This is a great scanner, with very good specs, has a nice, small form-factor, and works reliably.

I concur with the positives in the other, previous reviews.

But I've got a couple of gripes, for which I knocked one star off the rating: (these are not deal-breakers, but just things to be aware of)

1. The included rechargeable batteries are just a bit too large in diameter for the battery cover to fit properly (the cover sort of "bulges" out). More of an annoyance at this point, but I'm concerned that it could possibly break eventually, requiring me to find a replacement cover. (Using AA batteries does not cause this problem, the cover fits just fine with them).

2. The arrangement and organization of the owner's manual is very poor in my view. It's not printed, which may surprise some buyers, personally I'd prefer it printed, but I understand the economics of releasing it only online/on included CD. But sorry, the manual is VERY POORLY arranged. I'm an experienced radio guy, just not with Uniden brand products. But I still am getting frustrated trying to find stuff. I would much prefer a PDF style manual, where typefaces, spacing, white space, etc. can be combined to communicate point much more effectively. Is this a big deal? Well probably not a deal-breaker, once you/I figure out how the various features work, we won't need the manual much, but it's a royal pain until then. You may have friends who can help you out on this, which may make this irritation not too big a deal for you.

3. This scanner does have a LOT OF CAPABILITY, including some really cool features, as a result, most keys have multiple functions, some (again, my personal opinion) are not as well thought out as I would prefer, ie not intuitive.

But overall, it's a good unit. My gripes are probably not deal-breakers, and keeping in mind the price, it's a worthwhile purchase. If you're experienced with Uniden products, you might not have any trouble at all figuring out how to use it, perhaps even not needing the manual, but if you're like me, just be prepared for a learning curve longer than you might otherwise expect.

When I was shopping for a new portable scanner, I was looking at the GRE PSR-300 and this Uniden BC346XT. Both are great scanners as far as reviews and features go, but I ultimately settled on the higher priced BC346XT (obviously) because it had some features that I absolutely wanted which the GRE scanner lacked. The only downside(s) so far is that this scanner is up to $70 more in price than the GRE and that Amazon dropped the price by $18 AFTER I got it shipped to me. Hehe... so frustrating! I could have gotten it for a better price locally, but then the sales tax comes in and Amazon was just cheaper overall.

Anyway, back to the scanner.

This thing is amazing. I've had it for going on 3 days now (since 5/28/2010) and after a short learning curve (scanners have sure changed), this thing is just wonderful. Its size is great. I honestly thought it would be bigger than it really is judging from the images I have seen online, but it is REALLY compact. The audio is perfect with perfect tone and loud output even when set to low.

I have not played with every feature of this scanner yet, but I am sure it is all as good as what I have toyed with so far. I have been using FreeSCAN to program it and that program has been good to me so far.

Pros:

Clear audio

Comes with rechargeable batteries (I have gotten 11 hours out of them with the backlight on infinity)

Comes with a really sturdy belt clip. I was shocked it was as nice as it is

It is easy to program through your computer with FreeSCAN (no Mac support for this) or through the keypad

The display is informative. Signal strength and 3 different modes are just 2 of the pros of the screen

Rebanding support and upgradeable firmware (obviously) help a lot.

Cons:

Price More expensive than its direct competitor the GRE PSR-300, but you do get slightly better features

Comes with a SERIAL cable instead of USB. Save your money here, folks, I bought the TENDnet TU-S9 Serial-to-USB** (uses same chipset as Uniden USB-1 uses) and it has worked flawlessy for only $15

Does not come with programming software and it probably should for the price

Doesn't make sandwiches for me

You can't go wrong with this scanner. Those of you having a very hard time programming it are probably just over complicating things for yourselves. It really is not hard at all.

As a new and very novice scanner user, this scanner once programmed works very well. Sound quality is excellent and reception is excellent.

I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this scanner. I still had no idea how involved scanner programming can be or how complex the systems today are. Decades ago the biggest problem was getting the correct crystals installed into the scanner to hear the local fire and police; today's radio systems are much more complex.

