds and easliy click them into the other car. They are ready to go. They can watch their own show or the same. you can even unclick one and bring it in the house, they have a built in battery and a DC plug. I love them and I would tell a friend.

**THIS IS A WARNING TO ANYONE IN AUSTRALIA OR THE WORLD CONSIDERING TO BUY NEXTBASE PRODUCTS DO NOT BUY OR WASTE YOUR MONEY**

I purchased the Nextbase Click9 Duo Deluxe Dual 9' Screen Portable DVD players in June 2011 from Nextbase USA. I bought this product hoping the ancap safety meant this product has been built like no other system and that i would be able to enjoy years of quality use. Nextbase even had on there website that they believe every customer is a customer for life. Boy did i get sucked in. They are very helpful and respond quickly to any sales enquiry but thats where it ends. I am really surprised Ford US has Nextbase a supplier.

[Product Fault]

DVD frequently stops and keeps going back to the screen saver screen (Nextbase) then starts up again and then a couple of seconds later it does the same thing and especially if the road is a little bumpy and will also do if on a smooth road as well.

[When Product Fault first occurred]

Approximately April/May 2012 (10/11 months old within 12 month warranty period).

Originally thought it may have been a dirty or scratched DVD.

We don't use the DVD players every time we drive so it had been a few weeks between each time we used it and to try and trouble shoot the issue ourselves.

I first emailed Nextbase 17th July 2012 (Just after the 12 month warranty). At the time of my first point of contact with Nextbase via email, my Brother in Law (29 years old) had just passed away and as a result my email was a short overview of the issue and later realized I didn't detail the trouble shooting period. After several emails from me, Nextbase eventually did send out new Stanchion Mounts hoping this would resolve the issue. After 5 months of originally notifying Nextbase of the issue and waiting weeks/months for them to respond, on 29th November 2012 (5 months after advising the issue), I was finally requested by Nexbase to send the items back for full replacement (At no time has Nextbase indicated that it was not covered under warranty nor that I would incur any cost for the replacement or shipping). The cost to ship from Australia to Nextbase in the USA was $126 AU and Nextbase received the items on 13th December 2012.

Due to the continued lack of communication/nil follow up by Nextbase, I emailed a request for my complaint to elevated to a manager/director of Nextbase. On 27th December 2012 the Sales Manager from Nextbase emailed to advise that he has reviewed my complaint and that they have repaired the DVD player and have decided they will not replace the items or reimburse the cost of shipping or accept this under warranty and that it will cost me $60 US for the items to be shipped back to Australia.

On 28th December 2012 I have since emailed Nexbase disputing their decision to not cover under warranty and it is now the 1st February 2013 and i still have no response or resolution. 6 MONTHS WITHOUT ANY USE OF THE DVD PLAYER OR RESOLUTION IS APPALLING.

There is no after sales service and from my experience Nextbase is the most unreliable and dishonest company i have ever dealt with. Its a real shame as i really thought i was paying for a quality product backed by quality service

I hope this review saves you the pain i have and am currently experiencing.

i.Sound 2-in-1 Charger and Back Up Battery for iPod Touch and iPhone (Black)

i.Sound 2-in-1 Charger and Back Up Battery for iPod Touch and iPhone
  • Includes: Back Up Battery, USB AC adapter, Retractable USB charging cable
  • Up to 30 hours of additional music, 6 hours of video, 3 hours of talk time
  • USB charging cable can charge iPhone/iPod and battery pack simultaneously
  • Compatible with all iPod models with a 30 pin connector
  • Works with iPhone and iPhone 3G

I was looking for a solution to address the less than lengthy battery life of my 3G. My fear of running out of battery juice and being left with nothing but a high tech coaster led me to the i.Sound. This charger/battery works perfectly. You just snap it on and it recharges the iphone battery. It's compact size makes it easy to carry around and the retractable USB charging cable plugs into your laptop or to an included plug charger. You can use your iphone while it is being charged. Compact, convenient, and works. Need I say more.

I"ve had a couple of these for over 7 months & came back to write this review because I've been so pleased. It's small, very light weight for a battery & best of all it charges the phone, so you don't have to have it attached all the time... once the charge goes from the battery to the phone, just disconnect it & your back to a fully charged phone.

I travel in exotic places that may or may not have access to power for a few days... with these little puppies I can charge my phone fully overnight without a power outlet anywhere near. (No it doesn't take overnight to charge the phone -it's actually very quick to transfer the power -but it's handy to do overnight just like an outlet if you don't have power available.)

