Allstart Tools 556 Marine Battery Jump Starter with AC Inverter

Allstart Tools 556 Marine Battery Jump Starter with AC Inverter5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Jumper Box with 22 amp battery, 1700 watt peak power, and 300 watt inverter, November 26, 2012

By Big Sur Steve This review is from: Allstart Tools 5569 Marine Battery Jump Starter with AC Inverter and 2 Pack Microfiber Cloth (Automotive)

I needed a rugged jumper box, that had a high ampere battery, was easily portable, and had an inverter to operate a variety of small AC electrical appliances. Tthis jumper box fits the bill.

The box is a little shorter and a little thicker than the Clore box I've been using for the past 3 years, which is excellent at getting cars jump started: Clore Automotive JNC660 Jump-N-Carry 1,700 Peak Amp 12-Volt Jump Starter If Clore made a jumper box with built in 300 watt inverter, I would have picked it up. They are ruggedly built, with a thick plastic housing, have strong clamps and thick lead cables capable giving a 1700 peak amp jump with 425 cranking amps. This is plenty of power to jump a large displacement V-8 automobile engines in addition to a number of Diesel engines. The box is also small enough to make it easily manueverable and can fit into tight areas where space is limited.

After looking at a variety of jumper boxes, this one came closest to meeting the specs I was looking for. The box is a little heavier than the Clore, but it also has a 22 amp battery which is a little bigger than the Clore plus a 300 watt inverter, which the Clore does not have. By no means is the Marine battery a heavy jump box, just a little heavier than the Clore.

I like the clamps on the Marine jump box. The tops of the clamps look better insulated than the iClore clamps and have strong clamping springs to prevent slippage of clamps off the terminals. The leads use a thick gauge wire, but not as thick as the Clore. The jump box provided plenty of juice to turn over a high compression V-8, and is rated at 40 jumps between recharging. Also the Marine box has a light. The light provides adequate light and rotates. The Clore box doesn't have a light.

On the back of the Marine box is a two plug, 300 watt inverter which is turned on with a switch. I used the inverter to charge an iPad 3 from 5 percent to full at about the same rate as a wall plug. The meter on the Marine battery is a bit more difficult to read than the Clore box. It is a vertical meter with 3 colors: green for full power, yellow for marginal, and red for needs charging. The needle had moved down on the green zone and almost into the yellow after charging the iPad 3. I prefer the left to right needle gauge on the Clore box which reads DC volts to show state of battery charge. As far as overcharging is concerned, the Marine battery has the edge over the Clore with an overcharge prevention feature, whereas the Clore box does not.

One other inverter test I ran was on a large Netgear Router NETGEAR Wireless Router N900 Dual Band Gigabit (WNDR4500) On a fully charged box, I kept the router running for 24 hours before needing a recharge. In case we have a power outage with the cell phone towers also down, I wanted to know how much router time I had for Internet access. During Hurricane Sandy, many of the cell towers were down preventing access to the web through 4G.

Here are my likes:

-sturdy build

-22 amp battery

-300 watt inverter

-stout, insulated battery clamps

-work light

-automatic charging shutoff when box is fully charged

Needs improvement:

-meter needs to show percentage of charge remaining

-external fuse on inverter could get caught and break. Needs a better location.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this box. It has a stout build quality similar to the Clore, costs about the same and also has a 300 watt inverter. The Marine appears to be a quality box on par with the Clore. Only time will tell if it hold up as well as the Clore with extended use, but I suspect it will.

To charge the jumper box by solar, I use a Goal Zero 15 watt panel which I have plugged into the round 12 volt port. This works pretty well taking about 18 hours of direct sunlight to fully charge the battery.

i used it a few times and have no complaints, it is small enough but powerful enough to get you out of a bind

I got this based off a suggestion from my Yamaha dealer and so far it looks to be rock solid. I recently upgraded to 3 group 29 deep cycle batteries as I run a large audio system and needed to make sure I had a way to start them if I ever ran into a dead battery. I took the boat out recently and the batteries were rock solid so I didnt nee to use the jumper, but my cousin and another boater did end up using it and it jumped their boats with ease.

Rayovac KECR1620-1 Battery for Keyless Entry Remotes - Replaces CR1620
  • Replacement batteries for keyless entry remotes

I ordered a simple battery. I was amazed at how immediately involved this company was with the order process, within minutes making sure that all was taken care of for me in an efficient manner. I would use them again if I wanted to procure a specific miniature battery, e.g. for a remote or a watch.

Duracell DRPP300 Powerpack 300 Jump Starter and Emergency Power Source

Duracell DRPP300 Powerpack 300 Jump Starter and Emergency Power SourceThe following review is similar to another review I posted regarding the Duracell Powerpack 450. I have edited some portions that are relevant to this 300 model.

I have had similar powerpacks in the past that were made by Xantrex before Duracell bought them out. I have a Xantrex 400 unit purchased in 2006 that is at 50-65% capacity, but that was my fault as I kept it in a climate controlled environment but did not perform the 3 month charging intervals, hence battery degradation.

I bought this one to replace an old Xantrex 300 unit that I found died on me as I was preparing for hurricane Sandy. I primarily buy these for back up power for light and powering electronic devices like cell/smartphones. I have used it to jump start a car (mostly 4 cylinders) and the air compressor comes in handy to top off the PSI on car tires, and at one time to inflate a half flat tire with a slow leak. I was able to inflate it enough to get it to a tire repair shop safely. Expect long run times when using CFL light bulbs, shorter run times with incandescent. Having done my own bench tests for run times on CFL and incandescent light bulbs, here are the results: 60 watt CFL bulb ran for almost 8 hours. 100 watt CFL bulb ran for almost 5 hours. 40 watt incandescent bulb ran for 2 hours, 15 minutes. As you can see, it runs more efficiently with the use of CFL bulbs over incandescent. If you experience frequent power outages for long periods of times, you may want to invest in some CFL bulbs to switch in your lamps for longer run times. The Powerpack 450 will give you an hour or more of longer run times, but to be honest, the weight and size of that unit doesn't make it worth it for the few extra dollars.