If you're a radio / scanner expert you may be able to program this scanner without a PC, I am not and highly recommend third party software ArcXT Basic and at least a temporary membership to radioreference [dot com]. Reason being this makes programming this system a breeze provided you have a serial port on your PC. If not get a USB to serial converter TRENDnet USB to Serial Converter TU-S9 (Blue) (less expensive option) or the Uniden USB cable Uniden USB-1 Scanner Radio PC Interface Cable. This scanner comes with the Serial connector for the PC. I did not even look at the software included on the CDROM, everything I read regarding the included software led me to believe it was much to complex and incomplete. I can say that using ArcXT Basic with the radioreference subscription allowed me to get the scanner up and running in less than 30 minutes for all my local fire and police and several other radio systems of interest in the area that never would have occurred to me to look for.

This scanner comes with rechargeable batteries and an AC adapter which will charge the batteries when the unit is plugged in.

I am very satisfied with the purchase and functionality of this scanner and highly recommend this scanner!

This charger is a very nice charger. Prospective buyers should be aware (I was) that there is no automatic shut-off when battery is fully charged. There is a timer to regulate the length of charging time. I did not realize by the specs & write up that the "tester" was a simple volt meter. I already own 3 or 4 of those on different testers. Even though there is a convenience factor to the meter being mounted in the charger I would not have paid so much more for it had I realized a voltmeter was all that it is. Also I would have liked to see a sturdier set of wheels & tires that would make it roll better in gravel & dirt. I am certain that the high quality of this charger will give me many years of service. The 3 year manufacturers warranty is great. Shipping time was excellent.

Someone said the tester was just a voltmeter, so I got it because a voltmeter is adequate for a quick test at the car. But it is a voltmeter that only goes up to 12.7 volts!!!! And it has no numbers on it. Despite the fact the meter says "charging system" condition on it, it is only capable of measuring battery voltage. The meter is pegged in the green with 12.7 volts. (resting Voltage for a fully charged battery) Which means if you believed the word "good" on the "charging system" meter, you'd think the alternator was charging, but it may not be. It only tells you if the battery is charged or not (with the car off, and no surface charge on it). The manual explains that is it testing the battery, but it is not labeled well on the charger, and in the advertising.

I bought this charger after my hand held smart charger stopped working. I wanted a charger that had ample boost capability. I have used this charger a couple of times now and has worked flawlessly. I'm very pleased with its performance and very happy with the price. Please be aware that this is NOT a smart charger. I have owned several smart chargers (both high quality, $150 and low quality, $79)in the past and they have all either failed or were not accurate. This unit works very simple. This is a great charger. I ordered it and received it three days later with standard shipping charges. Pretty impressive huh!!!

The only bad thing is the plastic, injection molded tires that come with the unit. They are hollow and pretty thin. I can't imagine they would last any length of time if it is moved around frequently. I did not even put them on the unit. I went to Home Depot and bought some hard rubber tires with metal wheels and had to buy some bushings as the axle on the unit is fairly small. It is now a great unit! Schumacher should just spend a little bit more for better tires and charge four or five dollars more.

I agree with the previous poster that the one-star reviews are unfounded. Anyone purchasing this product must know that they will end up soldering wires under their dash. How else would you expect this box to open your doors and blink your lights? Come on...

As for the product, it works exactly as described and as one would think it should. For $50, this is a bargain. It took me about 3 hours to get it all installed and a good deal of that was figuring out which wires did what in my car (a manual will bring this time way down). That said, the installation couldn't be easier once you know which wires you want: just strip off some insulation, solder the appropriate wire from the harness provided to the wire in your car, repeat as needed. Simple, simple.

Electrical circuits in cars are _very_ simple. For the most part, they're all just circuits that switch power no signals to transmit or anything fancy. That said, if you don't know what a relay is or how one works, you should probably learn that before attempting to install this yourself. The product itself works great and the installation manual tells you everything they could be expected to tell you, given that they can't give installation instructions for every car on the road.

Let me be upfront about this: I purchased this product after trying to install a similar system made by Bulldog Security. That system was slightly more expensive, but available at a local parts store.

Before buying this, be sure you know how to connect wires in your car. Also be sure you can figure out (or find a diagram) telling you which wire is which. I would think that is an obvious thing, but the negative reviews seem to be largely based on the fact that these instructions (labeled Professional Install Only) do not explain in painfully clear detail how to do everything.

They include a diagram of the harness that connects to the head unit and very clearly explain what each wire is for which is really all you need in the first place.