You can also use it as a power adapter to charge the iphone -just put the battery on the phone, plug it in & it charges both the phone & the battery. Handy to not have to carry a separate charger.

It's also got prongs that fold in and a very spiffy reel on the cord of the charger. These things matter when you're traveling.

Some reviewers mention that it doesn't work with older iPhone... well, no, it doesn't & that's pretty clearly stated above. Hardly a reason to give a bad review -it's like complaining that your car doesn't fly very well.

I'm not sure what happened with the previous review there, but I have had mine working as an aux battery with a 4000 watt system for over a year now without any problems. It runs ALL of my accessories and I have an isolator between it and my stock battery so even when I run my accessories at a car show for too long and kill the Kinetik my main battery will still start the car. I have run this Kinetik down so many times I can't count but she's still running strong. I even have been able to "jump" myself when my stock battery finally took a dump last week. So, I am about to purchase a 2000 watt Kinetik to run my system and accessories and replace my stock battery with this one. Great battery!

A few people told me to get this to help with the dimming of my headlights. They said it would work great so I looked up reviews on it, they were all good almost to good to be true so I bought it. When I got it I tested it and it was charged enough to use, so I wired it up exactly like the booklet said and it was fine. It has worked great for a month untill today driving home from work the battery terminal melted right out of the battery. I couldn't believe it 200 bucks gone. I stayed within the wattage that kinetik suggests and I also hooked it up the way they suggest so the only conclusion I can come to is this thing is crap save your money.

2.5-inch 1080p Hd Wide-angle Hdmi Interface Vehicle DVR Road Dash Video Camera Traffic Recorder (F9

2.5-inch 1080p Hd Wide-angle Hdmi Interface Vehicle DVR Road Dash Video Camera Traffic Recorder Us PlugGave this dash camera as a gift. While the camera works on it's internal battery it does not seem to save any data or provide any loop. Error screen indicates an SD card is needed. Giftee says instructions only mention to use an SD card but when he plugged one in the camera did not work. Russian made camera looks good quality wise, and picture is good on the self contained viewer, but I'm waiting to see if it works and records video as intended. An SDHC card is required for operation it should be noted and 32Gb gives many hours of up to ten minute files. I hope to report more as new info arrives.

Update for those interested 1/8/2013:

After fooling with the camera several hours, it is finally working fine. It is going to be a great camera for its intended purpose. Some suggestions to try:

I found the AC adapter will not power the camera (at least with a weak battery). So I used the included 12V cord to run the camera. The failure of the AC adapter to power the camera was a major source of confusion when figuring out the camera settings.

Use an SDHC card. Even tho the instructions say use SDHC I tried a small memory space standard SD card and it recorded but didn't have enough space to really tell if it was usable. You might get lucky if you have a standard card and it works.

I bought a 32 Gb SDHC card and it records many hours. After trying various setups I found the camera would only LOOP RECORD in bursts of maybe 4 seconds to a minute with giant gaps of time. I solved this by finding the FORMAT icon in system setup. This probably not only clears the SD card but also reformats and resets the camera.

Another item I'm not sure about is the MOTION DETECTION function. I am wondering if it resets the LOOP TIMER everytime it sees motion and this is the reason the camera settles into a short burst mode? Turning off the MOTION DETECT and then formatting I finally got everything working fine! I raised the rating to average because the camera works real good once one takes the time to figure out the functions but the instruction manual leaves much to be desired!

There is a little black reset button on the bottom of the camera. It seems only to unlock any screen freeze that might occur so that the camera can be turned off.

WHEW

not good. cheapo, most likely used, didnt hold charge, and screen tweaked out when i plugged charger in. come with all the cords and mount, cheap plastic/matierals.

Buy 2.5-inch 1080p Hd Wide-angle Hdmi Interface Vehicle DVR Road Dash Video Camera Traffic Recorder (F9 Now

This video camera comes with a simple manual which is written in many languages. But once unit is turned on and seems to work there is no further help either online or someone to contact. I can only record 4 to 9 seconds at a time. Can not figure out how to record in a longer time segment. Saving a segment for delete or save is easy. If there was someone to contact about this camera this would greatly increase the products rating.

