I gives you the CEL code, and you can look it up online or a manual for the problem. You can buy a more exspensive one of these which will tell you on the spot about the codes description. I was about to have my car towed to find out why it wouldn't start after I replaced my crankshaft sensor, but bought this instead of paying $90 for tow and $100 for them to hook up a similar device to my car. So many of the 'codes' are either minor or 'transient' (they went wrong once, but they've self corrected) that the mechanics are getting lots of money for doing nothing but reading what their code readers will tell YOU.