That said, for the Do-It-Yourself'er with some basic auto wiring experience, this is not a complicated job. The most difficult thing will be figuring out where you'd like to mount the system, and what type of door lock system your car has. That last part is extremely important, as it won't do you much good to hook this thing up the wrong way.

Now, on to the product. The first thing that struck me about this system is that the wiring harness included is 2 gauges larger than the harness I had before. That's nice, it put me at ease. It also includes fuses for the circuits that need them, which spares you some grief.

The head unit (for lack of a better term) is very solidly built. It doesn't rattle around like some of the others I've installed, and it has a good weight to it.

Feature-wise, this is the best deal on the market. Period. You get two accessory channels, a ground-when-armed (read: starter kill, with one additional relay) output, horn honk, dome light supervision, parking light flash...all with built-in relays (trust me, it matters.

Everything works as advertised, which is more than I can say for the other unit (BS 1702) I tried to install. 5 head units later I took the thing back for a full refund and got this.

The range is about what you'd expect, if you keep the antenna wire fairly straight and secured. I'm going to try to extend the antenna for a better range, as I'm only getting around 25 feet at the moment. Of course, that's about what I'd expect from a unit this inexpensive. If you want a really high range, spend the extra money.

The downside? It does not include the blue status LED. Considering how easy it was to find that part locally, I'm not going to complain.

I'm reasonably handy with auto repair, maintenance, electricity/electronics, etc. It took me about 5-6 hours to completely install this unit to add remote keyless entry to my 1995 Ford Mustang GT. Identifying and locating the wires is a chore. My only regret is not spending a little more $$ and time to add remote start, maybe 3-4 more wires. The remote range is fine, like the flashing blue led.

One star reviews of this product are unfounded. This is clearly a system which requires professional installation not "weekend wanna be's". The included information says that it's for professional installation. Giving it a one star review because someone can't install it has no bearing on the actual product and system.

That being said, I bought this at Best Buy and had the Geek Squad install it. I have a 2010 Toyota Corolla. Hard to believe it didn't have one that came with it. The Geek Squad installed it without any problems -because they are professionals. It allows for one push of the button unlocks the drivers side door and two pushes unlocks all doors. That is a desirable feature since it's much safer. It has a bright blue LED light in the dash which illuminates the car and makes it look like it has an alarm. It has a good range and I'm quite satisfied. I never understand why people want to be 200 feet from their car to unlock it. That's not safe either. The fobs are nice and are the perfect size. This system does everything it says and it does it quite well. If your vehicle doesn't have keyless entry this is the best investment you can make.

The charger does not seem to have been designed for a GPS receiver originally; Gomadic provides a rather shaky GPS receiver tip for it in what looks like a cell phone charger. When the GPS unit is connected to the power outlet, it is impossible to place it on the dashboard or windscreen.

So when my charger broke for my HTC I was desperate to find something quick, I mean.. there was only so long that my old one would charge w/ the wire wrapped around my phone. When I came across this product I was excited, 3 chargers for pretty much $4?!(incl. shipping). Sounded like a steal to me! Figured, even if this product sucked I was only wasting $4 anyway which could have gone to something far less useful. I wanted to rush the order, but the shipping became outrageous(I think around $19) still cheaper than if I bought it at a kiosk at the mall but still expensive compared to asking price. It took regular ground shipping to arrive, came packaged in little plastic bags save for the car charger which was in a thin paper box. The only reason I'm not giving this product 5 stars is due to the USB cable. My original charger was a USB cord that could plug into a separate wall jack, tossed out my broken USB and plugged the new one in -it barely lasted a week! The plastic around the metal that fits into your phone snapped off in two pieces leaving the wires exposed. Was able to use it for a day before the wires tore :(

I put this into my BMW R1200R when the original battery started to develop a weakness. It works beautifully and strong. Never a problem in the past year in temperatures between 20F-100F. So I was kind of hesitant to buy this because there were no reviews on it but I decided to go with it anyway. I'm so glad I did. It's not cheaply made like the other ones that I've seen, and it gives a nice blue glow when it's plugged in, letting you know that there's power going to it. The fact that there's a USB is even better because it lets you charge your ipod/iphone or anything else that requires a USB to charge. Also, you're able to tilt it up so that it's not in the way if you need it to be. Overall, I'm pretty happy with this product.