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod Solar Charger

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod Solar Charger
  • 6-watt solar panel charger designed for iPods and other electronics
  • Foldable CIGS solar panel with direct-connect iPod power cable
  • Vehicle outlet cable plugs into car's 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter
  • Links with other panels for increased power output; handy storage sack
  • Measures 29 by 9 inches and weighs 7.1 ounces; one-year warranty

First off, I live in Sacramento, CA. So it's not the sunniest location, but still pretty dang sunny.

I purchased the Solaris i6 with the intention to be able to charge any of the following: Ipod Video, Ipod Shuffle, Treo Smartphone, Garmin GPS, Bluetooth headset, & AA or AAA batteries. Usage would be mainly around the house, but I am an outdoor enthusiast that would disappear into backcountry whenever possible taking my trusty Ipod as my only real tie to civilization. Therefore, portability, simplicity & durability would be paramount for my outings.

At first tests, the Solaris was TECHNICALLY capable of charging everything EXCEPT the Ipod Video. The shuffle, phone, GPS & Bluetooth were fabulous no problems there. The AA & AAA batteries were close to impossible. Majority of chargers out there are just not able to work with the current that's created from these panels. I did find a charger that could, however the limit was a single battery at a time! If 2 batteries were placed in the charger, the lights would flicker a little -but charge. The SECOND a cloud, haze, or anything (possibly even a ladybug!) passed over the sun, the threshold was broken & the battery charger would flash "error." Unfortunately, the charger would either sit there flashing error (& no longer charging) until I came back later thinking my batteries are charged, or I would have to reset the charger by either removing the batteries & re-inserting (or unplugging & re-plugging the charger to the solar panels). So... technically, there probably is a charger out there that can work off of the current that the i6 produces, but in my experience -I'm as close to finding that charger as I am to finding a cure for Mad Cow Disease. So, expect the stated "3-4 hrs to charge 4 AA batteries" to actually read, "3-4 hrs PER AA battery." As for the Ipod... IMPOSSIBLE as well using the provided Ipod cable. I figured I had a defective Ipod cable -as the terminal contacts were too small for me to test with my voltage meter. Concluding so, I exchanged the Solaris for another one hoping that the Ipod issue would be resolved. Well, the problem was not resolved.

I can only conclude 1 of 2 conclusions, either: 1) I have terrible luck, & got 2 units with defective cables, or 2) the i6 is not capable of creating enough juice to charge the Ipod Video (at least in my 95 degrees, full-sun early September conditions here in Northern CA). I'm assuming scenario #2. That said, I think it's terrible to tout a product specifically for the Ipod -yet it can't deliver. As a manufacturer, I'd have tested the product against available generations of Ipods that use the connection that you are providing. There is no disclaimer (except that the lighting conditions may vary from our test type deal, etc.), so it really is disappointing. If you have a USB car adapter however, you can use this with the normal Ipod USB cable & the Brunton provided Female Cig adapter. This WILL charge the Ipod -but you now have to use 3 items vs. the 1 Brunton Ipod cable. For some this may be insignificant, but for me -this feels a little jacked-up when you consider the Ipod cable is about $10... which means some of my purchase price is completely wasted. Not to mention the fact that I now have to carry more bulk when outdoors.

So bottom-line, this product is capable of charging an Ipod -as well as a good majority of SMALL electronics. UN-intentional deception aside, I like the Solaris for what it is capable of delivering in such a portable package. I will however grade them hard, as I believe in delivering on a promise or claim.

On a side note, I am impressed with the Solaris line to the point that I am currently contemplating purchasing the 26 as well for larger electronics (digital SLR batteries & portable DVD players), for longer comfortable basecamps away from power.

One last point to consider... if you are purchasing these units SOLELY for emergency power (cell phones), you might want to consider the 12 or 26 watt Solaris instead. The 6 watts work beautifully under sunny conditions, & at about 25%-50% under light to moderate overcast conditions (but still enough to activate my phone charger). I would doubt though that enough current would be produced under heavier overcast (conditions typically associated with emergency situations) to initiate charging for most cell phones. For those of you thinking, "it's for situations like car trouble on a sunny day (not natural disasters)," let's face it, why would you need something as expensive as solar?... why not go with something like an extra battery... easier & cheaper to buy & carry. With a larger Solaris, there is a greater chance that the panels will collect enough energy to trigger your chargers, as a 10-15% output from the 26 would be most likely enough to activate charging. Just something to think about...