This model is much lighter and more portable than it's Powerpack 450 brother which is much heavier. The overall width, however, is wider than one would expect on the 300. The pictures provided are somewhat deceiving.

Regular maintenance is KEY, I stress KEY to longevity. These are not really workhorses. In my opinion they are for light duty occasional usage. If you follow the recharging intervals as indicated, you will get years of use out of them.

Now, if you are to visit the Duracell website, they list too many restrictions as far as performance for jumping a car battery. The units are sensitive to extreme heat or cold temperatures which affect its performance. After reading this, I would not keep mine in the trunk of my car full time UNLESS I am going on a road trip and want the added security of having it with me "just in case." If you are looking for a dedicated battery jump starter to keep full time in your trunk, I'd look elsewhere for one that is able to withstand extreme heat or cold while not affecting performance. This one simply will not cut it for you. I recommend the Jump-N-Carry JNC300XL 900 Peak Amp Ultraportable 12-Volt Jump Starter with Light but there are others out there for you to choose from.

I'm very pleased with my unit!

...but the timespan in which it remains operational is far too short.

I have had mine for less than a year before it developed problems in charging the battery.

I now discover that there is no support for replacing the battery in the unit; Duracell makes it far too difficult to remove and replace the battery to make it worth the hassle.

The one component in here that is likeliest to break is the battery, and rather than making it easy to service as an end user, they tell people to throw the entire unit out and buy another one.

Wasteful and ridiculous.

I've owned ten of these devices, starting back when they were marketed and sold using the Xantrex brand name. It works fine, but because it contains a lead acid battery, you must charge it once a month. After 2-3 years, however, the battery will die. The manufacturer offers no instructions on how to replace the battery, and so you either need to figure out how to replace it on your own (not easy) or dispose of this and buy a new one.

I've now decided that it is simply better to buy separate components.

The Jump-N-Carry JNC300XL 900 Peak Amp Ultraportable 12-Volt Jump Starter with Light is a jump starter that also contains a lead acid battery. But, unlike with Duracell, this product's battery is user replaceable.

The Slime 40022 12-Volt Digital Tire Inflator will connect to your car's cigarette lighter (or the Jump-N-Carry cigarette lighter output) and inflate your tires. You can even set your desired pressure and it will stop when it reaches that pressure.

And there are a plethora of inverters available that will plug into either to give you 120 Volts.

The nice thing about buying separate components is that they are each lighter and less bulky than this product as well.

Don't get me wrongit is nice to have everything in a single package. And if Duracell allowed the user to replace batteries, I would have given this a very high rating. But, making a product like this disposable is unnecessary and wasteful.

I have used this powerpack numerous times since purchasing. It has been a life saver when I need to air my tractor tires or jump start one of the pieces of equipment that have been sitting for a while.

Exide RF-31D ROADFORCE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance-Free (AGM) Heavy-Duty/Commercial Battery

Exide RF-31D ROADFORCE AGM-200 Sealed Maintenance-Free Heavy-Duty/Commercial BatteryI had ordered and identical battery through Home Depot for $200 and then found this one for $179 on Amazon. The one from Home Depot worked out great and this one has as well so far. I may order more as I am using them for my solar project which requires deep cycle batteries and AGM type batteries are the latest thing.

I live in my RV full time, so a deep cycle battery is extremely important to me. A few years back I bought expensive West Marine Deep Cycle Batteries. The first one worked great, but when it came time to replace it, the new one cost fifty dollars more. Since I have never minded paying for real quality, I bit the bullet and ponied up the extra cash. Unfortunately, the newer more expensive version was made significantly cheaper than the original--even the battery post terminals were thinner. It never worked well, and died after about a year. I was so disappointed with it that I decided to special order an Optima deep cycle battery-until I checked the reviews on Amazon, which said that the new Optimas (now made by Interstate Battery) had suddenly declined significantly in quality, also. Since this Exide Roadforce battery had great reviews, I decided to give it a try, instead. I was a little concerned about not being able to return it to Amazon because of the hazardous materials issue, so I checked with my local Exide rep to see about returns. (I actually told her that I had a defective one that I had purchased on Amazon to return, just to see how they would handle it. Only when she was trying to work out the details of getting me a replacement, did I "come clean" and admit that I was "just testing." She was incredibly helpful and even gracious when she found out the truth of the situation. I am completely convinced that Exide will honor its battery warranty from products purchased on Amazon, but fortunately, this battery has worked so well that I haven't had to find out. I have been using it steadily now for about three or four months, and from my extensive experience with RV batteries, I am quite sure it will out-perform and out-last any other battery that I have ever used.

The cost on Amazon was about a hundred dollars less than any local dealers, and at least a hundred and fifty dollars less than the West Marine piece of s***I bought last time. This is why I purchase so much more on Amazon than at local stores anymore. I want to support my local economy, but have lost so much money from the lack of quality control, that if not for the Amazon reviews, I would probably be bankrupt by now.

The product was expedited in a timely manner, which is one of Amazons customer service qualities. But each shipment lacked the terminal nuts to complete the installation. I made two trips to the auto parts store after determining I need 17mm coarse thread instead of fine thread. Otherwise the performance is satisfactory.

When I bought my solar generator for backup, I was a bit disturbed at the local prices for this recommended battery. I ordered two of these on Amazon and was surprised it had free shipping. have been using them for over a year and they have worked fine.