I drove cross-country to relocate, and I needed to use a GPS, phone charger, and radar detector simultaneously, so I chose this 3-port adapter to replace my dual adapter from Radio Shack.

I viewed all the 3-port chargers I could find on Amazon, and I bought this one because it seemed to be higher quality than many others, and the price is very reasonable.

The adapter initially plugged into my car's power port fine, but it tended to loosen occasionally, and I'd have to push it back in so the tip made contact.

It functioned perfectly for the first few days, but gradually, all three 12VDC power ports broke (I haven't used the USB port). The ports are not very durable; the front plastic panel that holds the internal metal collars breaks, so the collars shift inside each port and lose electrical contact. The collars are not supported well at all, and repeated plugging and unplugging of devices caused them to fail. The extra tight fit to the power plugs only made it worse.

If you plug your cords in once and never remove them, I suppose this product would last a lot longer than two weeks.

I went back to the Radio Shack adapter, which has worked for two years and counting.

I have had for about 5 months now and I have really only used it less than 10 times.

It was a bit tight to fit into the cigarette lighter and I had to wiggle it a few times as it seemed to have lost connection.

I contributed that to maybe that it was still new.

I have not used it enough but since it responded after I wiggled it, I was satisfied and carried on with life.

I will post an update in about 6 months or a 1 year or if anything stops working.

For about $8 ($13 delivered) this little gizmo has already paid for itself in convenience on just one 8 day road trip. I live in So Cal so I received the item from the distributors San Diego, CA location in half the expected delivery time. That was appreciated because the expected delivery date was one day prior to my trip departure leaving little room for error (but it would have been my fault anyway because I waited until the last week to make such a purchase). YMMV on delivery times.

The product itself came well packaged (actually overpackaged for such a small item but appreciated none the less). Again, remember we're talking about an $8 piece of equipment so always keep that in mind when thinking about purchasing this item. It is so affordable that it is almost a one time/throw away worthy type piece BUT the construction appears sufficiently capable of holding up to some decent long term usage. I however will only need to use it on long road trips as I do not routinely need more than one 12v plug for an occasional cell phone recharge (plus my SUV has a 2nd 12v plug under the arm rest for the rare 2nd 12v plug-in need). So this item should last some time for our needs.

Soon after receipt, I ripped open the plastic cocoon holding it in place, plugged in my wifes iPhone 3G charger via the single USB port, a Beltronics Vector 955 radar detector into the 12v slot #1, a Tom Tom GPS into the 12v slot #2 and for good measure, a univeral camera battery charger into the 12v slot #3, plugged the fully loaded unit horizontally into my SUV 12v opening below the radio, fired up my rig and bam, NOTHING.

I must advise that the unit DID NOT provide power in my SUV when all 4 slots were used at once while in the horizontal position.

(just throwing darts in the dark here -->)Perhaps the weight of all the plugs in the horizontal position made the connection to my SUV 12v slot unbalanced and therefore did not provide enough contact to the vehicle 12v slot.

Because the unit has a swivel base, all I did to quickly remedy the situation was turn off the vehicle power, rotated the item vertically, reset all the plugged in items and then fired up my rig again. This time the blue indicator light on the unit lit right up (a nice visual touch for power on confirmation) and then all the other plugged in items buzzed into action. I actually like the fact that it functions better for my particular application while standing up vertically because it keeps my front passenger from any possible interference with the unit. Win-win for my needs.

It passed the test mode like a champ and like I previously indicated, this item worked flawlessly through a 1500+ mile, 8 day, multiple stop and stay roadie.

This item has received a positive, referrable review from me for living up to my real world useage.

I will follow up soon as to whether or not the USB port functions with the new 4G iPhone (my wife receives her new phone when she returns to work next week from this current vacation period).

UPDATE: 3/22/11

This unit is still working like a champ after several long road trips and I can confirm that the USB port does power an iPhone4.

I bought this because it was the cheapest thing that fit my needs.

Pros-

Has a USB port. Excellent for charging your phone without buying an adapter

The portion that inserts into the lighter is on the small side, in a good way. It isn't too bulky or tough to get out, but stays in place when it must

Cons-

Cannot easily fill all ports at once, the 1st and 3rd adapter ports + usb makes for a crowded space. I can't imagine putting something else in the middle port.