Buy Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod Solar Charger Now

I really thought that this was exactly what I have been looking for...but it is not. If you are looking for a solar energy source for charging your iPod or newer cellular phone, look somewhere else. I own several Brunton products, and I've never had a problem with them before. Even though the specifications listed claim to be able to charge an iPod, it actually takes TWO or even THREE of these very expensive panels linked together to charge an iPod touch or iPhone. It took two Brunton i6 panels linked together to charge an iPod 3G nano, 80GB video iPod, and my Samsung Instinct even in direct sunlight. Although this item even lists "iPod" specifically in its name, I would have to recommend the Brunton 12-watt or even 26-watt solar panels to do the job. The i6 *may* have enough power to charge some of the much older iPods, such as the 1G and 2G nano, but I do not have any old iPods to test.

I use this to charge my iPhone. It works. It won't charge the battery while the phone is on but it seems maintain the level. I don't see this as an issue because I use this where there is no cell service, and no power I'm just using the phone as an iPod at this point. The sun is bright where I am in the west. Mine came without the storage sack and I emailed Brunton. They got back to me quickly and mailed me one. I give it four stars as the instruction book doesn't mention it working with an iPhone I just had to take a chance.

It does come with an array of cables: cigarette lighter socket, battery clamps, and various barrel connectors for charging other stuff. I haven't tried any of that at this point.

Also note that charging electronics in the hot sun is always tricky. One needs to shade or protect the device somehow so it doesn't get overheated while keeping the panel in the bright sunlight.

Want Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod Solar Charger Discount?

I bought this solar charger in the hopes that it would charge other usb devices in addition to my iPod. It doesn't charge the most important one, a Garmin Edge 305 cycling computer. In fact, it drains the battery rather than charging it. Further, Brunton's customer support on this issue was poor. The charger works fine with my 4th-generation iPod, but I'd rather not carry a separate charging system for every device, so I'm now looking for a better option for solar charging.

12 volt 18 Ah Rechargeable Battery

12 volt 18 Ah Rechargeable BatteryI bought this battery to use with my solar collector system. It arrived fast. It was one of the best priced batteries I found. My solar collector charges it all day and it keeps my water pumps and lights running all night, I was even able to lay it on it's side. I think I'm going to buy a few more.

Recently decked out a power-wheels as a birthday gift.

Final product had a 300watt stereo system, with an ipod dock, real headlights, and neon ground effects.

And even with all that action, this battery still outlasts an un-modified power-wheels.

(I wonder how long it would last with no stereo, and lights?)

Alternate charger required.

I used (Battery Tender 021-0123 Battery Tender Junior 12V Battery Charger)

The standard power-wheels charger will ruin this battery.

didnt really know just how much the different battery ratings would affect my project. i hoped it would power a 200w space heater to thaw my windshield before i got to my car with a power inverter and a christmas tree timer. but its just a little bit more than this battery can keep up with (it will last about 3 min before my power inverter kicks off because the voltage gets bellow 10.5v) im thinking about getting another one because it will run and charge my laptop for a few solid hours (its a beast for gaming not portability) im probably going to buy another to meet my needs. oh yeah, i dont have to worry about it falling over ether, it never leaks.

The battery was shipped with new lug screws, it was 'fully-charged', and the identical size and configuration as the battery it replaced. My stand-alone battery jump starter / air pump kit now functions as when it was new. The old battery lost its ability to hold the full-charge needed for the 'jump-start' function. I was worried that the old battery would not be the problem, but it was solved with the replacement battery.

RoadPro RP73002 10" 12V or Battery Dual Power Portable Fan

RoadPro RP73002 10' 12V or Battery Dual Power Portable Fani dont know how anyone could say this fan hardly puts out any breeze ... using 12 volts it will blow the plant leaves on an indoor plan of mine 6 feet away ON LOW ... it blows them a lot on high. Maybe the other folks reporting LOW BREEZE tried D batteries ... or maybe DEAD batteries ... i would not wast money using D batteries anyway ...

The picture Amazon shows is not accurate. The fan does not have the "legs" on the bottom extending toward the rear and the controls are on the side, not the front. The picture is close otherwise. I've read earlier reviews claiming the fan did not put out much of a "breeze". Mine puts out a nice breeze, esp. in the high output setting. I have not tried it with 8 D cell batteries, but it works fine with a power adapter hooked into a 110V outlet. Without the "legs", it's not very stable and seems to be designed to hang from it's handle.