Flimsy. When I plug anything into the lighter-shaped ports, the entire unit succumbs to gravity and faces the floor. It generally stays plugged in, which I guess makes it okay, but it's a pain.

Weak connection points. Although the connection to the car is fine, the ports for your aux devices are weak, and become loosened easily.

If you just want *something, anything* for this purpose, go ahead. If you want quality, keep looking.

It's a hard shell that will protect the GPS unit. It has a separate compartment for storage of sd cards. Best of all it has two straps that holds the GPS in its place that alone is sweet. I purchased this once before for my 4.3" 3790 unit and a new one for my 5" 3490. This company makes a great product. Thank you.

I was skeptical that we would be able to program this to function in my daughter's 2001 Subaru Forester, but it worked just fine. My daughter is delighted. Quick shipping; good condition. Would definitely recommend.

First of all this remote does not work on the 2001 Impreza as stated in the title. In the included instructions it states that it works with all Alpine equiped Subarus which are the Legacy 2001-04, Forester 2001-04, and Impreza 2002-04. The 2001 Impreza uses a differant system.

Second and mostly what I gave this rating on is the condition in relation to the price, the one I got from "KEYLESS4U" (AVOID AVOID AVOID THIS SELLER!!!), was described as USED-Very Good. It is actually VERY WORNbut in WORKING CONDITION, the lettering was worn off on one of the buttons, I dont see how this can be USED-VERY GOOD.

And finally the SELLER, I dont anyone to think I am rating this product bad because of the seller KEYLESS4U (Goes by BRADY), but while you are here I might as well warn you to AVOID this guy. I have been on Amazon for a long time and have bought lots of products and have had to replace or return a couple of them. I have never had such a frustrating experience as I have with KEYLESS4U and Brady (the guy selling these junk yard key FOBs). I contacted him through email about being sent the wrong remote and asked for a shipping lable and a refund. His response was "take pictures of your remote, send your VIN# and blah blah blah so I can do some research". Really? Do "research on your own time, not the customers! In short I responded with a no just fullfill my request through email, and the next thing Im getting phone calls from this guy Brady (which made me uncomfortable, I dont like online sellers calling me unless I call them first). Nonetheless I explaind about the remote and he stated when he "got back to the office" the next he would research it and send me a shipping label. Today (the next day after the phone conversation) I get a txt message that he post snail mailed me a prepaid envelope, and when I get it in the mail I mail it back to him, and then he will give me a refund. All this trouble for a crappy 20 something $$ remote that doesnt even work with my car.

So if you have one of the cars I listed above, get the remote but not from KEYLESS4U.

You're probably better off with just a car adapter to power the phone and a technique to attach the phone to the dash so that it doesn't roll around on something like a car seat. The v710 provides best speakerphone quality to both ends if used alone.

I also tried to control the speaker volume from the phone (there's nothing on the speaker unit to do that), and wasn't satisfied.

Forget Bluetooth. Forget iPhones. When I had my Motorola V60 (and others) I had the best sound and the best transmission ever. People have been complaining they can't understand me on my iPhone and won't take it anymore!

My first iPhone--a 3GS--was so inaudible that I removed my SIM card and reverted to my old V60 in the middle of a trip. And yet, I have had 3 iPhones since. All have nifty mini-computer gadgety stuff -but the telephony sucks. Even with my Bluetooth!

So, POd, I just removed my SIM card again (4 years later) and pulled out my V60 from 2003-6. I'm getting the retractable again, because it is unbeatable! I'll keep my iPhone and use it as a Touch -just do my email etc on it.

But this is unbeatable. I can't understand why they haven't made models for newer phones with that different connection. I'd love that!

I've been using this car kit for about 3 years and couldn't be happier wih the sound quality. The only problem I have with it is that the 12V plug is too tight for the accessory outlet in my Lexus RX330, but it has fit fine in several other cars that I've owned, including Nissan and Chrysler. If you intend on using it in a Lexus, get an adapter for $12.99. It will save you trips to the dealer to have the accessory outlet put back in. I've had the same problem with the 12V plug on my GPS unit.

I don't understand why the other person rated it so poorly, but mine is loud and clear with my V300.