Just got this fan hoping to use it at dog shows to keep my dogs cool. When plugged into the car cigarette lighter and turned to the high setting, it barely moves air 4" from the fan. i placed it against the side of the soft-sided dog crate and it was not powerful enough to cool the inside of the crate. Would not recommend this fan if you are trying to cool anything!

You know, there are some really bitchy people in this world. Seriously, you cannot please them no matter what. There were several very negative reviews about this fan and I just don't get them. This is a very compact fan that moves a lot of air. Yeah, it does not match the picture exactly, but without the feet shown, it takes up even less space but still is plenty stable. I use it via the cigarette plug in my travel trailer and have absolutely no complaints about the unit.

Great fan for the price. I tested the amp usage and it is at .53 amps at hi speed and .35 amps at low speed. I am going to use this to make a solar powered swamp cooler. Provides a good air flow as well. But is is slightly noisy for my liking.

Schumacher SC-8020A SpeedCharge Automatic Battery Charger

Schumacher SC-8020A SpeedCharge Automatic Battery ChargerI ordered this battery charger to replace a Die Hard that died. We commonly have to either keep vehicles that are sitting for months at a time on a trickle charge or sometimes jump a vehicle with a dead battery.

This charger does great with everything we hook it to. Some of the settings and displayed feel a little too dumbed-down for my taste.

The main feature that would make this charger a lot better for my use would be charging a battery that is completely dead. Right now, if we want to use this charger on a dead battery, we have to hook a charged battery up to the dead one so that the charger will realized it is hooked up. Once the charger starts the charging cycle, we can unhook the good battery.

Edited....After several months, I have had problems charging some Optima batteries. At times it will stop charging after an hour or so and just blink.

First of all, it works. I've used it to bring one dead battery back to life and right now I'm staying up late baby sitting another dead battery that's connected to this thing.

My problems with this product have to do with useability.

First, the instructions are scatterbrained. The essentialy information you need to use the device is all over the place. I really would have appreciated a single sequential set of instructions followed by the troubleshooting guide. And, the instructions don't seem to tell everything. I had this thing display "OL" in the LED which I assume was "overload", but the little instruction sheet said nothing about this error code.

Second, and much more infuriating, is that the controls are labelled with a font and color combination that is just about unreadable even up close with my reading glasses on and a flashlight on the controls. No, my eyesight isn't that bad! It takes a very special talent to create a product that comes with all kinds of safety warnings, and really looks like you could blow some thing up if you used it wrong, and then makes the control labels almost unreadable. Nice going there people!

I have used this for over a year and it works like a charm. It is a little noisy but not bad. I use mine in the garage, so it's not like I'm in there most of the time to hear it. It has worked perfect for about a year now. I love it and am glad I got it!!!

Want Schumacher SC-8020A SpeedCharge Automatic Battery Charger Discount?

I bought this one believing some engineering and quality stays behind the company. Unfortunately it was not the case.

CONS:

1. It has awful design. It is impossible to read button labels thanks to the red background and crappy small font.

2. Voltage readings are not accurate. It lowers the voltage up to 0.8V compared to my calibrated voltmeter. I dont believe it is due to averaging.

3. It could be dangerous to car and battery. As many people noticed about Schumacher's "smart" chargers they tend to elevate charging voltage up to 16-17 V. In my case voltage quickly jumped to 16.5V at 13A and was staying to the end of charging on BMW X3 with AGM 90Ah battery. No, it was not dedicated "desulfation" mode, just a regular charging of slightly depleted 2-years old battery. Yes, before charging I made sure the car went to sleep with no loads on the battery because it can make electronics crazy. I contacted their support and they told me that "Most of our microprocessor controlled units can have a charging voltage as high as 15.4 volts while charging in AGM mode, which has been determined to be safe for most AGM batteries. In your case, you could try setting the unit to the Gel setting, which should have a maximum charging voltage of 14.7 volts". Seems to be glitchy firmware/design/electronics.

4. Very loud fan.

5. Not the best clamps and wires.

PROS:

1. Heavy and durable.

2. Works good on BMW 335i with conventional lead-acid battery. No high voltage issues.

Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner Metal

Battery Post and Terminal Cleaner MetalBought this to clean my top post battery the cap that hides the brush is not made correctly and you have to fight with it to get it to go back on. I expect this to last maybe one more battery cleaning before falling apart. The brushes that clean the post are already coming out from one cleaning of the top posts.

NOT MADE IN THE USA you get one guess where.....will look for a good quality made in the USA one next time.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS AT ALL...SAVE YOUR MONEY.

One star because it was delivered quickly.....

Male brush under cap does not turn in the battery cable terminal when I twist the housing. Female brush scrubs the battery terminal post OK.

  • Fuel Prices - Find the lowest gas by location and price
  • TomTom Roadside Assistance - Reliable roadside assistance you can trust 24/7

  • Maps of US and Canada

I have just returned from a trip of 1500 miles roundtrip, and for 3 of the 4 days I used Tom Tom it was absolutely great! I love it! Here is the warning: on the last leg of my return trip today, the unit would/could not find GPS satellites! I tried everything, but no luck. Fortunately I knew the route to take on this leg of my journey, but I was still miffed! Got home, determined to pack it up and send it back to Amazon, when I noticed the advice on the box to call support or go online for help before returning the unit. I went online, and lo and behold, there was a notice that a GPS upgrade was needed! This was disconcerting, happening as it did in the middle of a trip, and I didn't see any notice that this might happen, either in the box poster for using the unit or online in the manual(I had my iPad on the trip and stopped at a rest area and looked up the manual; even if I had stumbled on the explanation, I could not have downloaded the update through the iPad). So be advised if this happens to you! Make sure to take the sync cord so that you can use a computer to upgrade.

GPS navigation devices have come a long way. What used to be exclusive gadgets that only a few could afford has become nearly as ubiquitous as the car stereo. In recent years this trend has only accelerated with the introduction of GPS navigation capabilities to the smartphones. Some of these smartphone GPS solutions are really impressive and give the standalone GPS devices run for their money. However, there is something to be said for having a dedicated device that will do one thing and do it well. That's why I have continued to use the standalone GPS devices, and will likely do so for foreseeable future.

Over the years I've owned several different GPS navigators. Garmin continues to be my preferred brand, but I've also tested several Magellan devices. This is the first TomTom device that I've come across, and although I will probably continue using my Garmin Nuvi, in terms of most essential features TomTom gives it a run for its money.

The TomTom Start that I got comes with the lifetime map updates for US and Canada, so I naturally wanted to make sure that my maps are up to date before I start using it. It turns out that I needed to download the Mac desktop app since my unit did not come with one. Getting the app from the TomTom's website was not the smoothest process shall we say. They really need to make the connectivity and user experience more Mac friendly.

I like the large 5" screen. In my opinion that is an optimal size for a small vehicle GPS navigation unit. Anything larger would obstruct too much of the view through the windshield. The screen is fairly well illuminated even in the bright sunlight.

The screen uses the resistive touch technology, instead of the more expensive capacitive technology that is found in most today's tablets and smartphones. This means that the touch sensitivity is very low, and you have to press fairly firmly before the screen detects the contact. The touch response time is also not very good, nor is the precision. All of these things become very annoying when you are starting your trip and want to get going as fast as possible. If you've never used a GPS navigation unit and are familiar with smartphones, you may be very frustrated when you first start using it.

The device comes with a windshield mount, which is overall OK. I prefer mounting my GPS units to the dashboard instead of the windshield, but this mount will be useful in either case.

Unlike most other GPS navigators that I've tested TomTom only includes one standard voice for the turn-by-turn navigation. You can purchase additional voices online, but these are kind of expensive (about $13 per voice), and they don't include the street name annunciations. This is definitely a shortcoming in my book.

When it comes to navigation TomTom Start's performance was definitely comparable to the one that I've experienced from my Garmin Nuvi. There are a few subtle differences (I think that TomTom acquires satellites a bit faster than Garmin), but nothing in my experience thus far that would make either one of the units a clear winner. I liked all the speed limit indicators, traffic updates, and the exact lane navigation that this TomTom navigator offers, but most of those are only really useful if you drive a lot around bigger cities. If you use GPS navigation predominantly for long road trips, then all of these extra features are a nice add-on but not something that is all that crucial.

Overall I have been very pleased with this TomTom Start navigator. It has all the features that I'd expect from an up-to-date stand-alone GPS device, and it will probably be a solid choice for anyone looking to invest into one of these for a longish period of time. There are a few shortcomings that prevent me from giving it a five-star review, but overall it is as good of a GPS device as you'll come across.

I have tested many GPS devices over the past 5 to 6 years. Rarely do I use the same model GPS for more than 6 to 8 months. Over time I have seen a great amount of improvement in technology with these devices, and prices have dropped to where just about everyone should be able to afford a reliable GPS navigator for their vehicle. The TomTom START 55M is only the second TomTom GPS that I have tested. My most frequently tested GPS units, which has also become my brand of choice over the years, have been made by Garmin, although I have tested a few Magellan models as well.

This TomTom START 55M provides a bright, colorful, 5 inch display, which I enjoy far more than the 4.3 inch displays I have had on most of my other test navigation devices. The downside is that this TomTom model does not have a capacitive touch screen, which means that you have to press your finger fairly hard against the screen to register input. While I have had many other model GPS devices with this same resistive type screen, the TomTom 55M seemed to require more pressure, and registered far more false entries than the previous test models by other manufacturers. My recent Garmin GPS, with its capacitive touch screen, is extremely easy to input information, with a response close to that of a modern day touch screen smart phone (iPhone, Android phone, etc.). Although all GPS manufacturers recommend that you do not attempt to input information into the device while driving, let's face it, we all do it. This TomTom device, with the difficult touch entry, would certainly pose a hazard if you fiddle with it while driving. You want to make sure you have your destination programmed before you begin your journey. If you must alter your destination, or input any waypoints, then I definitely recommend you pull over and do it from a safe, stationary location.

Setup was pretty straightforward, with a map update already available for the device when I connected it to my computer. The download is fairly hefty, and the installation process takes quite some time, but it is almost totally automated. You will need to properly register the device with TomTom before you get the free updates. Installation in the car was a breeze. I'm not a big fan of windshield mounts, but the included mount holds the device firmly in place. I just worry that over time it may not hold as well. After testing the TomTom START 55M in my car for two weeks, I found it to be spot on at getting me to my destination with an efficient route. I don't care much for the navigation voice, and was disappointed to find that TomTom charges a hefty fee to download any additional voices into the device. My Garmin devices have always had several voices to choose from, with many others free for download (although there are a few premium voices that they charge for). One bothersome thing for me is the time it takes to acquire satellites. Because my car sits in direct sunlight at my place of employment, I like to remove the GPS from the windshield or dash and place it in the center console of my car when I am not driving. My Garmin devices go into a kind of sleep mode, using very little battery power, and when reconnected reacquire satellites quite quickly. The TomTom 55M, however, seems to completely power down when I remove it. Once popped back into the mount, I have to power it up, and wait for it to boot up and reacquire satellites. This takes some time, and I do not like the wait time it takes before I can begin navigating. The 5-inch screen displays a lot of useful information, and the menus are laid out well for ease of use. But entering an address on that resistive touch screen is quite a chore, sometimes requiring multiple presses to get it to register a proper touch command. It just seems like TomTom could have used a more sensitive screen for this device, to save the user a lot of frustration. Once you get the 55M programmed for navigation, it performs flawlessly; at least it did for me. The display is bright and easy to read, even with sunlight pouring into the car, and voice prompts are loud, clear, and easy to understand. The lane assist feature is handy, but I did find that traffic updates in my area were not always reliable and accurate.

Overall I find the TomTom START 55M to be a solid performer for an entry level GPS device, with some added bells and whistles not normally found on a low cost GPS navigator. However, I am now back to using my Garmin nüvi 3590LMT 5-Inch Portable Bluetooth GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map and Traffic Updates, which is notably more expensive, but far more easy to operate, faster satellite acquisition, and with much more reliable traffic updates. For someone looking to purchase their first GPS navigator, or to upgrade from a much older and/or smaller device, the TomTom START 55M would be a great choice. The purchase cost is extremely affordable, and the free lifetime maps make it a real bargain. I seriously doubt you would find a better device, with as many features, for the money. For someone with far more patience than me, at dealing with the pesky, low sensitivity touch screen interface, this would be a great choice.

No two GPS units are the same. I've tried almost every major brand and I prefer the TomTom models. Before this unit, I was using a GPS by TomTom with a smaller screen for vacation trips and navigational adventures in unfamiliar areas.

I plugged the unit into the TomTom site and updated the software which took quite some time. But, from previous models' snafus that I had read about, I first deleted voices and icons from the unit to free up space in the unit before I began the download of updated materials. This may not be necessary now, but it was at one time. Once updated, I took it out and began my trip.

The general operation of the GPS is very similar to my older model. Some icons are on the opposite side from my older one. With one touch I could switch views of the map on the screen from a view you'd see by looking down on a map to a view of looking down the road ahead of you. This was convenient and useful to me when I was in congested city settings. I could switch to the view looking down on the map and see streets parallel to me and get a better view around me. Overall, this new one is brighter and the touchpad sensitivity is much better. I felt like I had to press the old screen much harder than I should've had to. This new unit did alert me to a redlight camera that I knew was there, but the older unit has never alerted to the camera. My old one did not have the lifetime maps, so had I spent the money to update the maps it too might have alerted to the camera.

Having the free lifetime maps will definitely be nice. I will never have another GPS unit without the free lifetime maps.

Some say GPS units are dying out. If you travel much outside major metropolitan areas where there are no 3G or 4G cellular towers, you will soon find out just relying on your smartphone to get you there will not work. As long as your up-to-date TomTom GPS can see the sky, it will get you there...and no, I don't work for TomTom or any GPS companies.

So, having tried many GPS systems, I can confidently say that this one is the best yet. I love the large screen and the map layout. I would highly recommend this one to anyone looking for a good gps system and free lifetime maps. That alone makes it worth a lot, considering that was never offered in the earlier models.

Initially I will give it 4 stars as this was its first full day of use from mid morning into late evening. All functions worked as advertised, map was accurate out of the box, no updates applied yet and...

... though it is not adverised as being able to provide traffic info when I used the car power cord from my XL350TM, how about that, there was the traffic info. I had decided to go with my older cord because the one supplied was way too short for my needs so having the traffic information appear on the screen was a very nice surprise.

Compared to the recently deceased XL 350TM the Start 55M screen felt more sensitive to the touch, its processor a bit speedier reacting to user unput and moving to a 5" screen is easier on the eyes.

The window mounting bracket supplied was had the friction on the ball mount set way too tight, the tension screws will need to be adjusted before I consider it ready for daily use. I'm using the mount from the 350TM which I had already adjusted to my liking and it handled the slight extra weight of the 55M without any problems.

It found and locked on to 10 satelites within a reasonable amount of time in the St. Paul/Minneapolis, MN area. By that I mean it was ready to go by the time I removed it from its travel pouch, turned the unit on, connected the power cord to the unit and the vehicle's cigarette lighter and secured it to the windshield.

Already being familiar with the Tom Tom interface made it for an easy transition from the XL350TM unit to the Start 55M. I can't speak to other reviewers' comparisons across brands all I can say this is not the worse interface ever and it does the job just fine.

As a basic 5" screen GPS with a hidden unadvertised feature and on sale for 129.99 I would suggest anyone not in the market for bells and whistles to give it seroius consideration.

2nd Generation Audio FM Transmitter plus integrated Car Charger for the Cowon J3 with Gomadic TipEx

2nd Generation Audio FM Transmitter plus integrated Car Charger for the Cowon J3 with Gomadic TipExchange Technology
  • Allows your Cowon J3 to transmit clear; rich audio while simultaneously powering/recharging.
  • 2nd Generation version incorporates a more powerful charging circuit; better FM signal isolation and higher output for clear; rich sound
  • Full FM frequency spectrum selectable (88.1 to 107.9 MHz). Advanced Digital PLL sound coding maintains stable and high quality sound
  • FM Transmitter supports an effective range of over 30 feet. Works in virtually every size and shape vehicle
  • Buy with confidence! Product is backed by Gomadics comprehensive lifetime warranty

This item works, but seems to be under-powered. I live in a large urban area (Houston) where the FM dial is almost completely full and, as a result, this little unit has to fight through a ton of transmissions. Given that it only has to broadcast a few feet, you'd think it'd be powerful enough to send a clear signal but it's not. Most of the time my music is accompanied by static and the volume has to be turned up very high on both my device and the radio for anything to be heard. As a comparison, I can comfortably listen to the radio on volume level 16 with the windows rolled up but, using my pmp, I need to have the volume at 30 on the device itself and around 45 on the radio.

Also, as a minor inconvenience, the display is not positioned for easy reading.

Pros: Can listen to music without being hostage to a radio or a stack of discs (5 stars)

Cons: Not powerful enough. (-1 star)

These are an absolutely perfect fit for my 2012 FJ! They match so well that one would never know they didn't come with the vehicle. The mats that came with it looked kind of crappy, but I still want to keep the pristine, should I ever decide to sell. These mats work WAY better in cold, rainy, muddy, snowy...you get it. They were easy to install/put in place.

I could not be happier with this purchase. This is a very good price and with prime shipping...a big win.
